Good God there are some self-righteous comments on here! I've ridden most engine configurations over my 38 years of biking but still needed time to "learn" the R Nine T and Urban GS. Please try an Urban GS. More leg room, the suspension is less harsh, the wide bars make more sense and the exhaust sounds better. After half an hour I fell in love with it. The hairy-chested agricultural charm makes you feel heroic. Enjoyed the camera work and commentary, thanks.

Thank you very much Paul. It really seems that those who have actually thrown a leg over this machine know exactly what I was dealing with. The rest just immediately assume that i got my license in a Cornflakes box! The Urban GS sounds like it might be more the bike that i was expecting. This one is weirdly tight considering how big it looks! Thanks again for weighing in mate.

He has driven the poor thing like a 4 in line race bike. Just shift it at max 6000 revs using the clutch and enjoy the pops on the downshifts and you will have a blast on that bike.

'He' hasn't ridden it like anything. 'He' rode it like a bike he jumped on as the camera started rolling, on one of the most technical mountain passes on the planet. 'He' did have a blast and, as expected, took a little while to find the groove with an unfamiliar machine.

You can really tell a 4 cyl rider just can not understand the concept of low revs and torque of a twin. It used to do my mates head in when I blasted past him at 4000 rpm mid corner while he's banging the rev limit.

with respect, the boxer air cooled unit same as from the HP2 but detuned also has a NON slipper clutch gearbox, its been made that way as a pure riding experience with no gimmicks or trick, just the rider and his bike, so yes it will kick your ass on downshifts, the back wheel may step out or hop, clutchless up and down is not advised. I swapped my GSA for one of these as the GSA just held you hand all the time and wasn't really a bike you ride, The 9T is a rider's bike... great roads though, you just needed to know the bike 1st maybe

Wow. Just wow. Seems like everybody rides their bikes with velvet gloves and slippers on. These are performance machines. Manufactured to the highest tolerances to withstand hard use under pressure. If you think this engine didn't already get switched on and revved to the limiter on the factory line, you're living in a dreamworld. Not to mention the fact that the rev limiter is there to protect the engine. You could probably ride this bike just below the limiter ALL day. Hell people even chip them to RAISE the limiter! Bottom line, no poor little fluffy eared boxer engines were harmed in the making of this video.

I have recently bought an R1200R LC, having come from a Z750s. 600 miles in and I'm figuring all these little quirks out for myself still, so I know exactly what you went through. The criticism on here does feel a bit unwarranted! The drivetrain definitely wants to be ridden in its own special way, but there's nobody to tell you that, and it's not something you pick up overnight. The gearbox indeed does not like clutchless (it gets better after third gear), and you need to rely on the low-end torque more than the high-end revs (but you picked up on that yourself half way through the video). Great sights, nice honest bike report and cool overall video!

Me neither. Though nowadays, 'running in' is more of a precautionary phase instigated by the manufacturers to catch any loose fixings or foreign bodies in the oil before you can give it full beans. If for one second you don't think this engine has already seen the rev limiter before it even went into the bike, I think you'll find that you are very much mistaken.

Andy Man Cam yeah, did that and yet at 8 minutes into the video you’re complaining about the “kick” of the shifting while you wonder if it has a speed shifter [ie clutchless shifting].
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
Well clearly you didn't pay attention, because at 3 minutes in, I clearly state that I don't think it has 'Shift Assist'. Which in itself is NOT a clutchless system. Merely a quickshift feature which allows you to perform upshifts without using the clutch. After this, I am just trying to get used to an unfamiliar bike, on unfamiliar roads and perform manual clutchless shifts. If you do these yourself, then you'll know that every machine is different and takes a little while to get the hang off. If you don'T do clutchless shifting, for whatever reason, then you've waded unprepared into entirely the wrong conversation.

