BMW R1250GS Adventure 3 months later

After having ridden the BMW 1250 GS Adventure for 3 months and 4600 km, I am going through what I have done to the bike to better meet my needs:
Denali lights, front and brake
GS Bash plate (BMW)
MRA windscreen (MRA)
Lowered footpegs (Touratech)
Handlebar raisers (Wunderlich)
Toolkbox (bought from Wunderlich)
Pannier net inserts (Wunderlich)
With these changes and additions, I feel the bike is better fitted for a long ride.

Just a note on the toolbox: Water gets inside and stays there. Some of my tools had rusted. The padding on the lid does not keep water out, but acts more like a sponge.

Unless you carry a tyre pump then really the tyre repair kit or toolbox is really no good to you, i would rather carry a the touratech fuel container and put it where the toolbox goes

Thank you for taking the time to create and post this video. Very practical and informative. Frankly, it is exactly what I was hoping to find and view. While all the items you added to your bike make very good sense, the most important one to me was your tool kit and your statement on how very few times you’ve used your tool kit. Obviously, you were referencing the reliability of the bike. I have been pondering for years the notion of owning and riding the GS. Yet, I’ve avoided getting one, mostly due to the comments, remarks, and discussions on BMW reliability. I am almost 70 years old, and I currently have two bikes that I ride regularly, a 2008 Honda Goldwing GL1800A and a 2004 ST1300A. They are the last of over a dozen bikes I’ve had, among them being a couple of off-road capable bikes. I miss being able to go off-pavement on a motorcycle, enough to consider getting an ‘adventure’ type bike. As old as I am, I’m still in fairly good shape. Reflexes remain fairly sharp and stable. So, I keep riding. And every time I pass by a gravel road, more often than not, I want to “venture off’ on it. Hence, the desire for a bike like the GS. I don’ have any desire or time (after all, I’m 70 LOL) to spend and experiment which adventure type bike would suite me better over another. So the GS is high, if not top on my list. Your video has provided me additional confidence to consider the GS. If I go for it, I will reference your video on the accessories I will add to it. It will very likely be my last bike I buy.

It is true that there a lot of stories of GS’s breaking down somehow. But there a lot of GS’s out there on the roads. A lot. I don’t think there are more problems with GS than with most other brands. But it is true for BMW and all other brands, that new technology by definition is new and less tested, so things can go wrong. I just haven’t had any problems, nor have my buddies. At least nothing that didn’t come from crashing it. I haven’t ridden a Goldwing or an ST, so I can’t compare. I do’t think the GS is too comfortable at speeds higher than 140 km/h, but I don’t ride much highway. Before this bike, I had an air cooled 2011 GS, with more than 90,000 km including very bad Ukrainian backroads, and a good share of offroad crashes. No issues. Nothing. Regular maintenance, taking good care of it. Have I been lucky? Maybe. So my experience (and not dismissing others’ experience in any way) is that they’re reliable. Oh, actually, there has been one thing with the new bike. One of the fog lights could not hold water out, so water got inside. It could have been an easy fix, as it was clear that an o-ring was’t fitted correctly. But as BMW does not make them to repair, the housing could not come off without breaking it. So the entire fog light unit had to be replaced. Under warranty, no issues, it just bothered me that what would have been a 5 minutes fix, ended in a unit replacement. I like especially the extra box to store stuff. Tire repair kit and tool kit fits well inside it. And the light set up is well thought out and sets your bike off from many others too. One more thing I would put is a fender extender to help keep the mud and rain out better . love your skid plate too! Great job on all your modifications!

Danke mein Freund, for doing what so few other people do, actually saying the cm and inches. It makes watching a video so much easier when someone says "I'm 184cm tall that translates to 6 feet". I know it seems like a small thing, but after watching literally hundreds of video reviews of different bikes, lots of which were made by Europeans, it really adds a lot to the video. Now I don't have to pause the video and do the math, which is not hard, but I can't do it in my head on the fly either, it makes the video more watchable, if you know what I mean. I subscribed and hit the notification bell because if this is how you make videos, I want to watch more of them. Be safe out there! Tschuss! John Moffett I’m on a trip through Eastern and CentrAl Europe right now and needed to tools. I was hit from behind and my right pannier was ripped off. But the bike is hardly to blame. No other damage to the bike though. The left pannier got some beatings some days later when I fell on a dirt track that had a deep rut I didn’t see as it was covered with grass. Thanks for watching.

I'm 6'7" and looking to buy this bike. Worries me a bit that you were already needing to get teisers and lower pedals. I could get the rallye seat, but it's a harder material to sit on.

