Had my 2012 550 since new. BMW recommended oil changes every 15,000 miles or 21,000 kms. No surprise they caused every N63 engine to fail. I thought they were nuts so just changed my oil every 5000 miles. Engine is fine after 12 years.

Honestly thanks for the pointers, I’m not sure why I wait for the recommended time to change my oil even tho I can feel my car crying for more after a few months.. 2012 750li and it’s been running great since I’ve has it, got it around 140,000 miles I’m at 163 in about 2 years so so it’s held up pretty well for the long distance travels I go on. Definitely not as fast since when I got it tho the bags are really old the electronic damping doesn’t work and there’s a drivetrain malfunction that doesn’t allow me to go into comfort sport or sport plus, other than that engine is fine

I know it is easy to blame it on infrequent oil change intervals, but let's be honest here... most of the failures talked about here WILL HAPPEN even if you change your oil changed every 500 miles. (1) Piezo Injector and high pressure fuel pump -- not even in the oil circuit. (2) Shit over heating in the V and things going bad... well, dirtyoil or clean oil, they'll go bad. (3) Timing Chain skipping due to a bad follower... well, maybe, but it is also possible that the follower just breaks. (4) Oil consumption -- the engine has a low low indicator, so you should be good as long as you top off.

Absolutely but typically just go with the n63 TU technical update and avoid BMW’s with the original N63 if buying use. Even with shorting the oil change intervals they have other costly fixes like the injectors, timing, valve guide seals and etc that need to be done to The best motor BMW made and my favorite to work on was the straight inline 6 bmw m54 engine. Use to be a BMW master technician.

supposedly after 2014 and up they did some reliability mods to the N63. I had a 2012 550i xdrive and the engine started having a lot of oil issues at around 70k miles. The valve stem seals go bad and oil seeps through and into the combustion chamber. BMW fixed this for free but by then I was ready to sell it after I replaced the boost solenoids that went bad and coolant lines.

1st gen n63 here. Actually I’m having valve stem seal and timing chain fixed right now. For me it’s a very powerful engine although it has its downside. Issue began at 110k miles so it hasn’t been that bad at all. Also some hoses here and there (considering this engine has so much of them and T connectors are plastic). It’s a popular engine so my advice is to make your research prior getting a N63 ride. Great vid man. Big shoutout

I’m at 82k miles on 2008 135i N54. Stage 1+ Cobb tune+intercooler since 40k mikes. Aside from plugs and fluids, the car was flawless since purchase. This year, at 80k, is the first time I’m spending money on it. I had water pump/thermostat/leaking oil filter housing replaced/oil change/alignment done at indy BMW garage for 2100$. Right now it’s in shop for all coils/plugs/walnut blast and that’s 1500. Got cylinder 4 misfire and service engine light last week. Aside from the leaky oil filter housing, these are basically expected costs at 80k miles. Water pump, plugs, coils, these are wear and tear. It is what it is. This is my 5th BMW, and none of them have given me crazy unexpected problems except stupid SMG on an E46 M3. I should have known better. There definitely is a price difference to account for. I would be paying 25% less or so if I was driving a Corvette. Is it worth it? That’s up to you. For me, the enjoyment I get out of daily use of a BMW it is worth it. I love these cars. Just know what you are getting into. In my experience, nothing breaks that isn’t supposed to. Reliability is fine. But the maintenance costs more than a domestic, and if you skip it the car will leave you stranded. They are performance cars pushing the edge of pump gas with many advanced technologies in the engine. You cannot abuse it like a Toyota Corolla. It’s a BMW and has to be maintained like a BMW.

Hello Zack. I’ve got a 2013 Alpina B7 with a N63T update. The engine was produced in December of 2012 but the car is a 2013 model with the latest face lift and headlights led upgrades. I have not had any problems, I’ve had it since 2018 and it was at 60,000klm. Now I’m sitting at 80,000 klm. There was a recall where bmw replaced some fuel injectors but that was it. My question is, is this engine built more stronger and more reliable then the 750”s. Ive learned that Alpina changed the pistons and had bigger intercoolers. Is there anything you could tell me about the difference between Alpina B7 and a regular 750 and what the reliability rate is. Thanks!!
@8020Media
@8020Media 2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure of all the exact specs and components that Alpina changed, but I believe the pistons, intercooler, turbochargers, and cylinder heads are all different. Ultimately, it's built to handle the added stresses, pressures, and heat from the more powerful design. However, a majority of the "standard" BMW and N63 issues - like the cooling system and oil leaks - are likely just as common on the Alpina B7.