I have never known such incredible proliferation of the “look how right I am” attitude as in the comments of this video. It’s incredible, and a little bit depressing. Some of the most beautiful sights available to the biking community have been lovingly explored, recorded, edited and published in stunning HD for your viewing pleasure. Yet all you can get hung up on is whether or not I knew if the bike had a clutch!? (FYI, as I already said in answer to your strangely short sighted first post, i knew from the off that the bike had a clutch. No DCT System. No CVT. No automatic gearbox. A clutch.) So not only have you sidestepped the awe-inspiring beauty at the core of this video but you’ve also completely ducked the whole story that has brought about this wonderful riding opportunity. I couldn’t research, because I only knew 5 minutes before that I would be riding this bike. Also, all the research in the world wouldn’t prepare you for the characteristics of this bike when ridden for the first time. Ultimately I feel very sorry for you that you and many others have missed out on the wonder that lies within this video. Just to take an opportunity to try and kick somebody who has done something imperfectly. Of course the overall and underlying truth is that I do in fact thank you all. Your small minded Nitpicking, coupled with your short sighted inability to say “oh, ok Andy. Fair enough” and move on has actually rocketed this video into the position of being my fastest viewed video in the first week since I started making videos. It’s not the audience that I would have perhaps wished for, but youtube only cares about eyes pointed at screens. And you lot have absolutely nailed it! Congratulations.

I too had an R1100RT for 4 years, many an acre we ploughed ... great vid Andy, well played.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
Not really. I've got a quickshifter on my own bike and I've found that a tiny backing off of the throttle during the shift can mean 2 things. Firstly the gear goes in even quicker and secondly that the revs are better matched for the next gear giving a much smoother shifting experience. So when it's more about smoothness than extra tenths of a second, a little roll-off can go a long way!

It has a mechanical throttle, the sputtering only happens if the throttle is rapidly chopped. Clutchless shifting requires much higher RPMS for blipping than when using the clutch. More than likely you weren't comfortable enough with the bike to force out reasons why RnineT owners tend to do suspension upgrades. In terms of going wide in some of the turns... it doesn't 'like' coasting into corners and prefers trail-braking. Might have something to do with the lower center of gravity. Also, stock suspension leaves a lot to be desired. I did find the scenery amazing and appreciated a lot of the commentary. I appreciate reviews where the person has some criticisms of a vehicle and they aren't verbally masturbating.
@AndyManCam

If I'd have had the revs any higher when I was trying clutchless shifts, this bike would have thrown me off the back! But yeah, didn'T really get any speed and I certainly wasn't comfortable yet by the end of the ride. Stelvio is NOT a road that you're comfortable on even on a well known bike!! I like to keep all my videos real. If I gush about something, I really like it. If I see something I don'T like, I'll talk about it.

Looked like a beautiful place. The RnineT is very mechanical. I give you a lot of credit for taking a road that challenging on a strange bike with notoriously horrible stock suspension. Mine is/was a 2014 and rides over 50 miles were killing the lower back, stopped poorly, cornered sluggishly, but suspension upgrades improved it a great deal. I was probably "too fat" for stock suspension at 6'2" 195lbs.

It's a big twin with shaft drive! getting straight on one off an IL4 takes time to get clutch free shifts right. The R9T doesn't have shift assist so use the clutch if you can't get 'clutchless shifts' right for the sake of an hour... I'm on my second BMW (r1100S/R1200S) in 11 years and find them easy and I chop and change from a Kawasaki ZRX1200R (lovely gearbox/easy clutchless changes) and a griso 1200 that I just can't quite get the clutchless sorted out yet after 1800 miles. I took one of those R9T out and even at 5'7" I noticed the lack of space between the pegs and seat but 'wow' what a laugh of a bike. Great fun.(and I had the clutchless changes sorted 100yds down the road ;-)

