I had a 2016 S1000XR. My absolute favorite bike. I traded for a 2020 R1250GSA because I need my drivers license. The XR is an absolute blast. I did multiple 400 miles + day trips without any problems. Wish I had Diplomatic immunity and no worries about loosing my license.

Some comments to your thorough review :) 1) I have it 2020 MY and front blinkers are full modern LED (EU version) 2) M endurance chain is supposed to be maintenance free not higher mileage (anyway somewhere about 20-25kkm will have to replace) 3) seat is indeed quite hard so if you are a tall rider I recommend to change to comfort seat (860mm vs 840mm standard) and you get extra 20 mm of foam that makes a significant difference (I did compare both in real life riding)

I have the S1000R Sport 2022 model which has the identical engine and all the same electronics on it , as it is 199 kgs wet some 27 kgs lighter than the S1000XR with the same engine performance it is exhilarating to ride. Dynamic Pro mode allows you to adjust all settings to your personal needs whilst at the the same time allowing the exhaust valve to open to produce pops'n'crackles downshifting which brings a smile to my face every time. Both the S1000R and S1000XR are excellent bikes.

I randomly jumped on a demo with one of these at Americade this year when the bike I wanted to ride wasn't available. This isn't the kind of bike I usually gravitate toward, but I was blown away TBH. One of the best bikes I have ever demoed and certainly the most fun for twisty road riding with basically the perfect blend of comfort, performance, and handling. Really a top-notch machine.

Glorious - I have that exact same bike with the M Package. I just bought it a few weeks ago, with all the luggage (top case, side cases). I fitted an MRA windscreen, SW-Motech Pro Tank Bag and M Sport foot controls also. This bike is the best bike I have ever riden or owned - it is an awesome, exhilarating machine. Smooth and planted, It absolutely rips around the corners and is highly predictable - does exactly what you want it to do. Oddly, one of the main reasons I like this bike in terms of comfort, is the seat. I think it is super comfortable and supportive, despite its firmness.

As another one of your viewers pointed out, I also watched Cuban Rider absolutely fly on one of these a few years back, both in the twisty mountain roads and on the race track. Its all the sport bike I'd ever need and dreamed of having one for some time. Obviously you need the skills and the respect to ride this monster but how sweet is that motor.... so nice!

Another great review. When i was shopping for a new bike and went to my region BMW dealer, i was looking for a XR at the time. I had a V-Strom 1000 at the time and was looking for a more sport touring bike. However, the dealer conviced me on a R 1200 GS Rally. I don't regret the decision, because for my use, the GS really is a "do it all" bike. It's not great in every thing, but it is very good for most of it. Also, here in Brazil the GS hold's a better market value, should i consider to sell it. But the XR still is a consumer desire for me. I like de videos of the Cuban Rider, who has and early XR and really exercise the qualities of the bike. Thank's for the review, i enjoy it! 😉👍👍👍

I have the 2019 model, i bought it new in may 2020. Yesterday i got it back from the dealer after it's 60 000 kms service. I got a GS for the two days and was so happy to get back on my XR. For pure road use, even big miles, it is a so much better bike (for me). It is like the Porsche 911, a sports bike fit for everyday use. (The GS being the Land Rover Defender in this comparison)

It is good to see you having so much fun Ian. I have no great love for BMWs, but that is a superb bike that I wouldn't mind owning. Very nice and a great review. Thanks. Some other bikes of this ilk might be good too as, whilst I am more dirt orientated, where I currently live, it would be both rare and difficult to find anything that is not asphalt. That 1200 Triumph was a peach too.

