Just did this on my 2020 1250GS. What joy to finally get rid of that stinking ticking noise!!! What's upsetting is while back, I took bike into dealer for first service and told them about the ticking sound from the left side. They heard it too and said that does sound strange. I left the bike there for them to look into it. I assumed it would be covered by warranty. Went to pick up bike few days later. They charged me around $400.00. Claimed the ticking sound was less noticeable when they took off the touratech crash bars. Said they talked with BWM headquarters directly and was told that the ticking was normal, so NOT covered by warranty! Love the bike, but BMW does not take care of its customers. Obviously they figured out the problem and found a simple solution. So instead of changing the tensioner under warranty, they get greedy and charge $150.00 for replacement tensioner! Sorry for long post. Just venting at this point I guess.

I totally understand. The dealer where I bought my bike was very good to deal with. The service department was also good and told me that BMW considers the noise normal, but the service department did not agree, but they said there was not much they could do about, and said there would be no point in them looking at. I do all my own service, so even though the part is over priced, it was an easy fix that I could do my self. The bike sounds as it should.... I just wish I would have kept it.

Can confirm that this works 👌🏻 had the new tensioner installed by my dealer. Interestingly the number provided in the video does not show up in the dealer system if they search by the bike, only one number exists. But if they manually search for the number provided here it pops up alright with compatibility to the 1250 boxers. Weird but the difference is indeed night and day 👍👍👍

I own an 2022 R1250GS and this EXACT noise just started at about the 3300 mile mark. had the dealer order me this part because my engine has the 17mm Tensioner installed. The parts guy said this part number is the only one showing and there is no 'update' to the part. my bike clearly has the 17mm installed, im going to bring the old one when i pick up the new one to show him it is in fact a different size. Cant wait to see the look on his face. THANKS SO MUCH YO KEN! fingers crossed !! im confident you just helped me fix the bike. dealer says its normal - but if its normal - how come it did not make this noise the first 3k ??? @@Yo-Ken I agree and thanks again man! Via all the other research ive done, the noise does no harm to the engine.. but the left cylinder head timing chain is longer than the right side, and they both use the same tensioner. it makes sense there is more slack on the longer length chain with the same pressure being exerted on it, little mistake on BMW's behalf but nothing is perfect and its still an exceptional overall bike.

Well, I have a 2021 1250 GSA with the same problem and I’m glad my name on here is Soup Dragon! The reason being, I actually personally know the owner of the Motorrad dealership I bought my bike from. The sad thing is, BMW is extremely corporate and knowledge is sometimes only at the level of ‘it’s as much as we (techs) need to know’ in order to carry on with business. The lack of taking customers seriously and telling them “they all do that” is insulting. Having seen this video and being one of the suckers who got told that “it’s normal” I’m going to speak to him, diplomatically, and see what he says about it. I’ll let you know….

What in the f'ing f. I had a 2021 R1250RS that didn't have this tick. Totalled it and bought a used 2020 R1250RS that did. Brought it to my BMW dealer, they observed the same ticking sound in the left cylinder as demonstrated here, recorded audio of it and sent it to BMW NA, who responded "working as designed". I read on a forum somewhere that BMW upgraded the part in fall of 2020 to the longer version. I asked my dealer to install that one instead. They said it would take a day to do, cost over a grand in labor alone, and I'd have to leave my bike there for a week or more. I said I heard it was a relatively simple fix, and they said yes, but they can't just replace just the tensioner if they do it and want to do it under warranty, that they have to replace all kinds of other crap. First I've seen anyone demonstrate the fix. Thanks so much! Man, do I hate my local BMW dealer.

Np... They day I pick it up, It had 200 miles on it. I ask the service department about the noise and he said its normal they all sound like that. The bike I test rode sounded the same as with many others I have heard. Its such a simple upgrade, I don't understand why BMW did not issue a service bulletin. It may not be a issue as far as wear on the cams or chain, but I think it takes away from the rest of the bike, except for the tick... the GS is an exceptional machine.

