Is the BMW S1000XR Triple Black the best sports touring motorcycle? I go for a ride and review the S1000XR to see if it could be the best sports tourer on the market. With the inline 4 cylinder engine from the S1000RR it is so much more than just an ordinary sports tourer!
With pure racing DNA at its heart the S1000XR is definitely on the sportier side. A very fast and capable touring bike.

getting the word Wuss, after riding sports bikes for 30 years this is the perfect pensioner bike if you can`t cope with high footpegs, wrist ache and back pain but you still want to show up boy racers that cant ride , what a perfect machine for us 58 legends , 64 with a bike that can own 25 year olds in comfort, whats not to like, thank you BMW, oh and you can tour on it for weeks with no discomfort

Very fair appraisal, I have a 22 M Sport and have owned a GS and 3 Gses, the GS is is probably the best all round motorcycle ever built but it does'nt make me feel like the XR does. Below 5000 rpm I find it quite a relaxed ride and spent 2 weeks in Spain on it, I found it a comfortable tourer. Over 5000 though, the growl from the intake, the smoothest quick shifter i've ever used and the aggressive pull from the motor is the most addictive feeling i've ever had on a bike

The extraordinary capabilities of this bike is that after getting hot enough which happens very quickly, the bike is a doll to handle in every condition, in every type of road. It gives everything that you demand from it with no hesitation or complaints…it’s comfortable and turns you into a much better rider than what in reality you are. Of course that out there, you can find bikes that you may find easier to handle in general, but here, the thing is that this is not a bike that you can ride it ignoring the machine. You’re obligated to respect the machine that this bike is. Nothing else. If you give it the deserved respect she will behave as the bike of your dreams. With great liberty comes big responsibility. And if that’s your state of mind, so the BMW S 1000 XR is the perfect bike. One of a kind 👌🏻

I get the feeling you quite like it!! 👍 It is an amazing machine, too be honest I found it a bit too bonkers for UK roads. I prefer the delivery of a slightly lazier/torque engine. Can see this bike coming into its own on a track or faster/smoother roads.

@@redangrevival thanks for replying. I see what you’re saying, besides the fact of the actual bike electronics adjustments turned the savage nature of it into a very civilized piece of machinery, it will always be asking you to take the fast lane or a more sporty ride…it’s like some pets. Some dogs or some horses will demand from their owners specific living conditions and if you don’t provide that, they can ruin your life just because you’re doing that same mistake with them. So, it isn’t a total story of having fun. To own a bike like this, requires some “work” from you. And that’s why I said in my comment “ with great liberty, comes big responsibility”. These type of machine makes sense to me, because I’m 57 years old and the passion for bikes has been there since I can remember my self of existing and I feel this is the right time to have it (at the last part of a long extent of time experience with every kind of similar and other different bikes). Although, I still keep my T120 for shorter and relaxed weekend rides😉 Be well and thanks for joyful content ✌️

If not obsessed with peak horsepower and the thrill of the occassional blast up the rev range there are better sport/tour options even in the BMW catalog. The F900XR while seemingly massively down on power surprises in its all around competence and enjoyment. I moved from a K1300 (amazing power as well) to the F900XR and other than the top end thrill, the lighter, more agile twin seems a better solution for me. I ride the twisties as fast and in some cases faster than my buddies on their 4 cylinder machines. But some folks love multies and some love twins. Thank goodness we have such nice choices!

Same I think this bike was a little too much for me to be honest! Just not relaxing enough. This is also one of the more "manic" 4 cylinders in the segment. For touring and everyday riding I would take a twin, use that nice low down torque to its max 👍 Cheers

@Sisu2280 Жыл бұрын
No. I know you won't understand, but if you have ridden big power bikes for 20+ years, like super sport bikes, anything without the power of a 1000... How best to explain it.... It's like a watered down beer. It's still beer, but it's not good enough. Seriously, once you're comfortable on a big bike, twisting the throttle on a 600-900 etc, it's just a bit underwhelming. And you don't have to be doing 200+, even up to 100 the power is just more enjoyable. As you say, good options everywhere, but some of us can't go less power. It's just a bit like what my grandma would ride.
@sunrisejak2709
@sunrisejak2709 Жыл бұрын
@Ryan Inc I get your point. But after 50 years of riding I can smoke most riders on much less power by using the power band effectively of a modestly powered bike. The large percentage of riders who ride high horsepower high RPM bikes rarely ride them at or anywhere near their peak horsepower RPM. Frankly it scares them. The vast majority short shift and rely on capacity to get drive. Riding my older boxer twin I had guys on GSXRs that I would drop and leave in the rear view mirror. A fast guy on an average bike will be much faster than an average guy on a fast bike. Sadly, very few people can reasonably exploit the power of the big superbikes. They are a thrill for most in a straigh line but overall riding conditions including tight twisty stuff they can be awkward and clumsy for folks who are incapable of putting the 180+ hp to the ground. The massive power on the top end can (and does) catch people out. 100 usable, friendly, tractable horsepower is easier to leverage than 180 hp that manifests itself at 12-15,000 RPM as opposed to a lower revving bike at 6-8,000 RPMs. In the groups I ride with I'm at the front and challenging buddies who are on bikes with 50-70% more power. Honestly it's fun embarrassing them. Especially when I'm 70yrs old on a middleweight and they're 35 yrs old using their big horsepower heavyweights to make them manly. For my "fun bike" I have a 1989 Suzuki RGV 250cc 2 stroke (60 hp) that also embarrasses the guys on the Ducati club rides up in the hills. Big and powerful is overrated.
@Sisu2280
@Sisu2280 Жыл бұрын
@@sunrisejak2709 I think at 70 that's a very reasonable! And agree, a lot of younger, or not even younger, but inexperienced riders, think that power = speed. But there is the middle ground, guys not yet quite 70, experienced, who can get the most, maybe not all, out of the big bikes. Not even Rossi on a smaller bike will come close. But I think you're right - for a lot, the 600-900 range is more than enough.

