As a big Honda DCT fan (Africa Twin) I always wondered why nobody else is offering an alternative. Finally the market is catching up and many "this is not riding a motorbike" haters will be shifting automated too ;-) . As long as I can run it on a manual mode, I never understood the critics on their quickshifters. I look forward to seeing the development of these systems. Thanks for the review. I want to give it a try myself.

When I went for the automatic transmission on cars, it was the end for me with the manual gearbox. I think by what you’ve shown here, it might happen with bikes too. I have to try it first, but that’s the feedback I’m getting from this video. It seems to be extra friendly. Probably it is a point of no return. Thanks Scott 👍🏻

I've done heaps of miles with a Honda NM4 (yes) with a fairly early version of DCT - from Estonia to Nordkapp, Alps and most recently Romania. It allows me to focus on the scenery, the twisties, the traffic in large foreign towns, etc.. I recently sold it and picked up an R1250RS and to be fair.. once they release a R1300RS with this version, I'm probably switching to it. I don't really miss shifting gears to be honest. But I also do enjoy it at times (though, all automatics allow an override anyway).

I was a rider until the age of 69 when I lost my left leg due to diabetes. That was devastating knowing I will never ride a motorcycle again due to the fact that without a left articulating ankle I can’t shift. If I were 10 or 15 years younger I would be able to ride a machine like this but at this age of 73 I’m not that excited to further my riding career.

That ASA works fine on normal country roads and drving in the city is really no surprise. so the last 2 minutes of your video were actually the most interesting ones. what happens in slow speed driving under 20 kmh, how can you handle tight corners and hairpin curves where you normally need to the clutch to drive precisely. therefore, looking forward to test it myself here in our curvy Eifel roads.

I test rode a Gold Wing DCT and loved the auto transmission in traffic and relaxed riding. I was surprised that the DCT used the friction zone perfectly for U-turns. Dragging the rear brake controlled the speed easily at walking speed. I would use manual mode in mountain twisties because I did not like the transmission shifting in the middle of corners. When BMW puts this in the RT, I might buy a new bike.

To all Honda lovers, yes its not as smooth as DCT, but its not trying to safe fuel as Honda do, to a point where smoothness of shifting turning to a bike jerkiness due to a high gear and low rpm. BMW ASA dose the the thing on the end of the day, it shifting gears for you. And it for sure will take a slice of Hondas automatic gear box pie.

@@NothingToProve so it’s pretty easy to shift up and down then, as in not much resistance? That’s one of my few complaints on my current 22 model year GSA, every now and then I won’t push up hard enough on the shifter and it’ll get stuck between gears.

You won't have that problem with this, at least I didn't at all. Tomorrow I ride the 1300 GS Adventure ASA, so that will be the second ASA that I ride. What I'd like to feel/see/experience is the same consistent shifting, whether in manual or auto mode.

I have not tried it yet, but i‘m not sure, if that this is the kind of automated transmission i would want. The concept sounds like a normal gearbox, with somebody else controlling the gear shifting. I‘m afraid, that this feels weird in tight corners … I like the DCT of the AT, but with the double clutch the shifting on the AT is pretty smooth. I also have a Rekluse clutch on my dirtbike - but there i just have no clutch lever and decide by myself, when to shift gears. I guess i will have to try it out.

My question to you Scott is if you personally no longer had either of your current BMWs would you buy the automated or the fully (analog) manual? Would you sell your GS & trade your RT? Would you trade your RT for a RT with this system when it comes available? Great video (as always). Love your enthusiasm!

Hmm...good question...thinking....don't know. I ride so many different bikes and 99% of them have a clutch, so for my personal bike to NOT have a clutch is counter intuitive. In fact after riding this bike and getting on my own GS, I almost stalled it when coming to a full stop because I forgot to pull in the clutch, the bike shuttered and then I remembered to pull in the clutch.

Test it at mountain roads. Curvy needle curves in automatic check if the gears are right. DCT sends me with automatic setup in D5 into the curves, so I use only manual + - otherwise too dangerous.

The base AT = 231 then add DCT = 242kg The Base GS = 237 then add ASA = 239.1kg Add Electronic Suspension to the AT = 233kg (cause GS does not come without ES) It's just a numbers thing, my brain automatically goes there...sorry. (it drives my wife crazy) So if you equip both bikes the same and then add Automatic Clutch, the GS is always lighter and lower center of gravity.

@NothingToProve

Been contemplating doing that for the last 2 summers but the nearest Goldwing dealer is about an hour and half ride from me. So been putting it off until I have a free day to ride out and introduce myself and see if they want to work with me or not, if not then it's a wasted day. Here in Germany Honda dealers don't carry Goldwings, they are special, few and far between, kind of like Harley dealers, except Harley dealers, here in Germany, are total snobs, selling an expensive American brand and "if you don't ride a Harley you aint shit" yes I'm quoting the guy from the day when I pulled up on my BMW...lol, I'm on a BMW and he says that to me. WOW! And the kicker is I'm an American (he didn't know that though). But I don't think the Goldwing guys will be like the Harley guys...I hope.

I’ve held a bike license since the age of 17 and used to put a “cranked” clutch lever on the bikes. Now amongst 61 i’m looking towards an easier ride.. Happy days 🤪