I don't remember winging at any point Heather. I was merely pointing out that the bike wasn't what I was used to and the characteristics were very strange to me. If you’re hearing winging, then that’s because winging is what you want to hear. I was having the time of my life, i promise you. I chose the bike I really wanted to try. Surprise surprise, this was the first time I’d ever had the opportunity to ride an R9T. It didn’t ride like I expected it to and i discovered that it’s not my dream machine. Oddly enough, everybody else on the day who rode that bike for the first time made much the same discoveries that I did. Thanks for posting this Andy! I had a go on a demonstrator RnineT last year and - coming from an old Kawasaki GPZ500S - I thought the BMW was a hoot to ride. Had the pegs down within an hour! Power was about double the 500 so that prompted some swift recalibration of my right hand and ergonomics were not perfect with an upholstered plank for a seat, but overall I really liked the bike. I guess the agricultural feel may be down to you riding far more modern machinery? Anyway excellent video and it instantly put the Stelvio on my bucket list. Cheers!

Funny thing too, actual 1st gear switchbacks in the U.S. are pretty rare, I don't think most have any idea what they are like. It's not something to easily get practice with here. To make it more fun, the places that have them where I am are heavily frost heaved, basically random ripples the size of a bowling ball all through the turn surface. Nothing like a nice off camber 1st gear switchback to put a little zip in ya.

Clothes do not maketh the man. It looks like a retro, but it’s an electric fuel injected, traction controlled, ABS toting, taught framed, supple-sprung modern bike. I expected it to ride as such. If I wanted a bike to ride like a tractor, I’d have jumped aboard a 70‘s classic. Kawasaki managed to make a retro style machine that rides like a modern supernaked. Even Honda managed it (i had one for 2 years and would describe it as being infinitely more fun to ride than the R9T). The blame for the mismatch between my expectations and BMW‘s execution simply cannot be placed at my feet. The bike has 99 fans, but this boy ain’t 1. Shame really as I totally wanted to love this bike.

Due to your astounding rudeness, I can’t be bothered to formulate this reply in German. But in any case, with only 20 minutes to ride a new bike and on one of the most complicated mountain passes available, i think i should be forgiven for taking a minute or two to get used to how a bike rides. It was quite obvious to me that it was not a 4 cylinder. The huge Boxer tractor engine between my legs was a big clue. It’s also important to note that this engine was DESIGNED to be revved to 6000 U/min. At 6000 it is producing the maximum torque. The rev limiter is actually at 8,500 U/min. It’s always a good idea to check your numbers before you start throwing your weight around on the ever so critical interwebs. Also I own a 4 cylinder bike that will happily rev to 12,000 U/min before you have to shift. So I know how that feels too. All in all, thanks for your little rant and also for your dirty ‘Daumen runter’ protest. It all helps!! I wish you a happy new year full of false neutrals! Prost!!

I haven’t ridden a scooter for about 12 years. What I have learned to do in that time is clutchless shift. But it doesn’t work very well on this bike. Oddly enough, all the decent people who own one, admit that it doesn’t work and that they don’t care. All the people who’ve ridden one, agree that it’s a quirk of the bike. But all the armchair warriors that haven’t ever ridden one and want to throw some bitterness around, jump on the band wagon of slating the skill and intelligence of the rider. When all he’s really doing, is trying out something different, for the first time. This video was a part of an amazing experience. But it’s effects have seriously damaged my beliefs that there are good people out there and that the internet deserves my efforts. Do better. Be better.

