You're welcome- there are also tricks that you can put it in service mode from the drivers seat too. I know how on Ford, Porche, and VW, but not sure on BMW. I'm sure there's a way though.

Thanks Brian! Yep, all of my first time jobs on my 535 is intimidating. However, following each job, it's a huge confidence builder. You are correct, I can do it, especially with the great video that you made which contains your step-by-step narrative, including resetting the electric motor manually. Once again, great video!!! You had covered all of the bases by mentioning the tricks and potential traps. I have to find the torque specs for the caliper bolts as I'm not an arm wrestling champ but I'm working on that too!

I have told people before there is no reason to change brakes sensors because it's nothing but a ground wire. I thought I was the only person who didn't. Great video and great minds think alike.

Hi, Many thanks for going to the trouble of putting this video together with a very good picture and audio, it is very much appreciated. In the end my job was made easier by the fact that BMW on X5 F15 2.0L Diesel S-Drive (Australian model) have relocated the electric motor away from either rear calliper ... I suspect this might be the same for other X5 F15 Models, but I don’t know. The BMW X5 F15 2.0L Diesel S-Drive (Australian model) also use two E-Torx E14 bolts to attach the rear calliper on its mounting bracket. It’s the same on the front too ... and both are single calliper pistons. I can’t recommend it but I had no trouble using my standard 14mm socket to remove them. I’d anticipate as you move up the model range the bigger callipers will use bigger bolts. I also changed the rotors and on this BMW X5 F15 2.0L Diesel S-Drive (Australian model) they use a 5mm Hex to attach the rotor to the axel hub in addition to to the wheel nuts / lugs. Thanks again for posting the video it is very much appreciated. Regards, Matthew

2023 and my Z4 brake indicator light is on. checked the front and had literally brand new barely worn pads. So I need rear pads..sigh. I ordered and replaced the front cause I already bought em from Slamazon, so ordered the rear ones after watching your video. Next project is to change em and I was wondering HTF to do that without the brake scan tool to set it in maintenance mode. THANKS to you I now have the knowledge and can say a giant F.U. to the BMW Dealers $1900 brake job they quoted me.

@6:55 any BMW scann tool "specific" (in general) will perform this. They range from $150 - $250 such as Schwaben, Foxwell (same thing just rebranded) of course the scanner can do many other things other than retracting the e-brake to change brakes. But as noted, yes, for those that dont have the scann tool then this is how you do it. However one thing to note, if your brakes get low enough to trigger the sensor in which you would have to replace it, the brake warning "may not immediately clear" when trying to reset from the Dashboard or even with a scann tool. Sometimes its would clear immediately and sometimes it takes a few miles of driving to cycle for the system to accept the "Reset".

Thanks again for great video footage, I have learned to research before touching these newer autos. i have found a replacement caliper assembly for just under $100, verses a new one at the dealer for almost $845, I will install after my cruise is done.

Thank you, sir! This really helped and saved me about 2k. So I went to the dealership to get the brake light reset, and they said well, it should have changed automatically when you put the new sensor in. But for 80 bucks we can run a diagnostic. According to them, there is no way to reset it🤣🤣🤣 long story short saw a video and pretty much the door has to be closed and the ignition but has to be pushed once. Then you're able to get the rest options to populate. But I was like wow, they're full of crap

To anyone reading this,. doesn't' matter how fancy your car is, the trick is to jack the car on four jacks,. then start the car, put it in neutral then turn off the car. Since the car is lifted, it's not going anywhere, and it makes it so you don't have to decompress the front or rear calipers and will save you a lot of time and hassle- granted that you have 4 jack supports!

No not even using a scan tool (FYI, BMW doesn't even use a scan tool in a sense, its a software on a standard computer that connects to a little box with a OBD2 cable via an ethernet cable or wireless). Official way to do the rear is to wind it back using a 3 pinner. Sounds scary, but it isn't. After exceeding 5km, the rear park brake automatically locates itself to the right position. Do the rear rotors as well, European vehicles use sacrificial rotors.

+briansmobile1 Scotty Kilmer is a bad joke, you can say he isn't but anyone saying "you don't need jack stands, these harbor freight jacks have never failed on me!" shouldn't be giving advice, but he has brought up some valid points about (especially) German cars: Things like the electric water pumps are designed to pretty tight tolerances that fail at very specific points, and supposedly even things like transmissions as well. They're getting closer every day to programmed obsolescence, and why not? A car company much rather sell new models every year than just parts for old models. If you can make all the parts fail at 100,000 miles you basically made your future in sales guaranteed. That is... if you can convince everyone to do the same thing. That's the big issue I think... BMW, Mercedes, GM, you might get them to make a car that can only last 100,000 miles, but then you'll have someone like Kia saying "hey look, our parts last longer and our cars are cheaper!" For this reason I don't know how far planned failure will really go.

@@jetjazz05 Kia and 100k miles shouldn't be in the same sentence AT ALL!!! My Mother-In-Law bought a brand new Soul 5 yrs ago and the engine just threw connecting rod bearings. Mind you she's maintained it like clock work at the Kia dealership and wouldn't even allow me to do oil changes for her. After being TOWED to Kia, the mechanic told her that Kia engines are only engineered to last 100k miles. No thanks! I'll keep our e46's, the one e90 and e70 we have while continuing to do our own standard maintenance which isn't very difficult with all the training videos out there like this one. As for the electric water pumps, yes, they go bad but I've had my e90 for 10yrs now and only had to replace it once which I did myself as well. It's not as bad as people think- a dealership, however, will Break your(My) Wallet if you always take repairs in to them and can't research to do it yourself.

i have a lot of respect for BMW now :) recently (about a week ago) some kids wrecked a BMW 5 series in front of my home. They took a corner at well over 60 mph (nearly 100 kph) The car cornered well and the brakes worked very well. unfortunately the steering and brakes were not enough to out maneuver the parked Toyota Tacoma in front of the house across the street. As it turns out the pilot and his crew of 3 were able to run away from the stolen joy ride and escape into the night. try that with a non German car. :D
