Lol thats me on s55 race with my m4 e85 vs redeye. To add to your video I have put almost 38k race miles running only full e85 almost at 600whp and have over 100 races running at that power level. Only issues I have had in my last three years and 38k miles racing were spark plugs/ ignition coils / fuel injectors. I testify for s55 being one of the best engines in the world

LS guy in the comments section here, it’s insane what catless DPs, E85 and a couple more bolt ons does to these engines. They are already underrated from factory especially in the Supra Mk5, putting to the ground basically what they claim at the crank. I might be an LS guy but I can appreciate good engineering no matter the make.

Yeah I was glad he mentioned it too. I've got an m240i with a b58 from 2018, I've owned the car since 3k miles and now it has over 54k. I beat the shit out of this car on country roads and even highway pulls up to 160mph and never had a problem with it. If you let the car warm up to operating temperature and keep on top of the regular maintenance like oil and filters etc the platform is truly amazing.

@@AzrealJ Just regular oil/filter changes really and also the spark plugs every few years. Bmw recommend doing the oil change every 16k miles, but I'd say 8-10k is more reasonable if you plan on keeping the car long term. I've had mine for almost 60k miles now with 0 engine issues. Gearbox oil is another one that bmw says is "lifetime", however again, I'd say at least at 80k miles it migth be a good idea to change it. If you keep on top of the fluid changes and let the car warm up before you start revving it up, it should treat you well.

Having now owned an n54, it can make about 600 whp reliably as pistons can fail as low as 650, however than can make 700 reliably if you modify it very well (and if you have one of the stronger 07 or is motors) however maintenance on these is very costly and it is costing me a great deal right now. I don't think it's underrated. It's just that for a lot of us car guys, we either don't have the money to buy a newish BMW with less mileage and a warranty, or the money to maintain a high mileage BMW. It's just better horsepower per dollar to go with an LS or coyote, both of which would be more reliable at higher mileage than the BMW. But we can't deny that, if done properly, a modded BMW turbo inline 6 is a force to be reckoned with.

Owning N54 with two-three bolt on parts and simple Stage 1+ tune from MHD I can't say a bad thing about this car. I'm surprised it's that reliable after hearing all these horror stories. Yeah, it has these expensive injectors, water pump, HPFP but not gonna lie, FCP Euro got you covered. In case of injectors though, you don't need to replace them. Yeah, I know that's shocking but all you need to do most of the time is clean injector tips and replace teflon seals, that's all. I have plans to chase the power but I'm not sure if I really need it. 390hp that MHD claims (never dyno'ed, idk if it's true) is enough for me and I don't know if making car less reliable is worth doing all these mods. Toyota saw potential in the b58 and that says it all There was a comparison drag race between an mustang Mach 1 auto vs MKV Supra 3.0 vs Nissan Z auto. The Z came in dead last and the mustang and Supra tied, b58 swings above its weight class and its already beating its direct competition
@joshreynolds729

Above it’s class? All of those cars are equally expensive. I watched the video and the mustang won by half car being na then the Supra turbo then the z also turbo both are lighter On forced induction and still lost to a na mustang Mach 1 which is just a track GT 🤣. Now is it probably the king of all inline 6 motor yep sure is but I’m not a fan of aluminum blocks either. It is impressive but would be nothing without a lot of boost and light weight saving. I prefer to make big power without having to even change my power adder or internals, weight saving can be had later. Boosted motors are not reliable and the more power you push through it the less it becomes. Also bmw has many electrical problems but the design is strong being an inline motor due to balance but only matters if the internals can handle it because the design flaw is torsion having 6 inline subject to snapping cranks and doing block damage but needs boost available to which it does not stock therefore it incomplete and might as well get the 2 extra cylinders if I’m going to build anyways for 1000 plus hp something these cars can’t do unless built on a lot of boost. Mustangs don’t need to be built to make good power and they actually sound good however still aluminum block. Now for a street car daily that you can make relatively fast sure. Not my top choice but everybody seems to think it’s the fastest platform out because they watch babyaga 🤣.