Hi Yo Ken, I purchased my BMW R1250 GS ADV that arrived in March 2022 and the same bike of a friend arrived to Chile from Germany in September of this year. Both come with the old chain tensioner with a 17mm bolt crown. It is curious that BMW being aware of this issue, submitted a technical note but did not change the part to the engine when it is manufactured, instead of changing it later at the dealers shops at the request of customers. Could be possible that the engineers think that you will have less noise, but more wear on other internal parts in the long run? Why would engineers have designed the chain tensioner of that length and not 7 mm longer? The K5xMU engine was tested for thousands of miles. I imagine that each part of that engine was tested a lot and had several analyses. My concern is that by tightening the chain more with a longer chain tensioner, the noise will end, but this will generate other possible side effects in thousands of miles that we do not know. Sorry for my English. I will appreciate your comments.
@Yo-Ken
@Yo-Ken Жыл бұрын
Martin, no worries your english is perfect. I don't understand the reason for offering a upgraded part but not updating there new models. Unless its a supply chain issue and or the engines have already been built using the shorter tensioner. I am not worried about long term wear issues. If it was an aftermarket component I might have concern, but its a BMW part that supersedes the old tensioner. So far its all been good with 2000 miles on the new tensioner.

May have missed it in the video... At how many miles did you notice the tick? noticed it on mine at about 7K, figure I'll bring it in for warranty, since I'm still good until December.. Assuming you're out of the warranty, is why you paid and did it yourself? or was it one of those things that they said it's not covered? Are there 2 tensioners or just one for the entire train? Thanks for the straight to the point video

Mine had the tick from day one... my GS was a demo... it had 200 miles. Also I am still under warranty, the dealer told me it was not a warranty issue because that's how they sound. I was not worried because if there was a future problem it would be covered. The tick is not a wear issue from the research I have done. Yours may be different because you are just starting to hear it. I am very close to 20,000, and I have had no issues with GS. It's the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned. There are two tensioners, but the left side is the one that ticks. I have heard many different reasons why only the left side had the issue, but from my engine experience the rotation of the chains has a lot to do with how much slack each side has while rotating.

@@Yo-Ken Thanks... yeah I already got some resistance from the dealer when I was making the appointment...started with "did you get your first service here"...........lol They really told you that's normal, so what's with the redesigned / upgraded part... to me, that sounds like admission on a design flaw... and should be covered regardless of mileage... hate these little arguments with the dealer.. will see what they say after their diagnosis. O/T I'm also in an active argument with them re: the forever mushy rear brake, they've bled it twice this year and still resistant to replacing anything under warranty and threw every excuse in the book at me. and forget about the front caliper recall, I honestly liked the Hayes calipers better...brake lever touched the grip on a few occasions and of course "can't find anything" Agree with you that the bike is dependable, just wish the dealerships were at the same level....I feel bad for owners that depend on them to do all their work / maintenance for them (especially my dealer) sorry for the rant

owned Bmw since 03. Listen. There is never anyting wrong with a BMW. They never never admit to it. If you built a relationship with the service manager he will tell you that sometimes when there is a known issue they will not issue an official recal but a SERVICE NOTE to the dealers letting them know that if the suctomer complains in the end they will replace the defective part free of charge as a curtesy....In a corporate world the legal department always insisit to never admit guilt....@@lennykibbs260

Question for you, Does the left piston have to be TDC? I watched tge BMW guy swap out the tensioner but it was an air head. It was also on the top of the engine. He said to put it in TDC. Not sure if this applies to our shift cam engines. . Thanks

I don't know about the air head engines. I did not do top dead center.... I just removed and replaced. I little oil comes out, but its a simple job. There is a little tension when you put the new tensioner in, just make sure it goes in straight, so you don't cross thread.

Late reply, but the left side chain is longer than the right side. Cost savings dictated the same tentioner on both sides, but left side will cause the chain to slack and tick. Hence the longer tensioner only needed on the left side. Either way, BMW said that no damage or issue should occur, other than the annoying sound.
