BMW used to make cars that evoked emotion in a good way. Now you need a video to convince us to have that emotion. It doesn't work that way. Also, the sketch is a much better direction for where the M models should have gone. We'll just wait till BMW brings in a new designer to see where they can move to from here.

BMW has already permanently lost me as a customer. I've had a multiple E36 M3's, and one of E46 M3, E90 M3, and I currently have an F80 M3CS. By the time they get their design corrected they'll be into heavier hybrid or electric technologies. At this point it's just best to move to Porsche. I will say Adro did a wonderful job of fixing the horrible G80 front, I just can't wait until the G80 becomes the 996 of the M generation and they move back to DCT's and decent looking cars. With that said, I highly doubt I'd purchase another BMW.

Firstly, I appreciate the effort you guys took in responding to the criticism of the recent designs. With that said, I hate to say it but you guys are full of crap. Stop saying that the oversized grills are inspired by older designs. You designed them like that to appease the Chinese market, and then you used design elements from the 30s to justify it. That in itself is not a problem, the problem is the product you came up with is very, very ugly. If you want to make bigger grills to sell more cars in China, why can't you make them like the 3.0 CSL Homage? That concept was GORGEOUS. You didn't because cutting a grill into the bumper in that particular way is more expensive and it would eat up your margins. Also, regarding the angel eyes - that is the biggest load of crap of an excuse I have ever heard. Such an iconic design, part of BMW's identity and basically what you said is "we got rid of it because we can." Then there's the Hofmeister Kink, which I'm not even going to delve into. Finally, it's very easy to justify your mess of a job to a 15 year old (who btw I can already tell is more passionate about BMW than any designer at BMW today). I would LOVE to see you having the same discussion with Frank Stephenson - he made a video called 'BMW X5 designer Picks Apart The NEW 4 Series!' But you won't do that because you know you can't justify the unjustifiable.

I agree. The long vertical grille only works well with the shape of the ones from the 30’s. This the 21st century, the shapes have evolved to something different. You can’t just suddenly plant an feature from 90 years ago without thinking if it fits the generation or not, since the shapes have changed a lot.

@Corziller Rexfranor Something also tells me, the previous generations of BMW's are relating the appearances of each series with one another to look like one big family. This generation is starting to separate each model on their looks and characteristics way too much, which loses connection between one another.

Ever since this guy did this to the grill, I have not thought about getting another BMW. Audi is the best now, always thought they had great design. Why is everybody blaming the ugly design on Chinese market preferences? As a Chinese, most Chinese people I know also hate the big grill design, and the latest 5 series also just blew our minds. The BMW sales in China, especially 4 series and the new 5 series, have been at a historical low. So I am really surprised to see people commenting this ugly design is to please the Chinese market. If this is true, then I would say the design team does a terrible job fulfilling this goal.

We understand that China now is your biggest market, BUT don't loose the rest of the world because of some Chinese pleasing ideas. The fact that you have to make such a video to respond to the criticism of your cars' designs PROVES that your designs are a failure. You don't need to make up such words and story to explain design. Design speaks for itself. The unnecessarily huge grills are so bad that you even had to justify it by pulling out designs from the 1930's, which was when the grill design flowed with the rest of the car which doesn't translate to the design of your recent cars. It's just a huge grill for grill's sake slapped on a car which completely speaks a different design language. The lines and surfaces on the front, side and rear all speak a different language. It's as though they were all designed by different people. There is no uniformity within and each angle makes them look as though they're totally different cars. Overall, your recent designs are messy, unrefined, vulgar and unprovoking. As a former BMW fan, I hope to see this trend changes soon.

Dukec trying to convince a 14-year old why his choices have been abysmal sinds 2019. Sad sight, really. Also sad is when you have to act like the E36 was initially found to be hideous (it wasn't) yet has proven to be gorgeous. (it hasn't) Those 60's BMW are cool but nobody refers to them, except for the 2002. Where did BMW really find its groove, design-wise? E30, E39, E46, Z4, Z8, most modern 3er and 5er with the previous 2 series as a pinnacle that could rival the E46 CSL. A design chief that has to defend himself rather then letting the design speak should be on his way out. Dukec talks a big game about design making the audience 'feel' something - and that is exactly what they should be doing. However, this is not modern art, where disgust could be seen as a desirable result. This is a proposition where the only emotion you should be trying to evoke is positive enough to spend 100.000 Euro on a car.

None, absolutely none of the large kidneys on BMW’s of old, took over the design of the front fascia. The kidneys on the older models were integrated perfectly, they weren’t the primary focal point to design the rest of the car around. I’ve watched storied designer after designer state that bmw has lost the plot, and isn’t following any design perspectives that are tried and true, that creates a seemless vehicle, back to front. I’ll buy an older model, instead of a newer one. Not even something I have to think about.

Kinda easy shot to say "it is change, maybe you don't like the change but people will like it in time etc" but yeah nah... there have been plenty of cars in the past that were ugly when released but a few years later it grows on you but it's about proportions here. old BMWs had "large" grilles but they didn't look oversized for the car, in some even the kidney is the only grille so it's not surprise they are tall to cool more components with a single grille but the new grilles take up too much of the front and feel like they are sized up for the sake of it especially when half of the grille is blanked off anyway.

I wonder why brands must make such drastic changes to their designs as time goes on. Why change something if it looks good already? And to add on to that, electric cars are generally considered more efficient and less costly when compared to ICE vehicles. Couldn't brands then take more liberties when designing their cars, since aerodynamic fuel efficiency isn't such a big factor anymore? Maybe something less egg shaped.

Maybe instead of looking at history to justify why the team is releasing ugly cars, like the 1st bmws (yes the models with disproportionate large grills were also ugly, that's one of the reasons why later bmws are more sought after), maybe try and look at the best looking cars bmw has made during it's history like the 507, E9 3.0 csl, 635 csi, E39 M5, i8, M2, F13 M6 etc....and try to understand the fundamentals of why they're considered by enthusiasts even after 80+ years, like in the 507 case, a masterpiece and also why they're getting so valuable. Coincidence? Don't think so...

I've grown with BMWs. My late dad had only Beemers from '70s. Last his car was E39 18 years. I still have in my garage E36 coupe and Z3. Now daily drivers are Hyundai Ionic electric and Mazda CX-5. They are beautiful to look at. And quality is great. You lost me as customer, BMW.

How is design innovation means copying other manufacturer design? like the iX the rear end is similar with the chinese car wuling almaz. Where's the bmw i was familiar with? the distinctive design and wide fender? those days are gone now. Ok i know your design team consisted of many enthusiast but what about the feeling of enthusiast out there? Do you guys really consider us while designing the car or not.

At 14:29 you can see, who may be responsible for the huge ugly foreign body diffuser block on the back of the 2024 M5 (at least partial, because this car looks also like a incoherent draft from many designers, who didn't spoke together to align their "work". Very unfortunate (and in those last BMW design cases it is not, because our eyes haven't gotten used to it yet). A design generation, most existing BMW customer can't live with and will move towards other competitors. And the sales numbers from China does not proof, that they like this designs ether (see the weak iX sales there). This design crew should move to Chinese car vendors to protect BMW, otherwise we'll lose this beloved brand quickly.

errr ugly means ugly, explaining design process, don't correct ugliness. Even Chinese contacts think designs are ugly (don't "blame" the Chinese market for self created ugly big grills, pls). Having a big ugly grill and not a nice big grill, is still 100% ugly...very simple. Not buying new BMW cars anytime soon, shake head. Hope they survive impending global recession.

Was hat Zeno gemacht?
