If you get a electronic parking brake failure and the brake is locked so the car cannot move you can use the emergency release to manually release the brake so you can drive.

Thanks for your video - great help as I had this issue this morning on my 2011 E70!!! Your trick fixed it but just to let you. know that my car has a ring on. top of the pin which is easy to pull rather than the need for the tool, which is also present.

NOTE, still e70, 2013 build the tool is gone and the nut has a pull loop! Same spot in USA model, left hand side of trunk but no tool needed. YOUR VIDEO HELPED ME SO MUCH!!

Worked a treat! Need to pull the cable up sharply and the vehicle slumps slightly when it’s done. Needed a few taps of the hammer to pull cable up fully

Thanks. Saved my friend’s heap of shit X5 from blocking my driveway. The pin is on the same side on a left hand drive model. It’s worth letting people know that you have to apply some force until you hear the loud release of the brake.

Yep left hand side and it definitely saved the day. Tow truck driver was about to quit and say there was nothing they could do. Probably makes repo-ing this car without keys turning the car on impossible without this knowledge.

To those of you that have the manual release pull pin are lucky. Newer BMW models do not have a manual release for parking brake at least for my x5. I hear the method is to cut the cable to the bad parking brake actuator this will release the parking brake.

@@theniecee1998 Hello first make sure there is no release button, the cables are not cheap it should have a red looking plastic key looking thing in the trunk unusually in the emergency compartment in the trunk. If not, so the cable is actually located under the vehicle, under the trunk area. One cable will be going to each rear wheel. However on the x4 I do not believe you have a cable, I believe your parking brake actuators are located on each wheel. Making this problem a pain in the u know what. If so you would have to remove the wheels if you don’t have enough access to it and use a tool to manually release it. You can try to remove the fuse wait a few minutes and put the fuse back in. Sometime this will release the parking brake if you are lucky if it does don’t engage the emergency brake until you get it fixed.

Had this issue as I was taking my 2008 x5 for its mot. Garage phoned 15 minutes later informing me that the car won't release the parking brake and I had the orange parking brake warning light on. The car also randomly screeched underneath as if something was malfunctioning whilst stationary and engine off. Tried the emergency release, this clicked and released, tried the reset but no joy. Warning light still on, can't get mot done. Car is going in to the garage to be diagnosed, suspected actuator issue??

@munchmuffin5033 it ended up being a faulty parking brake module. Quoted over £2k to repair.i returned the car to the garage and swapped for another car. I missed the x5 so purchased back once it was repaired

Need your help. I accidentally engaged the parking brake with the left rotor/disc removed. I heard a loud hiss and the 'parking brake failed' message appeared. The drum semi-circular brake pads look over-extended by a few mm and they do not retract anymore using the e-brake button. I tried yanking the manual release wire using the red tool, and it extends 8-10 cm roughly with minimal effort. Do you think I should try yanking past the effortless point? What should I be looking for? Will there be a click or something? Should the engine or the ignition be turned ON or can the car be completely OFF? I have a thread with photos if you google "Parking brake failed - I messed up" (copy&paste with the quotes).

@@munchmuffin5033 oh yes. I pulled with minimal force until it stopped. That was about 7 or 8 cm. Then I was scared to pull any further. After reading more on the subject I decided to pull further. So I pulled past the previous stopping point and it gave way. I heard a locking mechanism being released and my brakes were back to normal again.

@@munchmuffin5033 we used a computer to reset the parking brake after that. Using the manual release separates the lock inside the actuator which needs to be brought back into position.

+supermasterPIK hey. If there is a mechanical failure the control unit which contains the Motor will need to be replaced. However if it's a software issue as on the Bmws then try and locate the fuse for the system and give it shot. Disclaimer : what ever you try Is your own responsibility. There must be a manual release somewhere for the handbrake the on the other side of car. For example mine was in the back on the passenger side. Check the drivers side in the boot

to much work. shut down the computer(by turning off the car) take the key off ignition. wait 30 seconds and restart the computer (by turning on the car back up again). it happens to my X6 all the time.
