It never ceases to amaze me that most all marques force us to dismantle halve the bike to replace the air filter

Just bought a 2014 R9T today. Battery was weak, so I know I have to replace it. Thank you!!
@tle685 жыл бұрын
You should connect the positive cable first then the negative. Less chance of arcing the screwdriver to ground as you tightened the positive lead if the negative is not connected.

Thank you for your informative video. I have been running a 1984 R100RT for 30 years and it is uber easy to work on etc. I added a 2017 R9T to the garage and then started looking at how to work on it. They do not even give you a manual that shows you fluid amounts for transmission or drive line or where to locate rear drive fill hole! I had to Google it to figure it out. And as for general upkeep work like battery and air filter... SURPRISE! Who was the sadistic engineer who came up with this layout! Nothing is easy. I can see why some people put on pod filters right at the intake of the injectors. And the CAN BUS electrical system is just a mystery to me. I love the bike and how it performs but I have been letting dealer do everything during warranty and probably will continue to do so afterwards as well. I have yet to look to see how or even if one can access battery to jump it if need be given it is buried away.

Fritz, Big mistake... remove the negative terminal first and replace it last!! If your negative is attached and you drop a tool across the positive terminal and ANYTHING METAL on your bike, you will understand and never make that mistake again. The blinding flash will be memorable.

The tank does not have to be completely removed, just unscrew the mounts and raise it by placing some sort of emphasis. There will be much less work and there will be no risk of breaking the hoses and wires.)

I loosen the rear bolt for the tank and then remove the front bolts. Tip the tank back and put a prop under it. Then you can reach under the front to remove the wires and hoses without any danger of the tank falling. Take the prop from underneath, lower the tank and remove the rear bolt. Then lift the tank with both hands. Never any danger of losing the tank.

Thanks for the video! Had to remove tank and replace my battery and fuel quick disconnect. Did you have to map the ecu when you put everything back?
@fritz-the-jovial Жыл бұрын
I did not remap because of the added complexity that will surely lead to additional maintenance, also BMW tunes there motors very well. The aftermarket exhaust header causes it to run slightly lean but still totally acceptable and sounds awesome. A full professional remap with dyno would cost $650. So I will pass on that.

Thanks for the great video! One question. I am having a pain of a time trying to disconnect the diagnostic cables without damaging them. I have a 2015, and that year model has two plugs that go from the wiring harness to the fuel pump. Any tricks to getting these disconnected safely?
@fritz-the-jovial Жыл бұрын
Ehhh. Be very careful not to damage these. Make sure you depress the metal clip completely, and pull on the connector firmly away from its mating body. It should release.

Such an unnecessarily pain in the ass process. It could have been so much easier. BMW engineers must have intentionally worked out a way to make battery and air box maintenance more difficult. Why mount a bunch of decorative crap in the way and make things so complicated when battery and air filter maintenance is so routine?