@8020Media
@8020Media 8 ай бұрын
I've seen some LS swaps on the older E38 7-series but nothing for your F01. My guess is there aren't any pre existing kits out there for it which will probably make it quite expensive and ultimately more expensive than it would be worth. At that point I would rather try to swap an S63 into it but really depends on your budget, power levels you're looking for an so forth. A 750 is so heavy it's not really an ideal candidate for a crazy build and also doesn't quite have the same aftermarket support.

my 650i had about 70.000 km (43.500 miles), when the standard timing chain guide issue appeared which also caused the injectors to be affected. The quoted me with € 15.000 for repair on the engine, but stated very clear: they couldn't guarantee it would be all okay after the repair. I could also get a new engine for € 17.000, but they stated that a new engine would still be prone to the same issue after time. I love V8's, but I won't touch one from BMW with a 10 foot pole after this experience.

Very curious what is included in the 15,000 of repairs. That seems pretty aggressive as does the cost for a new engine....suppose if the quote was from the dealership then I would believe it. But you can buy a built N63 with upgraded bearings, forged internals, etc. for probably like 10-12,000 Euros.

@@8020Media it was a quote from my local BMW dealer. The repair was including the timing chain guides, the injectors and maybe a few other things they wanted to upgrade while the engine was out and open. It was including labour and tax. So when did "iteration" become a synonym for version?
@8020Media
@8020Media 11 ай бұрын
"Version" typically refers to a specific release or variant of a product, software, or creative work. It indicates a distinct stage or edition that incorporates changes, updates, or improvements over previous versions. For example, you might have Version 1.0, Version 2.0, and so on. On the other hand, "iteration" refers to the repetition or successive refinement of a process, design, or idea. It involves making incremental changes or adjustments to improve upon previous versions. Iteration often involves feedback, evaluation, and small modifications aimed at achieving a desired outcome. It is commonly used in software development and other creative fields. I dunno Tom, I'll have to ask my high school english teacher. What I do know is who tf cares.

1qt of oil every 1k miles is garbage. That oil has to go somewhere. The valve seals going bad is another engine out $4k job and coils going bad is another issue. The big issue that is disastrous if you're keeping the car long term is the plastic coolant lines that disintegrate after hot/cool cycles and will lead to engine failure. BMW charges hundreds of dollars for parts that are injection molded for a few bucks and instead of using rubber hoses the plastic lines and connectors is something that is made to fail on purpose with BMW not caring about the car owner. This is why most of the cars they have in the US are leased and why they lose their value and cost less than a used Accord/Camry after 3-4 years.

There was some overlap between N62 and N63 production. The BMW N62 was largely phased out after 2010 with the N63 becoming the primary engine in 2011. However, the N63 was released in models like the X6 and 750i a couple years prior to that.

The n63 does not even have a dip stick to even check the oil .. 🤬 u have to rely on sensors & the front display on dash to check the engine oil level
@8020Media
@8020Media 10 ай бұрын
A dipstick would be a nice back-up option. However, the N63 isn't alone in the lack of a dipstick as this is common practice on just about every modern BMW engine. The N54, N55, N20, B48, B58, etc. do not have a dipstick either. Fortunately, the computer and sensors are very accurate and rarely run into any problems.

Placing twin turbos on top of the engine is dumb! BMW of North America was sued and screwed people over especially if you went over 120k mikes you didn’t qualify!
@8020Media

The N63 was certainly not known for its reliability - V8 twin turbo means expensive problems when something does go wrong. The engines were problematic don't get me wrong, but offering warranty over 120k miles is tough for turbochargers, especially on an engine like the N63 that produces the power levels it does.

Maintained religiously with oil changes, etc. I’ve owned many different cars Lexus, Porsche, Honda, and Nissan and all super reliable.
