BMW R1250GS features the new ShiftCam technology that brings more mid-range torque power: 143 NM and 136 HP (compared to the 125 NM, 125 HP figures for the R1200GS). But is it enough to beat the thrill-seeker KTM 1290 Super Adventure S (160 hp)? We took both of them to the race-track to find out. Place your bets!

Performance on a race track is about the last comparison I'd be interested in for this kind of bike.

Why? If you want a adventure bike capable of on and off road, why would you not want the best of both worlds? This review helped me in my adventure bike purchase decision a lot! The KTM is a master at both I feel, and unlike most adventure bikes, this has everything i am looking for, sports bike performance, and dirt bike rugged aggression for off road!
@wileym
@wileym 5 жыл бұрын
On road? Yes. Off Road? Yes. Race track? Non. Why do you care what the top end on a track is when it's unlikely you'll ever go there? Adventure bikes need decent road manners, decent mileage and range and good off road manners. How fast you can hang a knee seems irrelevant. I'd rather have the 790. I'll bet the BMW gets better miles per repair too. The S1000XR would blow both of them off the track and still manage some trail riding.

@@wileym Well sir, to be honest I want to know the full capabilities of anything, if your searching for a vehicle that is supposed to be top performance on road and top performance off, wouldn't you want to know the limits and have full understanding of what your driving? I'm a huge motorcycle and vehicle enthusiast and also a mechanic, I love to hear the engine roar and see it pushed to its limits that way I KNOW what I have! We all have our preferences sir, that's just me. If you have a gaming laptop you want to know how much you can crank up the graphics settings, same with good sounding home theater system, goes for anything.
@wileym

@@bewaretheclaw Not so much. The only bikes I have wound out to the maximum were Harleys I had modified to go faster. And a couple of small bikes. Most other bikes are already capable of going far faster than I have any wish to go and handle way better than I can use so, no, I only need to know that they will do what I personally want them to do. I know my home theatre will blow my eardrums out. I don't need to actually play it that loud to prove the point. As for gaming, that's the equivalent of a dedicated track bike. You can do a track day on a moped. It doesn't really belong there any more than an adventure bike.

A lot of difference in power...and the track has a lot of straights so...no surprise. BMW never intended to compete in speed with the KTM, but in driving and traveling pleasure. ✌️

I have rode both bikes and the BMW is fast in the sense that number change quite fast on the speedometer but KTM is fast in the sense you are constantly popping front wheel and spinning the rear tire :D And KTM has even more "usable" power since it vibrates so much that you have to always keep over 3000 rpm on the clock so you end up riding one gear smaller than on the bmw, and the top end is also just as usable power as anything else, the gearbox is there for a reason :D

This is why real adventure riders are going more and more for middle and lightweight bikes with more agility and less power. Adventure bikes belong in the wilderness, not on a track and the more track ready they become, the less off road capable they become at the same time. They become more work and less fun except on dry, well surfaced roads. BMW is selling more and more of their middleweight bikes and now with the G310GS people are going to start working with that platform. Rally Raid already makes a full off-road conversion kit for it. Get it a larger tank and it could go around the world. I wouldn't be surprised to bee BMW bump that to the mid 400s and sell a ton of them. This high power race is so totally counter what adventure riding is all about.

You are somehow right on the off road capabilities and adequacy for RTW trips, a lighter weight bike will save you much trouble and make your life much easier. However, this "arms race" between the big trail bikes, IMO, started in earnest with the 2010 Ducati multistrada, who dared put a superbike engine in a trail bike, and the ms is such a magnificent bike, it would be a crying shame if it hadn't existed. I tell you, I have a multistrada, (my 5th big bike after my 1st ever, a 125cc Casal), I just can't put words to how much fun this bike is. But yes, if I ever do a RTW trip, (an old dream of mine), I will take a 450 to 650 trail bike, then it's all left to the tyre choice.
@wileym
@wileym 4 жыл бұрын
@@antwan37 I love Ducatis in general and the MS is one of the best. (My first two bikes were Duc singles) One of the first bikes with different modes so you could take the edge off the power for off-road use. The power wars are fun but it would be a lot better for riding if they concentrated on usable torque. If this was 3 years ago I would have one of the Yamaha 700s.

Of course the Multi it was faster than the other two on a track, but KTM was slightly slower than BMW in that occasion. I love your content but I don't think these two bikes are meant for spirited riding or racing. We already have so many segments of bikes that are made just to do that, super-naked's, hyper-naked's, super bikes, hyper bikes, track only bikes like the HP4 and so on. Most people buy the GS, Tiger, SAR or Multistrada for crossing continents. Still if you wanted you could have brought the BMW S1000XR, which competes directly with the 1290. Just my two cents, not hating in any way. Keep up the great work!

Amrit Swain i dont agree. I have seen a lot of people on these that ride fast and shoot past guys on full race bikes on the street. Even though they are going fast as well. Talking to a lot of riders on these, they are former or still circuit racers but their body just cant handle the driving position on those anymore. That is why they got one of those. So they like it that they still can go fast on these bikes.