This is a good summary but you would have really stood out from other engine reviewers if you mentioned the N55 from the MPerformance line. The N55 in the M235i comes with forged rods and crankshaft. The same rods and crank that later went into the M2’s N55 and the M3/M4 S55 motor. The forged internal N55 is the real power successor to the N54 as they’re pushed over 700whp stock block.

Actually the first time a turbo charged engine was inside a M car was in 2011. The BMW 1M, the 1M was the first turbocharged M car , it came with the n54 pushing about 340 hp. It's actually the most powerful n54 in stock form from factory. And it had a few differences from the n54s in the 335s, 135s, like it came with 2 oil coolers. It only came in manual and all the suspension parts including the brakes were taken from the e92 m3. Also the turbos on the BMW 1M n54 are slightly bigger than the other n54s. And it was limited to about 6000 units world wide. S55 was the 2nd turbocharged M engine

I am terrified of used German cars watching friends get whacked with them . I want to believe they are not a bad bet as a value prop as used car if you want to drive rich on a middle class budget but i both see in real life and certainly hear on social that its a risky proposition . I have a friend who finally covered and garaged his BEAUTIFUL low mileage V-10 M-5 he got for 20 something after dropping another 20K on stuff , then a year later did all brakes /tires and a few other small things for 10k and thinking he was good for another 50K and something else failed , he wont talk about after he was always on about his V-10 M-5 . He has like 4-5 BMW and Ducatti motorcyles and likes ' Nice Stuff" and has some money but dont ask him about that Cherry M-5 if you want him in a good mood. I had an f82 M4 with the S55. The stock intercooler leaked all over my cylinders for like a month straight. When it finally put it into limp mode, I changed the stock intercooler to a metal one myself and it's ran like brand new. Granted, it could've seized the motor and blown it up, but that's literally my point. How that engine ran that smooth after that is beyond me. I ran lucas fuel treatment through it to keep the cylinders clean and lubricated, I put a low amount of octane booster per fill up to ensure I was always running 93-94 octane and I put CRC cylinder and engine cleaner through it twice in 15k miles and it purred like a kitten. @@commontopg3320 Nah, that's absolutely standard in the industry of engineering. And it's perfectly legal as well. You will buy your competitors products, take a close look at them, do some tests with them and then come up with something own that incorporates some of the good qualities of the competitors while preferably not having the bad qualities and being cheaper. As long as you don't copy something that is patented everything is fine. Look at Stark Future for example. They built a new kind of electric motocross bike. They openly said that to not have to do the research on frame stiffness where they have no previous experience in, they bought all other motocross bikes from big manufacturers and tested their frame stiffness. They then came up with their own frame built around their component layout that has similar stiffness characteristics to all the other frames. So they didn't copy anything because they needed a totally different frame anyway, but they derived their target values from researching competitors products.

Want me to show you the coal on the back of my n54 cars bumper to show you DI under high load is NOT lean…. You are misinformed. it’s only able to do that when it’s under light load cruising conditions, under heavy load it’s actually LESS efficient than the indirect injection. This is because the indirect spray absorbs heat better than the quick squirt of direct, and the larger quantity fuel having to be injected under boost/load means it has less time to mix with air charge. Can you visualize it yet? under light load the DI is super efficient, but under heavy load the port injection mist cools the runner and mixing before the intake valve provides a more even and consistent burn at wide open throttle… Also picture the spray pattern of the direct injector, at low loads those pores are spraying perfect atomized fuel mists into the chamber. At high load they go full super soaker just to try to meet the insane fuel load requirement, which do you think they’re designed to operate at efficiently?

Regular Maintenance is key. I have an N55 and the only problem was a blown radiator from being way too ignorant and doing heavy pulls every chance I got. FBO, few aftermarket maintenance parts, straight pipes, upgraded injectors & hpfp, along with a tune has me at 480 to the wheel. I daily it and outside of that radiator problem I've had no issues. I drove it 1100 miles in one go and it didn't let me down at 90k miles :)

This is why turbo 6 cylinder engine or converting natural aspirated 6 cylinder into a turbo or twin turbo setup has the potential to be V8 killers. If you swap the the 2 factory turbos in a N54 with aftermarket low inertia turbochargers such as 2 Garrett GBC 20-300 turbos, you can make 600 hp with very little turbo lag.

