Did you change anything in the carbs after this upgrade?
@20111111jorg9 ай бұрын
On Power, I had an R65 for about 3 years. I ran with others who mostly had R100's but didn't lag behind much as it got up to 110 mph (indicated) very quickly the few times there was a straight road and no police. After that it was a series of R100RS's which I took to top speed a few times but mostly only used the power to pass. I noticed it stumbled right around 100 mph. On having to do a top end I asked to put in dual plugs and a few other mods but nothing which would hurt the engine's reliability. With that I could get it up to 125 very smoothly from it's stumbling to 120 beforehand. Now I have an F800 which is a wonderful performer but seldom bring it above 80 and have never taken it to full speed. None the less it's always satisfying to know your machine is running at it's peak.

Sounds fantastic! The R45 before the upgrade was definitely lacking. The The 800cc kit it certainly behaves just like and moden bike.
@ekspatriat3 күн бұрын
Surely to make the best of it you would also need bigger carbs, a matching head with bigger valves. Without that I'm sure it will be stifled.
@theoldgraywindpassertest3 күн бұрын
Actually no. The kit is matched to the heads so if you change them you get a different squish rate. I didn't change the carbs or even the jets and it seemed to fuel quite well. I thought it would run lean but that wasn't the case. However, you could be quite right but I haven't tried it. They do recommend that the cam is changed but to be honest, the kit made a huge difference anyway so I didn't feel it was necessary 😊😊

You may be interested in a story that illustrates the interchangeability of BMW parts. Many years ago prior to the whole GS craze that started with the R80GS a guy called a Lindsay Urqhart who was the Australian BMW manager built a bike and sidecar racing ace built a trail bike GS largely styled after the BMW ISDT bikes. It looked fabulous but the interesting point was, he used an R100 engine but with an R65 crank and shortened cylinder barrels. This gave about 800cc with a bore and stroke combination not seen on any BMW at the time. I read a review of the machine which was mainly positive. The bike had Maico twin shock suspension and really did look great. Sadly it’s current whereabouts are unknown. Many manufacturers don’t reinvent the wheel with every model. Design engineers use many design solutions across many models and years. Take a look at 70s to 90s gear selector ratchets which were largely the same across both road, trail and mx bikes. Harley Davidson does the same which allowed me to use front brake and suspension parts from bikes as late as 2010 on my 1978 machines, turning old bikes into well braked and safer pieces of equipment. Never sell a BMW is my advice as every time I get back on after a long lay off I am reminded of BMWs slogan from the 70s that read, ‘Sheer riding pleasure’. I have three and love them all.
@theoldgraywindpassertest Жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting story. I'm thinking they must have modified the barrels a little as there wouldn't be enough compression otherwise. The setup must be very similar to what I have now with a 60 kit. I'll be looking that story up. Thank you 😊
@stephensaunders4668 Жыл бұрын
I have a photo of the bike in a scrapbook somewhere in storage but Peter Thoeming aka ‘the Bear’, at times editor and contributor of various Australian motorcycle magazines was aware of the machine and as he told me, once passed on purchase of that machine at an auction. Yes I am sure that the barrel height must have been shortened. At the time I wondered what this must have done to the relation of the pushrod tube alignment. Probably would have to taken height from the head end.

Hi Endo, I tried the R9T too and it's a great bike but I felt that the R45 had something different that a modern bike can't offer which was why I spent the extra to make it into a 860cc and that made it very usable. I am only 5'6 but the man who I bought my R45 off was in fact my ex-boss for 7 years and he used it regally for years. He is 6'2. The R45 and R65 do have a shorter swing arm and seat than the R80 and R100 but exactly the same frame and most of the engine. IMHO I think the R45 is too underpowered to be anything but a short hopper. Lovely but frustrating at the same time. I bought one ready converted and really like riding it - it feels like you're going faster than you actually are! One change I made is to fit an r65 final drive and speedo because like you I found it too revvy on the open road - it's 12% higher and fourth gear is now equivalent to my old fifth. Can I ask you if you find that if you open the throttle in say 4th gear at around 2800rpm it vibrates till 3000rpm and then pulls hard? I don't know if I am bogging it down and this is normal or if it is a tuning issue

Hi Lutz, Great to hear from you. I absolutely love my Siebenrock kit. It makes it very usable. Bear in mind that after the upgrade you may need to find a R100 final drive to keep the RPMs down. The screen I use is the Puig Mini. Here is a link, www.louis-moto.co.uk/en/puig-mini-screen-with-mounting-kit-10006508 The Gold colour is copied from the original. Maybe there is a tiny bit more sparkle but that's very close. Take care. Regards, David

LOL. “Steinbrecken….” Cmon, I know you Brits say things like Toyotra and Mazdar, but Sieben-rock??? That’s easy!

That's why I got the 860cc upgrade kit. Almost unridable without. 😀

As an engineer, I regard your misleading video title as ‘clickbait’. Nothing about the upgrade, just you rambling about motorbiking.

Thanks Lesley. I thought I had clearly mentioned the 860cc upgrade kit I have fitted. I'm just a bloke having fun with some spanners, oil and a bit of wind. 😉 If only I was female and hot, I'd be keenly making money out of this but instead all I get is a little fun. I hope you have fun too. David x

Cheers! :D I happen to like mine though ;) Probably wouldn't without the power upgrade kit tho.

I used to really like my old R45 for short hops. I also ran a Laverda Mirage 1200 at the same time, and that provided the thrills , when I needed them. Nothing wrong with the R45.