Hi, if you want the bike, don’t let that get in the way. Take it for a test ride. If it feels good, go for it. It may very well work for you just as it is. There are lots of options to get the bike exactly how you want it. I rode a K1300 years ago and got a Sargent Seat. Worked well. On my 2011 GSA, I bought a Kahedo seat from Touratech, as it was cheaper than the Sargent Seat. I should have returned it. Not wanting to spend too much more on my mistakes, I went for the cheaper Airhawk.The Airhawk is just a working, cheap solution to prevent a sore rear. It doesn’t look that great on the bike, though. But that’s what I ended up with. The stock seat gets a lot of criticism, but I find it much better than the Kahedo seat (at least the one I bought). With your height, I would put the seat in the upper position. Set aside money for the raisers, in case you need it. The angle of the handlebar and levers are easy to adjust, and may be very helpful as well. The raisers are primarily helpful when you stand up riding (offroad). Don’t go for the lowered pegs immediately. I have yet to ride really long distances to see if they make any difference. When I’m on my trips, I normally ride 10 hours per day (including breaks - approx 60/40 moving/stopped time), and what I am trying to do, really, is to move out the “soreness point” as long as I can. The gear I wear is part of that equation too. The way I place my foot on the pegs too. That was a long rambling answer, sorry about that. I hope at least some of it makes some sense. Basically similar kit to mine, I have the Puig touring screen, Bumot panniers, top box and tool box (better quality than BMW but fit the OEM racks). The Wunderlich cockpit bags are really useful, love the Velcro idea😀

Just a note - a lot of people are adding handle bar raisers, pls be careful with this. I get it as Im 1.9m. BUT this causes you to stand up more when you are on the pegs which takes your weight of the front wheel. You see where this is going? Some very very bad crashes caused by doing this (off road)

Nice bike. This is the first time I’ve seen one of these videos and your old bike looks like it could be the oil cooled GSA bike. From a few little things that you mentioned it seems like you are not an off-road rider? I’m curious as to what made you buy the newer bike?

It depends what you mean by offroad. I don't ride anything extremely technical, and my travels are the destination and the road that leads to it. Sometimes it is gravel, sometimes really bad tarmac with huge potholes, and sometimes it is smooth tarmac. The majority of kilometers I do are on tarmac (or hard packed gravel). Some of the older videos show the roads that I like to travel (check out my Ukraine videos, e.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l17EaGedap51rpI ). I understand that what I said came across as if I need to stand straight up. That is of course not what I want, but I found myself bending the knees too much. I never had that issue with the old GSA (yes, it is oil cooled). I found myself leaning over the handlebars, so raising those, and lowering the pegs gave a position for me knees to better control the bike against the tank. Also, it it is more comfortable when sitting down (especially after 6 hours of riding). Thanks for watching :-)

Many people have asked me why I haven’t (so called upgraded) to the new bikes from my 2011 GSA and as I asked in my comment, I am Justin curious to why you made the change?

sumporfuk Primarily the engine. It runs a lot smoother and vibrates a lot less. Also, I have been running hotter than I’d like. Also, the old one has a lot “patina”, and looking at replacing, starter, crash bars, panniers, windscreen, handlebar, I was looking at a significant cost. But the new one does not take me places the old didn’t. It just does it smoother and more comfortable. :-)

I honestly don’t use it much. I have the same concerns as you. The holder holds it fine, never had issues with it falling off. The rubber knobs comes off easily, and I have lost a few when grabbing my helmet that I often place on top of the grip. The fabric padding inside the helmet drags the rubber knobs off. They pop on as easily as they come off, but the problem is that I normally don’t notice it has come off before I have started riding. Once a rubber knob is off, it does’t grip on to anything. Now with mechanical sensor shift on the phones and what not, I’m not confident that the phone will make it. So I have it in a pocket. I use my garmin as my primary nav device. Thanks for watching 😊

Hi I saw u add loud horn. Been wondering is there any problem with the alarm system? Will it still work when u replace the horn? Saw some comment replace horn will not work on bike alarm system was it true? Said alarm only work with original horn.. Thinking replace to loud horn as original horn too soft. The original horn is not replaced. The new is connected to a Denali Cansmart. Doing it that way, the horn is separated from the bike electronics as the cansmart only listens to the canbus and powers the stuff separately. Thanks for watching 😊

Robert Chaussé No, I didn’t. Well, kind of anyway. I used to sit on the AirHawk seat, but just replaced it with the “Cool cover” from Wunderlich (part no 42721-110). The AirHawk is slightly more comfortable, but the cool cover looks better (imo) and doesn’t get wet. I used the Cool Cover on my current 9,000 km trip to Murmansk, and it works great for me. Barbary Lion I can’t say as I don’t have any experience with earlier LC models. Kilometers on a full tank really depends on the riding style. Anywhere from 400 to 600, I’d guess.