@Ryan Inc I think we're both passionate about our motorcycling and that's what matters most! 😁One worrying statistic though is that more veteran US military returning from Iraq and Afghanistan were being killed from motorcycle accidents than in the line of duty. This prompted the US government to enact motorcycle safety training as returning vets would buy hyperbikes and such and sadly kill themselves. 🥺 That's scary and terrible situation. 😬 A different kind of missle! But I love riding and will continue until someone has to lift me on and off the damn thing! 😂 Ok, ok, To be honest I do miss (sometimes)the 165hp of the K1300. 😉 So just a friendly exchange among two guys who love 2 wheels. Valentino Rossi,,, there'll never be another like him. MotoGP is not the same anymore. 😢 But that's another discussion. 😊 Cheers,

I loved the transition from 'Holy Cr*p this is phenomenal' to 'Wait there's an annoying rattle'. In my opinion the latter is a singular redeeming characteristic. The teutonic moulded 'Vorsprung Durch Technik' Über machine excels to propel the rider with supreme efficiency. I want a bike with faults and flaws, and that elusive but endearing 'character'. Arranging, real time, the purchase of the REborn Classis 350, with the dealer, as I'm watching this great review of the Das Raumschiff Enterprise.

The difference in vibration between a four cylinder bike and a V-Twin or parallel twin with a 270 degree crank like your Speedmaster is the frequency. Four cylinders have a higher frequency which numbs the extremities.

After doing some research, I stumbled upon the Ninja 1000sx, sport tourer, inline four, panniers. I read in several comparisons on Austrian and Italian sites that it was a more useable sport tourer than the XR, had one for a couple of hours and was smitten. You raised some good points there. The eye watering price aside, it's a lot of power you probably can't use, presumably the mpg will be fairly high, there's an awful lot of tech to go wrong and be distracting, and my personal opinion, I don't like screens that can obscure your view and that amount of power can cause people to ride aggressively and become impatient. On a more positive note, BMWs are thoughtfully and professionally made. I also like the way you can have different seat heights on them. For mostly motorway driving, this could be fun.

I think this type of bike works better in North America where the roads are open and wide and generally in pretty good condition. This is not really a bike for blatting around the narrow country lanes in the UK . . .too manic.

I completely agree and very well said 👍 Can imagine it being amazing fun on big smooth roads. But yes definitely too bonkers for our bumpy small roads!

@@redangrevival - quite interesting that MotoJitsu who lives in San Diego recently gave it top marks . . . but again wide good condition roads

@@Jagshemasher Yup I have seen a lot of his reviews recently, seems to give lots of bikes good marks! But yes on those roads, it would be great. Much better than kin the UK haha

Like most modern hi-po bikes. Amazing. Utterly pointless. You couldn't rag an RGV 250 anywhere in Eu bar autobahns these days without losing your license or jail. Happy with a v slow RK.

The answer to your question ("Is the BMW S1000XR Triple Black the best sports touring motorcycle?") is: No! You'll need to get it in any other colour instead of that ugly Triple Black and then it's a YES! 😁😉

It might be fair to say it's a sports bike for tall riders? BMWs have issues with vibes. Rode a 2019 S1000R a few years ago and that really suffered from vibes through the pegs and bars. I had to get off after 15 mins and then took it back to the dealer. Such a shame as loved the look of it and what it promised. Wish BMW would sort their vibey bikes out. Maybe they need to fit balancer shafts to their S1000 engine like Honda and other Jap bike manufacturers do with their big cc bikes?

Yup that describes it well (sports bike on stilts!) Yes this is the first time I have experienced the problem vibes. I am sure it is different for everyone, but I definitely noticed them. Yes I suppose that could work, but surely BMW have thought of that already! It is true thought the Japanese inline 4 bikes do not suffer from vibes. Apparently this new 2021 model is better than the previous.