I was returning from Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia after going to MotoGP. Good old Google Maps took me off the the main road near Tamworth, NSW. I was travelling back to Queensland. Ended up on a dirt road on my fully loaded, K1300S. Fractured a brand new rear tyre and had to fill up air at petrol stations all the way back to Tamworth and buy, yet again a new rear tyre. The joys of motorcycle :)

The "comfort" part of the equation of the XR is the riding position. The foot pegs are straight down, the handlebar is wide and positioned as on a standard street bike. You are sitting nearly upright, not leaning forward with half your weight on your wrists. My personal issue is I'm 6'4", I need a higher windshield and a better seat for long term riding. After finishing a 150 mile ride yesterday, my butt was most uncomfortable. I took a couple of short breaks during the ride, but I'm getting a different saddle ASAP. Other than that, I absolutely love this bike. I find myself laughing and whooping out loud as I ride because it's simply exhilarating. The straight line acceleration is amazing and the way you can flip it through the curves is awesome. I've been riding bikes since I was 14 and I'll be 75 in a couple of weeks, I've had everything but a Ducati and this is the most fun I've ever had, period..... My next bike will be the 2024 M1000XR if I live that long. (I would like to ride a Multistrada Pikes Peak, but $35K+, I don't think so)

The XR and GS are very different bikes. The XR is not meant as an off road motorcycle. The XR is 80% sports and 20% tourer. If you want to ride in comfort all day long with the better half on the back then the GS is your bike. If you want performance and the thrill of those challenging twisters (and you don't value your licence too much) then the XR.

@C_R_O_M________
@C_R_O_M________ Жыл бұрын
There’s nothing about this bike that justifies “off-roading”. Not the character of the engine, the transmission, the suspension, nothing. I’ve ridden a previous model and it’s just a tall sport bike with tremendous brakes and excellent performance. The engine is screaming like a 1000cc sport bike at high rpm’s and that’s exactly the rpm range that this bike is happy. That makes it more of a track bike than anything else. For sport touring you need something like a torque monster (Hayabusa, ZX14, GTR1400, FJR1300, etc) that allows you to ride in one-two lower gears than optimal and still cruise around, for off-roading you need something like a T7 or AT, KTM 790, etc with off-road suspension, 2 cylinders for better traction, and relatively lightweight to manhandle it when the path becomes more sketchy. The XR is none of that.

I have an S1000R and test rode the XR at a BMW Demo Day. You are correct that the best part of the rev range takes you way over the speed limit and the bike makes you want to ride fast. The bike is relatively tame below 7000 RPM, which makes it accessible. I don't recommend the XR as a long-range tourer because only a small percentage of tour riding occurs at 100 mph plus. Also, comfort matters more than top-notch performance when touring. If you never ride offroad this is a top-notch do-everything road bike. Another great review! Thank you!

My preformed great for a very long tour (12k miles around the U.S.) It is not great on gas mileage, but I never had to break into my backup fuel during the trip. A shaft drive would be better for touring. For actual touring, I used cruise control 90% of the time. For anything remotely twisty, I really had to hope I did not lose my license. 😀

I have done tours with CBR1000f , Hayabusa , Bmw Rs1200 and by far the S1000xr is the best tourer and sportiest I have ridden . Only changes I had done to bike is the seat which I had redone in memory foam . My longest day was through Finland over 800 km in a 10 hr period and we were both fine the next day 🤪

Hi Ian, love your honest in-depth reviews even on bikes which are not built for me. At the age of 67 I‘m looking for something lighter after 3 GSes. I‘ve already tested the Aprilia Tuareg 660 on a weekend ride and it’s soo easy to handle which I liked. But I didn’t try the drop test (I wasn’t the owner). KZbin Testers complain a lot about the engine‘s heat - it bothered me not too much, honestly. Do you intend to ride and test this bike someday?? Best regards, Peter 🇦🇹

For sport touring you need something like a torque monster (Hayabusa, ZX14, GTR1400, FJR1300, etc) that allows you to ride in one-two lower gears than optimal and still cruise around, for off-roading you need something like a T7 or AT, KTM 790, etc with off-road suspension, 2 or (even better) 1 cylinders for better traction, and relatively lightweight to manhandle it when the path becomes more sketchy. The XR is none of that