I had a gs in the montains of france for a while, if you want to test a motorbike on a circuit with long curves use a racing motorbike. If you want to test a motorbike on small mountain roads balancing from one side to the other in second then take the gs. This bike is a dream , amazing torque , gravity center so low that you just need your knees to drive it, incredible suspensions securing your path over bad asphalt. No sport bike will challenge you there, believe me, I talk from experience.

The Beemer runs out of breath too early - right when my Multistrada is just getting into the power the Beemer is going flat and asking you to shift, (and the KTM is very close to the 1260 Multi... bit stronger in the midrange where the Multi is strong off idle and at the top end). The Beemer is actually right with them at the low and into the start of the midrange... but after that it's goodbye GS.

I knew it was the one with the glasses the test pilot !! Two magnificent maxitrail bikes and overall compared to other mounts. Bestial the KTM and BMW: the Austrian is like a good diamond and the German like another good diamond but, more polished and detailed with respect to its design and throughout the bike, especially in every detail of each piece that is at a level of premium. Is BMW the same polished diamond in its mechanics compared to the KTM?

I own a KTM adventure and agree about track times or even off road prowess. The GS wins in the resale and comfort. I love my Adventure but you can't ride it easy and kick back. It is a high maintenance beast that hates going slow.

Great video. It’s good to know stats like the ones you’ve produced here. The KTM IS the faster bike which I think we all suspected. I’m concerned with all the issues the KTM is having especially with the electronics. Ive been monitoring several KTM, BMW and ADV Facebook pages. The majority of the GS owners are posting about their newest farkle while most of the posts for the KTM seem to be about their frustrations with dealing with their dealer about another issue with their bike. I want to love the KTM but if I were going to pull the trigger on one of these bike I’d go with the GS due to its reliability. Although time will tell how the shift cam works long term.

Shifter on my '17 1200GS Rallye is same, doesnt like to go next gear above about 5500rpm. Have to clutch it everytime. Full torque is at closer to 6700-6800rpm should be where you can quick shift. Sounds like they havent fixed that deficiency in this model either.

An italian channel did a similar test with the multistrada also. The result was a ktm and bmw very close. I think it is interesting. The reaction you described are the same but probably the bikes are sensitive to tires and track. Interesting for enduros. I love this tests.

Did he have the BMW on Endurance mode, bliper - quick shift, try using that in the winter in Scotland. People buy these bikes and hide them in there garage. I have a BMW GS Rally TE and it got me back into ryding after 10 years. I had a Susuki GXSR 600 ex track bike. I love my BMW, it's a great go to work all year round bike, it's very comfortable to ride, after all who test rides an adventure bike on a race track, trol trollo.???

KTM are also very good offroad. If you haven’t seen the KTM Australia rally (especially the 2018 Outback), I highly recommend it. 200+ amateur riders going places you simply couldn’t take a GS...very hard offroad sections with big rocks that I know none of my 3 GS would have survived

Before I even knew the result, I knew the austrian was faster than the Berliner. That's just the way it feels. Also true is that the KTM feels a bit twitchier at high speeds. Both bikes' supensions feel tremendous and with its latest 2019 tweaks, KTM finally caught up to BMW's ultra nice blend of comfort and performance. To people saying the KTM should be put against the Multi 1260 and the S1000XR, I disagree. They look only at max power and performance, but the thing is the KTM 1290 can still really be used as a trail bike. You can take that thing (I have the 1190 but the argument stays) on the autobahn and blast like a big, and then stop and take a single track trail between rocks and logs, which is something you'd never do on the Multi (not enduro) or the S1000XR (which I even preferred engine wise to my KTM, but is quickly getting you scared even on light off-road stuff)

Initially I was going to buy the BMW but due to the local dealer's terrible presales service I decided to look at options. I am down to 3 bikes - the KTM1290, the BMW R1250 and the Africa twin. I live in Vancouver and service is a big one for me. The local BMW dealer (there is only one) is terrible. Complaints are numerous and they seem more motivated by $$$ than they do in helping customers. They dont even allow test rides. This alone may knock BMW of the running. I am glad I watched this because the BMW is an expensive bike with average performance and the local service is abysmal plus I will never buy a bike I cant test ride.

Nice video guys as usual, but isn't it a bit unfair comparison? I am a GS lover and owner for years and i have experience on KTM as well. Before i watch the video - which repeat is great in all respects - i knew the result. KTM is faster and delivers power more brutally than the GS, whilst Gs was rolling on spokes and the tyres of both was not designed for track. The question is... Who will buy a big adventure bike like one of these to use it for track days? How many of the normal riders would understand the difference and the limits of each Bike? Numbers and tests are always welcome but at the end of day neither KTM neither BMW built those machive machines for race tracks. Anyhow... for me the meaning of riding is to feel/smell/seing things. In this field both are great motorcycles. Travelling a continent/countly/city is not a time attack battle...