You will need 1) the CANsmart controller, 2) pair of D4's, 3) Mounting bar. That's it. Let me know if you plan to install a brake light, I can share the issue I had with it before I got it to work. Hi, yes, so I lowered the pegs primarily because I was bending me knees too much. My seat is in the lower position, so heightening the seat would probably help too. And with your 200cm that might be the solution if you haven't already. With my 184, I wanted to keep my feet on the ground. So I thought the option might be lowered pegs. I have yet to ride a long trip (next week I'm doing a 3 week 8,000 km roundtrip), so I can't say if they are 100% worth it yet. But so far, so good. I got mine from Touratech, part number 01-045-5316-0. They are quite easy to install, just need a little fiddling with the retainer spring and not loosing the security clip. Whether not 2 cm makes a difference, is something I have yet to find out. My advice to you would try the seat in the high setting. Then, if you're also thinking about something for your butt, then using an AirHawk (should you consider going down that path, will add a little as well). You can get an Airhawk for same as the lowered pegs - and your butt will love you as well. Yes, you will probably need to adjust your shift peg as well.

dcdell2008 Cool. In 2012 I met a really great guy who was stationed 3 years at a base in Eckernforde, Germany. We had some great rides, and it turned in to be a great friendship. He returned to the States, so we dont ride together anymore, but we’re still in contact every now and then. Riding in the States and Canada is on my bucket list. One day ... 😊

What make is the radiator guards?

MotoVlogging with VMan They are the BMW plastic guards. They came across a little “cheap” at first (they aren’t that pricey), but I’m hoping they do the trick. When riding gravel (depending on the tires) a fair amount of rocks are thrown into the bike, so I wasn’t comfortable not having any.

Hi, it is the “aluminium tank” option, that is an option when you order the bike - at least it Europe. Then I added tank pads as I noticed that the surface got a hazy look where my knees touched the tank when I was standing up riding. Those are aftermarket from Wunderlich. Thanks for watching :-)

Jeremiah Alfrey I think any official BMW dealer will. They order it from BMW as it has to mach your other key (and your bike). It actually took quite some time for mine. I’m not sure where the delay was, but it took a couple of months.

@@aernan Hmm.. I don't know - maybe. Where are you from? It is part number 51 25 7688674 and called a "Key without Transponder" and ordered with your bike's VIN.

I guess you could, but having a place to put the gloves where it won’t easily come off is convenient at toll booths or border crossing booths. I haven’t really thought about how it looks, but I can see your point. My RAM mount for the phone isn’t too nice looking either :-) thanks for watching.

nice video! Where did you get that extra compartment box behind the left pannier box? I have an 850 GS adventure, but couldn't find it on Wunderlich, or maybe looking in wrong department?

It's what they call a "Case box". I don't think it fits anything besides the R1250GSA. Touratech has some for other R models, but that doesn't help you much with the F model. I think the chain drive gets in the way. Have you considered alternatives, like shop.touratech.se/bag-to-fit-under-luggage-rack-on-bmw-r1250gs-r1200gs-2013-onwards-f850gs-f750gs.html ?

I only get used bikes. Because i am in a very tight budget. For that reason i buy what is available. I never understood why people buy brown new expensive machines that do not fit. If i had the money i would nor be buying brand, i would be buying fit first

Tax2Me Good point. I tried different makes and models before getting it and found the one was the one. Having had a GSA before, I may have been a little biased. Only after lots of hours of riding and a couple of thousand kilometers, I found that there were a couple of things that could be better for me. I must admit though, that the lowered pegs haven’t returned on the investment yet. Thanks for watching.

Safety paranoia strikes again - if you want to be safe on the road don't buy the motorcycle in the first place. And if you do, don't make a joke out of yourself with all those "safety" gadgets - GS is a terribly big bike, hard to miss, especially with the LED headlight. Second mistake is the standing totally upright - you are not really supposed to do that, especially to lock your knees and elbows. When riding offroad you should have your knees bent a little bit, etc and also you do lean forward sometimes, depends on the terrain, etc. but your idea about standing straight is misguided - sure it's "comfortable" but it's the wrong technique. What a waste of a bike on someone that has completely no clue.

It does have that clicking sound. I will check with my dealer when I get back home (I’m currently on a short trip to Poland). I assume it’s the valves, but not sure if it supposed to sound different. Seems to be a lot whore are having that “feature” when googling it.

Minimax Those are pads that are supposed keep the tank from getting too scratched from my knees. Particular when I’m standing up riding. Thanks for watching.