Great review... I sold my 1050 vSTROM and bought the XR for all the reasons that its an entertaining ride. I sometimes think I should have kept the vStrom for those days when you don't want to risk shredding the license. The problem is the adrenalin addiction that comes with the XR, it is as you said very easy to ride fast. I recently bought a Tuono V4 1100 Factory to try and satisfy my new addiction. I am now conflicted as to which bike to ride. The XR is comfortable and easy, the Tuono has a sublime soundtrack and is also a lot of fun (just a little more crazy). I also have an older GS... it sits under the cover, not sure when I will ride it again. If I could only have one bike, I would struggle with the decision but it would probably be the XR.. Conflicted is me!

Same problem. Once you ride something like a Hayabusa, with a 1340cc engine, all you want is that engine. Every other engine feels like crap after that. I think Suzuki should put the 1340cc (relatively long stroke engine) of the Hayabusa into an ADV bike. Who cares if it's too much power. Customers would buy it, because it would be very reliable, and there are tons of parts, TONS of parts available, which is perfect for ADV riders. OR HOW ABOUT, they cut the Hayabusa engine in half, and make it a 670cc paralell twin with 90hp and 57 ft lbs of torque. Use the same pistons, and titanium valves, and clutch, so people can buy Hayabusa parts for their engine, if they break something. I feel like these companies have no idea how to sell motorcycles, I could do a better job marketing Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha. They seem to have no idea what customers actually want.

As a previous owner of a gen 1 XR, that got moved on quite quickly when I realised I had numb hands, feet, and backside, I’m hoping this is significantly better. It’s a much better looking bike, especially in red, and many of the gripes from the old bike are fixed (ugly LCD dash, no tyre pressure control, ugly pannier mounts, strange headlight design). One glaring omission I think may have not been picked up in your review is the side stand. It’s ridiculously short so makes the bike lean over far more than necessary, counteracting the lighter weight and making it a pain to get off the side stand. I guess having the bike too upright on the stand is worse and I believe it’s possible to buy a puck to lift the foot of the stand up, but considering how polished the the rest of the bike is, it seems odd. And, finally, well done to BMW for including full options on both the standard and lowered suspension models (so ESA and a centre stand) - something the tend not to do on their other models.

This is more of a tall sportbike like a Multistrada Pikes Peak, instead of the V4S. Maybe BMW is missing a trick by not making a GS version of this platform for riders who spend most of their time on tarmac while still wanting to go on dirt and light sand trails.

If the rumors are true we’re in for a treat from BMW. There are, allegedly, two version of the new GS(A) coming. One more road focused and the other more off-road focused. They should come in 1400cc and 1300cc respectively. I can see them having similar options to the new Tiger 1200. And they are, again allegedly, coming with an automatic/semi-automatic option similar to Honda’s DCT transmission. I never had a BMW, but I’m excited for what’s coming. The bar (and unfortunately the entry price) on the Big ADV market is getting really high.

Great in-depth review. I’ve put nearly 12,000 miles on my 2021 XR M Sport model and everything you said is spot on. I also owned a GS for 2 years and that bike was great but the XR is thrilling to ride and is the best of the dozen or so motorcycles I’ve owned over the years. I would say my MPG has improved over time, pretty much average 45 mpg every ride unless you’re in stop and go traffic which this bike can do just fine, clutch is vey light but engine can get pretty hot on warm days. If you’re purely a street/touring rider you’ll never get bored with this motorcycle!

Very good and balanced review. At 59 yrs old I was looking for a new bike that would "check most of the boxes". My last inline 4 was 25 years ago and I have been on mostly v-twins since then. I looked / test rode the RT, GS and the XR in addition to the Ducati Multi V4. For the way i ride the XR just seemed more comfortable to me. I saw somewhere in the comments something about a lack of aftermarket.....really? Pretty much everything that can fit the RR or R will fit this bike.

