I work for BMW. It’s the valve stem SEALS. Which they are covered by the way. Been doing them free of cost to the customer since February. Take your car to the dealer with a simple concern of “hey my car starts smoking after about 10 minutes”. Then the technician will just perform diagnosis under the SIB as per BMW. Yes, it will take at least a week, if not more to perform the work due to possibly having other N63 vehicles in the dealer.

Even if your DIY skills near that of a professional mechanic these engines will take all your time. So many jobs are 11 hour jobs even with a lift. My 2010 BMW 750i xDrive with N63 has treated me great over past 3 years or so. Bought used with NO warranty, had 36k miles on it. Now has 53k miles. I change my own oil every 9 months since it’s not my daily driver and I drive it about 6k miles a year. I have had a few minor issues. Driver door lock would stick and not open when weather got cold. A few days of research led me to the remedy of spraying lubricant on locking mechanism. Never had issue again. Also I do have to add a quart of oil every 2-3k miles. That’s about it. Other routine maintenance has cost me around 900 over past 3 years. I understand that many people don’t have success but a few bad apples shouldn’t spoil the bunch. Do your research and grab the car fax and call the service shops that have done service. As with ANY used car you buy, buy with the fewest owners possible, lowest miles possible, and best service records possible. Expensive full sized luxury cars are not made to be a daily drivers. That might be the problem with most of the bad reviews.

Huge problem with the n63b4400 design. The exhaust manifolds are located to the center line of the engine looking one at the other, having each one a turbo on top. Come on! The amount of heat both manifolds and turbos put together is epic!, it violate any logical solution on trying to disperse heat instead of concentrating it. The hood works as a parabollic heater irradiating very hard all the way down causing abnormal oil comsumption, premature gaskets, belts and seals failure. Plastic reservoirs and other elements crack and melt. The fan continues working for very long after turning off the engine causing frequent drained batteries. But the problems dont stop there. We all know DI engines are prone to admission valves carbon cloaks. In some engines like the mazda skyactiv g 2.5 its very common tomhave and admission port cleanup every 30,000 miles, a work that is more or less simple because the admission manifold es very accesible. On the n63 this problem goes into new levels. Due to the the very high temperatures on this engine oil evaporates quicker and recycles by the pvc more frequently, this added to the exhaust gases inside the turbo escaping and going into the admission chamber because of seals failure (again, due to the inherently high temperatures in this engine) produce massive admission valves cloaks at very low millage as 10,000. Cleaning them is another story, you have two blocks to work on, have to remove the air to liquid intercooler and work in a very uncomfortable position, a us 1600 bill you will see quite often. Why do they put the exhaust manifolds that way?, in order to reduce the intercooler piping complexity and get higher turbo pressures almost at the gate of th exhaust manifold. This design could work well in an f1 car where the engine is almost outside venting well or inside a mid engine vehicle where you can locate huge vent scoops and disperse the heat to the back but is a complete mess in a front location. The only partial solution i can see is to opnen a hole on top of the hood, locate huge side vents on front fenders and a couple of oil catch cans. I have driven a 5 series with this engine for a couple of hours pushing it hard only for a while. Ok, magnificent ride, very serious power, excellent shifting, excellent brakes but steering doesnt give enough control feeling and the temperature, uffff, you can fry an egg and bacon on that hood. This cars sold new for +_ us 90,000 in my country, you can find very few miles ones ( less than 30,000) for around 40,000 us$ which could be consider as a bargain but most frequent bmw buyers are very aware of this engine problems and avoid it paying quite the same for any model with a six in line turbo.

I bought an 08 BMW 550i v8 360hp. I love my BMW V8. It was not serviced properly and had a major leak from the valley pan gasket and reservoir which the “mechanic” who sold me the car lied about. He said there was no leaks. I did all the labor myself but I demanded a refund for 200$ parts and got the car for 6200$ with 140k miles and transmission used with 50k put in. After all that work I did and a fresh coolant with blue bmw coolant and an oil change with filter the bmw is running absolutely great. I disagree with the title but the average Joe who has not tools or can’t work on there car I agree NEVER BUY A V8 BMW if you can’t turn a wrench and preform any service yourself

If you’re going to buy a used 750i then get one as I did...34,000km (21,000 miles) from a single owner (a Chairman of a reputable company) who literally drove freeway miles and kept it in excellent condition. Ask the seller who owned it previously...you can usually get the name off the BMW Privileges card that came with the car (that itself is valid for 7 years!) Google the owner, or call them to find out the cars history. Also, try to get the N63B44O1 (2012 - 2015), the updated version. That benefited from the addition of Valvetronic and several other revisions, with a modest power lift to 445 HP and 650 NM of torque. It was known as the F01 LCI. That ironed out all the issues faced by the first generation N63B44O0 power plant. A gem of a motor and I’ve had no issues. Not even a hint. You just bought a dud, spent your hard earned cash fixing it, and then on-sold it. Why not keep it and enjoy the car once you’ve made it mechanically sound? The next purchaser would have been happy!

I've read a lot of the comments and replies and a lot of you, I have no idea where you get these numbers from of labor times and cost of tools and how long it takes the longest part of the whole class action suit is the testing as per the sib and waiting for BMW to respond with approval. The job its self takes on average three days and a day of QC . If you want to know if its guides, let it idle 20 min and then smash the throttle, if you see smoke from the exhaust, you have a very strong chance of guides being replaced at no charge. Key words to the advisor are " it smokes out the exhaust when I take off from a stop" and " its using a lot of oil " advisors will trip over themselves to get to you.trust me, I'm one of them.

