BMW R1300 GS | Akrapovic Double Barrel Exhaust With DB KILLER REMOVED!

Hey folks, I went ahead and removed the DB killer on our stock double-barrel Akrapovics.
The DB killer is located at the entrance of the muffler and tacked in place by 6 spot welds. It was more of a pain to get it out than I originally thought, but I kept my patience and she eventually came out.
The sound difference isn't life changing, but it is definitely noticeable. It is deeper and has a louder growl. IMO, I think it's worth pulling out and seeing how you like it before going down the servo buddy path.

Took mine out last night after watching your video. Wow you were not kidding about being a pain. A dremel tool is your friend for sure. I do like the sound better. A little deeper like an Akrapovic should sound like. Still waiting for the headers to come out from Akrapovic. Had the full titanium exhaust (no cat) on my 2022 R1250GSA and it sounded great.

Yep, it was a pain. Just needed patience. Not sure why they jam them in there so tight. I too am waiting for a header that looks good and performs.

It's just swapping a silencer in this video, so you don't have to remap for swapping silencers. Useless, unless you swap intakes and headers and even then, the bike will adjust somewhat and it will ride fine, but not optimally.

i have dr jeckill & hyde with cat delete on my gs 1300 and it sounds very great. if you want it quiet , just press the button. i use the loud sound when in the hi-way, to let other cars be aware that there is a motorcycle in the area.

I would never want it quiet and the pipe just looks too big for the bike.

A slight difference when riding. Again, nothing to write home about, it you can tell mostly on deceleration.

Akra was cool before having to conform to Euro regulations (all it used to take was a screwdriver and 30 seconds, tops, to remove the baffles...). Won't buy another Akra system after my experience with my R1250RS. Isn't much louder than factory, and doesn't meet factory dimensions, so my aftermarket luggage is incompatible (of course you can make the opposite argument there but we'll save that for another day). Akrapovic is a waste of money these days, to be honest. Thanks for firing her up without the exhaust, I'm also a child!

I agree. Exhausts suck now but with some modification, the Akras can wake the bike up a bit.

But I don't get it, why pay BMW for Akrap option and tamper with it if you can buy stock and aftermarket can, Akrap for e.g. with removable dB killer. Why to botter with factory option?

Well, I enjoy tinkering with my toys. I hate the sound of the stock sound. I didn't want the Akra in the first place but it came with the bike. Secondly, I already have another exhaust on its way.

No no. I never wanted the exhaust to begin with as I had other ideas, but alas, the bike came with it. It's a great looking exhaust but it's heavy and the sound it makes compared to the stock one does not warrant $1K extra.

Paying BMW 1300 EURO fór the Acrapovic that is 4db lower then BMW stock exhaust 😢 . In my case ordered with stock and replaced by Jeckil and Hyde

I actually ordered a black HP Corse from Italy so I might be selling this one soon, if you want. Not sure it fits the 1250 though. Im sure it fits the header pipe but not sure where the hanger is in relation to the 1300's.

Unfortunately, it does not fit the 1250. I'm sure you can fabricate mounts, but don't think it would be worth the investment and time.

Are these tires the karoo 4 ? Do you have any vibration or noise at 70-80 mph?

Yes they are. I wear ear plugs and listen to music so I don’t hear any road noises from the tires, but yes, they will be noisier than a street tire. Vibrations at those speeds aren’t present. They ride pretty good for what they are.

defo sounds more throaty with Db removed, good job - your bike looks fab too, mines isn't as clean, the roads in Scotland are a mess at the moment, but hey ho it they will get better...

I didn't. But it doesn't make it much louder, but more so deeper. Yes, it's street legal in LA. Everyone has aftermarket exhausts much much louder than this and cops don't care if you're not riding like an idiot.

I’m obviously being an idiot, but I have to ask: removing the tack welds with dremel - do you cut through the DB killer from the inside at each point? Presumably this requires an awful lot of care so as not to cut into the silencer tube itself?

Correct. From the inside, which took forever and so I got annoyed and just drilled through them from the outside with a drill bit. Came out immediately afterewards. Used muffler putty to seal the holes, but even if you leave them open, it won't hurt anything. Nothing a little muffler tape, putty, sealer can't fix. Using the dremel took forever.

Ya, don't waste your time with the dremel. Waste of miy time. Drill and fill is the right way to do it. Even if you don't fill, no harm no foul.

Db killers used to be just to remove with a bolt at the end. Uninstall in 10 seconds. Sad it's more of a job now.

Haha… No DB killer sounds great dude… But when you take that Servo off its gonna sound even better… Not like a straight pipe Harley Davidson annoying loud.. But a nice loud. I took off my centerstand also.. Serves absolutely no purpose lol you have a kickstand… Funny when i took mine off dealer goes na leave on it makes it easier for us to do work on it at service.. i laughed i said ok so make my payments.. He said “Why would i do that” i said same reason id leave centerstand on for you to work on it the 2 times you’ll see my bike at service 🤣🤣

@@revvaddictz I just removed the servo motor and fitted the Healtech ESE-BM1. My gut feel is that the combination of the removed baffle and the open flap, with the Akra double, is greater than the sum of its parts, if you see what I mean. In other words, do both and it finally sounds like it should.
