Great video! I had an R1200S and rode the daylights out of it. It was rugged as hell. I once got run off the road by an F250 that ran wide into my lane on a left handed sweeper. I lost it in the gravel and went down a ditch, screamed like a teenage girl at a Beatles concert, went airborne and landed in a just plowed farm field at about 60mph, I stood on the pegs, moto-crossed and rode it out Paris Dakar style. I, by some Devine intervention, did not go down and there was no damage other than to my underwear. Great bikes these. Apparently, when they do break, they break big.

I wish that I would have seen this video before I purchased a 03 Boxer Cup. I got a great deal on it, but of course it had been in a wreck. After checking everything out I found out that the steering lock on the front frame was broken. I ended up having to replace the front frame . Fortunately I found a perfect condition used one. However changing one was a involved job to say the least. It also needed a mirror (70.00) and valve cover (700.00). Finding used parts can be difficult and expensive. While the bike is back together I’m still looking for a headlight assembly (used 350.00 new 750.00) The bike is beautiful and fun to ride, but check it good before buying.

Hi Chris, I watch often your videos on Bmw’s services and "things to know" and I particularly appreciated the last series on the BMW R1100S, that I own and I personally really like. Me and my father are some Bmw fan’s and we own some bikes (R69 , R80G/S PD, R1100S) and also with your videos we learned a lot on our bikes stories. Some days ago they offer to sell to me a BMW R1150 GS 2002 that had an accident some months ago. From a Bmw workshop they listed: -Windshield, turn signals, handlebars, right pannier, rear subframe , brake and clutch levers that are dented but not broken for a total of 6300€ with manual work included. I was tempted to buy it for a low price to do the work myself but I’m concerned about what to look and inspect to be sure that the frame and other vital parts are still good. Do you have in mind to do a video about it or something similar to what you’ve done for the R1110S? Can you help me with just some things to check that maybe you know to be fragile or sensitive to crashes? Thanks a lot for you time and I hope You can teach me something more.

I was gonna buy a 00 R1100S and read about the spline problem. I couldn't get past the thought of paying what the bike was worth and on the way home with it from TN. to Alabama have the spline issue and have to put a bunch more money in the bike. Beautiful bike Pacific Blue, looked well taken care of. Just couldn't pull the trigger. I love to ride. Just got home off a 37 day out west trip and 8162 miles. No issues other than having to come back home. Enjoyed the video Chris.

Very interesting S-Story, thx a lot! What about some GS-Videos? 😬 Greetings from Darmstadt
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris Жыл бұрын
Yes, the GS will come at some point too, thanks for your suggestion. All this takes time and money and I've never enough of either. It's a slow process this video work. Average of one hour spent editing for every one minute that you view. A 20 minute videos take 20 to 30 hours to produce. The S series has over 80 hours invested at this point (part 6). I've earned about $5 per hour to produce this video series about the S. The GS series would certainly be longer than the S due to the multitude of GS models made since 1980. Chris

Thanks again Chris. I know more about my R1100s than I did 23 minutes ago. But what's that at 4:03? A welded aluminium airbox and at least one pipe that looks extra to me. What is it?

Great video. How much of this crash fragility concern applies to the R1100R? Sounds like most of the front end weaknesses are the same?
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris Жыл бұрын
The S is fragile compared to the earlier 1100 RS, R, RT and GS. That stronger rear frame creates a lot of crash stress on the front of the bike due to the rigidity of the rear. The earlier models are in no way as susceptible to the engine case cracking open as the S model is. However, a crash evaluation for any of these models should be thorough and would likely require some sort of disassembly but the earlier models were less prone to catastrophic damage. Thanks, Chris

Are all the engines the same on the R1100 series? R1100R, R11100RS, R1100LT, R1100GS, accept the gearing of the gearbox. i mean the block is interchangeable?

Thanks so much for posting all these helpful videos Chris! You've helped me so much with my R1100S. I have a question for you, my bike has low miles, I'm the second owner, the original owner was a professor at MMI, the bike is pristine. So why am I having such a hard time selling it? Do these bikes have a bad rap or something?

Love your series, Chris. What do you think about BMW no longer publishing service manuals for newer bikes (k1600)
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris Жыл бұрын
Criminal. Did you know that BMW was the leader in the effort to prevent the general public and independent mechanics from having access to BMW's service bulletins. Long ago a class action lawsuit was filed against BMW in an effort to make these documents publicly accessible from all manufacturers. www.wsj.com/articles/car-repair-notices-feed-lawsuits-1436138283 The solution is to NOT buy a new BMW that does not have a paper owner's manual. We have the power of the wallet and that is the only thing that bMW wants... your wallet. Fight back and say NO, I will NOT buy that BMW, they don't care about me enough to even supply a manual. Buy something made by someone who cares about you after the sale is over.

I wrote them an email already to that effect, in fact Unfortunately, I didn't know before I bought the bike - I'm okay with the DVDs and I ordered a set for the last available year. I should send you the patronizing response from Customer Service which was essentially, only BMW techs are skilled enough to fix the bikes. It is the height of hubris. I'll look into thr class action.