I had a R1250GS, was tempted by the XR, came across the Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx and I love it, such a smooth and yet torquey in-line four. Have read several compairisons that, ergonomics aside (it‘s more front-end orientated than the upright position on the XR) rate the Kawasaki‘s engine higher as it‘s smoother and has a fuller mid-range. Having said that, I haven‘t had the chance to ride the XR, which Iooks I really like. Cheers

Only ONE thing I want ppl to be aware of, that you & BMW missed/forgot? If the switches were BACKLIT, that would have been "X"tremely awesome, because the XR is so much FUN, the "adventure" may not end at dusk🥰. Very accurate review. Thank you for doing such a good job for us(he even went off road, ya'll 👍🏽). I own a 2023(since Father's Day, '23), and I can tell you, this review is spot on! Couldn't agree more! I think the Tiger 1200 is the bike 95% of us would actually need. It is significantly more comfortable, has an excellent amount of power. In comparison however the S1000XR is an absolute maniac. I test rode this in downtown Chicago and accidentally pulled the tire off the ground in 2nd gear. However, if you live around rough roads, the S1000XR is a fairly rough ride and firm suspension. The seat for me was a deal breaker, even an aftermarket seat isn't fixing that shape/design. It really cut into my legs. Excellent video! Thank you!

a billion years ago, I switched bikes on a long day tripper ride with my buddy who had a 88 GSXR-1100r (I had an hopped up 84' Kaw GPz 750). After twisting the throttle wide open a bunch of times, I came to a decision that I could never own a bike that accelerated so well, where you are essentially teleporting ahead up the road in an instant. I'd lose my license very quickly as I could not stop myself from constantly twisting the throttle wide open and into warp speed mode - as much as I'd absolutely love to ride a bike like this, I know that I cannot allow myself the temptation......Looks like you were subsumed by the wonderfulness of insane power - cheers!

Great review. My only suggestion would be some input around travelling on this bike. Does it have pannier options and would they destroy how it cuts through the wind? I currently have a '17 R1200RS and might be looking for something with a bit more spice and more upright - but it needs to carry gear for multi day trips. I have had a few GS's and don't want to go back there necessarily (I have a 790R for gravel touring). So info on how it can carry a bit of luggage would have helped me. Keep up the good work.
@Chzydawg
@Chzydawg Жыл бұрын
You can get colour and key matched bmw panniers and top box, bit pricey but y’know “bmw”. I have the triple black 22’ XR, the panniers don’t do a lot to slow it down, obviously they stick out a little bit but they are somewhat aerodynamic. I recently did a 200KM trip fully loaded panniers and top box and to be honest, if you’re used to the XR’s weight an extra 20-30kg doesn’t really make a huge difference. The only thing I don’t like about the current model is that it needs quite a bit of work to really get the power out of it (full system, ecu flash, tune, etc.). Don’t get me wrong the power is there but, you can’t really get to it during normal road riding. The power only really comes in at around 8-9000 rpm, before it’s a bit lethargic. I had the 16 XR too, and that one used to just power wheelie almost every gear, the new one doesn’t. With this one you occasionally get a little lift around 10000rpm in 3rd, but that’s about it. That could be because of euro exhaust regs. Full system is on the cards for me soon, will have to see if that does much.

I just finished a test ride of the 2023 model a few days ago. I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam and could not flat foot the bike with standard suspension. However, I could flat foot the low suspension model. Notes from my test ride (in road mode): This bike packs plenty of power! Rolling on the throttle at 5-6,000 RPM just about snaps your neck! The quick shifter was buttery smooth both up and down. The handle bars buzz/vibrate more than other BMWs I have ridden or owned. Could be an issue on longer trips. The engine throws off noticeably more heat than my BMW K1200GT (also a 4 cylinder). The small windscreen did a good job of keeping most of the wind off of me.

Did you find that you had to twist the throttle a lot more than what you would normally expect to get the anticipated throttle response? I test rode a 2021 model that this was a big issue for me. I heard that a tune can probably fix this.