Armchair warrior I'm not this is the first time I've commented on anything like this ,I think you are going to get criticism the good and the bad as you can see .I probably should have worded the first comment better. Clutchless shifting on the bikes I have owned through the years Honda, older Triumphs, Yamaha , Norton (1971), Kawasaki, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Harley Davidson ,newTriumphs .Ducatis yes the others wouldn't bother either not made for it or too old ,so I've had just a little bit of experience (40years) .The 2018 Triumph Thruxton I have I did it but by mistake it will do it but I see no point in it unless your racing,I think the idea has come from Moto GP and World SBK, etc these bikes are made for it and yes there are road/sportbikes now that are designed /made for it a through off from Moto GP and World SBK.I don't think the BMW R nine T is in this category Cheers Barry Mahan

Apology warmly accepted! I also apologize for the overly defensive reply! To be honest, the way i was shifting made me cringe too. But with such a different characteristic from the machine, it took time to get used to it. Plus the guy in front of me (very narrow mindedly, i think) jumped on a bike that he knew well and was riding rather spiritedly! I wanted to try something completely new to me. I totally agree with you that this bike is not in the category that needs the sort of riding that invites clutchless shifting. On my own slightly racier bike i find that clutchless shifting makes for a smoother riding experience. But then now I have a quickshifter so it’s even more effortless. I’m certain that with more time, i could have adjusted my own attitude to better suit the character of the R9T. I definitely in no way intended for this video to be a negative opinion of the bike. I still think it’s one of the most beautiful stock bikes out there! 👍🏻

Gosh - what a terrible ride on such a beautiful bike. Das kommt einer Vergewaltigung gleich. In den Drehzahlbegrenzer? Peinlich. I feel sorry for the bike.

I can imagine! Though the 'semi-Knobblies' on the next bike I rode on this day were surprisingly useable! I managed to (accidentally) back it in a few times and locked up the front twice, with no nasty surprises!

Wow. When did everybody get so mean?! If i gave a fraction of a toss about your opinion I might even be slightly offended! Problem is that you don’t know me. And given the tone of your first attempts at contact with me, I’m quite glad. But also by not knowing me, you lose any credibility that would otherwise give you the provenance required to make such a statement and for it to bear any weight. I wish you a good day and I hope you gain as much validation as you crave through your ‘stranger’ insulting endeavours.

Love the look of the R nine T. Not sure the boxer is the right power source though. Must have indeed seemed strange coming from your FZ1. Once again, lovely bit of footage. Enjoyed it, as always!

Me too. Beautiful bikes. I really wanted to like it a lot more though. If the handling had been a bit softer, I'd understand the heavy drive. But it felt sporty and rigid, just didn't drive like that!

Not once did i bitch or complain. I observed. I had a great time in fact. I was also thrown the keys to the bike 30 seconds before we rode off. Schaaf works for a motorbike magazine and receives bikes for several days at a time. Yes, he’s a skilled rider, but he also has far more time and opportunity to get used to the machines he rides. Have you ridden an R9T?

So you should already know the eccentricities of the bike and how it’s different to others. Yet instead, you decide to be aggressive and holier than thou about it. Good biking spirit there.

AndyManCam it’s those details and uniqueness that make this machine unique. You were bashing it the whole time and went about praising the apparels you were wearing instead. That’s very disrespectful to your viewers who want a true and tried testament of what this bike can do. Every time you get on a new bike you become a beginner, we all know that. Well than how about truly trying the bike out, instead of giving your viewers a wrong opinion based on an all of a sudden random ride. Why do you think your video has sooo much hate. It’s the way you went about it. It’s not about your shifting, yeas it was crap. But so what you weren’t used to this bike. It’s the disrespect what bothered.
@AndyManCam

I couldn’t have been more honest mate. I said exactly what i thought and felt, as it happened. The only disrespect here is that you’re disregarding my opinions simply because they don’t correspond with yours. Wake up. Not everybody likes what you like.

Imagine if everybody bagging your riding had to link a vid of their riding to their post for all of us to see! How different things might be here on U-toob! Having said that, I did say to my self a coupla times "use the effin clutch man", whilst watching. I had an old R80GS way back in the day and it had a much heavier box than anything Japanese I have ridden, I guess things don't really change much? I must admit though, i'm old school, having done a lot of miles over a lot of years on bikes and I have never had ABS, let alone a quickshift! I'd love something like this bike and i'd happily use the clutch like I always have. Happy riding!