Cost wise in AUS $2,000 for its 11 months including tyres ($500 each for two rears), battery ($700) , (270 for a fault code check), now service of 600-700 for oil, oil filter, air filter and cabin filter and labour! @@nickduplooy8845 it had a leaking coolant line that goes out on every 7 series, It was literally a plastic fitting that turned into gelatin. Bought a brass T fitting from lowes and fixed it for about 3 dollars and an hour and a half of time. The most expensive thing on the car was replacing leaking turbo cooling lines. Thankfully I had a warranty and it covered it. It was like $1200. And I had the "lifetime transmission fluid" changed for around $600 not too long ago. That's really all the issues I've had with the car. On the n63's they had a customer care package where they fixed basically all the weak points of the drivetrain. Frankly, most of my expenses with the car have been wheels and tires. But that's a case by case basis. Also with the customer care package, if you aren't the first owner if you didn't buy your care from a BMW dealership. BMW will not let you know that the customer care package may be available, that's because they don't know that you own the vehicle. Seriously.

Thank you for knowing exactly what you’re talking about. Everything was exact.. I’m currently replacing basically everything in the top end of an N62 v8 right now. So far this is the list of parts that are being replaced. Valve guide seals, valve cover gasket and associated seals. Spark plug domes, timing chain cover gaskets, vanos orings, vacuum pump seals, spark plugs, a single coil pack, coolant transfer pipe and associates seals, valley pan gasket, a Y shaped plastic piece and coolant hose on the top side beneath the intake manifold, intake manifold gaskets, bank 2 knock sensors. I had to buy a few specialty tools. Coolant pressure kit. Cylinder leak down kit, valve spring compression kit, timing alignment kit. Oh it’s scary. I have to take out the camshafts and then readjust the timing. And I think that’s it. I decided to knock out all the cars known issues in one go. This is a 2006 550i so anybody thinking of getting one.. don’t. Be prepared to spend money and know how to work on it. If the above mentioned work was being done in any shop it would be way upwards of 10 thousand dollars. I’m nearly done now with all the work. All parts are here and I should have it running by the weekend. These cars are a lot of fun to drive. Especially the n62/n63 because they really have some power. I’ve spent maybe a thousand dollars. On the above parts and tools.

Bought my f10 M5 first thing I did was rod bearings ARP, cap bolts ARP, upgraded timing components, de-cat, water meth, cooler plugs, FMIC, the list is long but I knew going in same for my M3 I knew going in you must pay to play. If you can't afford 3-6k for upgrades and maintenance you need to move on to something less costly. Just the proper tires for these cars run $1,600. Let's not forget walnut blasting ever so often to deal with carbon on the valves the byproduct of direct injection..... BMW is a premium car manufacturer with very low service intervals on internals for smaller components either buy what you can wholly afford or keep complaining either way this is all very funny to me as this is all just common sense don't buy what you can't afford to maintain. 🤔 😉

The N63 is generally a good engine, although it does have some mechanical issues. An extended warranty would be genius.

Chris Gugleta you’re crazy, that engine is dysfunctional, very bad design, produce too much heat, burns through seals, oil leaks, and burns oil, you will need to add extra oil regularly, just a big waste.

As much as I love BMW and I'm on my 14th it's a 2011 550xi and this guy couldn't be more correct. It has cost me a fortune to maintain and I'm currently without a extended warranty so that means everytime I start my car I feel like a gangster from the 70s not knowing if it's gonna blow up when i start it lol. But at same time this is by the far the nicest BMW ive ever owned driving wise and the power is incredible AWD is like having an xtra 100hp BMWs awd is pretty damm good with a 40/60 split. Bottom line wouldnt recommend pre LCI absolutely not. Also people fail to mention there's not only the N63TU but BMW has done even more technical updates to the N63 after the original N63TU , so that you will find in 2016 and 2017 N63TU updates that went further. Anyway hope this was helpful.

Those u.s spec e36 m3s are out running every other BMW ever made in terms of milage. Iron block ! I'll take the 40 less hp of the euro spec m3 for the never ending motor.

Yeah I got the n62 engine. If you want a used bmw you gotta be willing to put the work into it. It’s an amazing drive though....when everything works well it drives like a dream. No problem is bigger than that.

Currently looking at buying a 2012 550xi with 120,000 miles great service records all at a bmw dealership. They are selling it to me for low blue book because it's a family member. What do you think? Safe buy?

i just backed out of a purchase on one of these because this car is right in the heart of the problem. It depends on if it has the N63 or N63TU and you can check that on bmw vin decoder.

I have a 2014 X6 50i. From new, I’ve spent $750 on the engine. 45,000 miles. Is it slowly starting to burn oil? Yes. But that’s why I bought an All State Power-train warranty at my BMW dealer. Peace of mind. Happy with my N63 2.0.

Double check with your insurance. Fidelity Warranty Services powertrain insurance does NOT cover this issue. Despite the cost of $3000. Recommend to sell the car before it is starting.

Markus Braun update: BMW now has a class action lawsuits against it regarding this problem. They fixed it. Didn’t charge a dime. The hardest thing was being without my car for 3 weeks. I was away for a long period during that time anyway.