I was wondering if you would do a video on the BMW m57 engine and mainly the e90 335d here in the states, I'm astonished at how little attention and content there is on them as they make an easy 500+ tq at the wheels and 50 mpg with a piggyback tuner, stock out of the box! The platform has been around for sometime and still evolves and I think it would be excellent video of this quality and enlightenment!

most versions of that engine are a beast when it comes to upgrades, all you need is a bigger VG turbo and a dude with a laptop that knows his thing, to make some easy HP and NM xD I am driving an e39 with the smallest M57, the D25 with a turbo (direct bolt-on) from an e60 m57d30tu (218) and a remap, it hits the fuel limit at around 230 bhp at the wheels, but this isnt what is insane about it, the insane is that it hits a little over 600nm, for some reason that thing PULLS like a train! Couple of months ago i had to give a tug to a friend of mine with his 190e (yes, i pulled a merc on a rope :D ) which wouldnt start and at 1 moment i received a call from the guy (i had forgoten i have a car on my tow hook) "dude, slow down, we gonna get killed" - the bro was terrified as it was *not us doing a 160km/h while pulling the car by a rope* by the way the car gives an economy around the 50 mpg when driven calmly :)

I'm a Euro car tech. Been working on cars such as these for over 25 years. I, personally, own a 2010 Camaro. My Camaro costs less initially and has had the engine built(by me) to leave any of these potentially modded Ms way behind. I make more horsepower for less money in a lighter car. You don't buy a performance Beamer to strip it for weight...the creature comforts and luxury are part of the draw when choosing the brand. Yes, the 3 series handles like a full on track car in factory form, but for straight line drag racing, it's more cost effective to start with a SRT, Mustang, Camaro, or older Vette. My 6.2L LS3 is no longer 376ci. Bored and stroked to 416ci(6.8L) with forged internals, larger injectors, custom intake with larger throttlebody, custom ground cam, 12.5:1 compression thanks to +9cc dome Wiseco pistons, CSR electric water pump, and several other upgrades. My car, however, is modded and upgraded in ways you would NEVER do to a Beamer. Strengthened internally Tremec TR6060 6sp with a dual plate clutch mated to a lightened flywheel, built rear-end with 4.10 gears. Upgraded stiffer suspension(Lakewood struts, shocks, and springs) for drag racing. 315/35R20 Nittos out back for the street. Doors, front fenders, and nose replaced with much lighter ABS versions. Poly laminate windows all around that are fully functional for more weight savings. Carbon fiber trunk lid and carbon fiber hood with a 3" cowl. The interior was kept "factory looking" but has been stripped in unseen areas for extreme weight saving. Custom fuel cell and battery box in the trunk. Dynoing well over 800 rearwheel hp WITHOUT any boost...all motor. My point: I have a car that can take almost any modded forced induction Beamer in a straight line...be it from a dig or rolling. For EXPONENTIALLY less money. You don't buy a Beamer to mod it in such a manner. You run the risk of catastrophic failure any time you push an engine to such levels and that means tens of thousands of dollars in repairs or replacement for a Beamer. You buy a Beamer for the luxury combined with above par performance with a modicum of reliability. That's why you pay the premium price for performance oriented BMW models such as the Ms. I work on these cars every day. I have access to potential deals on great chassis to build from as well as much lower priced performance parts than anyone in the general public can access. And still, I built a 2010 Camaro for my street toy. Why? Because 99% of don't understand the costs involved in modding a Beamer with very, very few being able to do the work themselves meaning costs double because you have to pay someone like me to do it. If you have the money and want to build such a Beamer, go right ahead. Your choice and your money. But in the humble opinion of a veteran Euro Tech, any outcome of doing so just isn't worth the money. Please understand, I take no credit away from such vehicles. The engineering and potential all-around performance of a modded M-series is to be applauded and revered. I only wish to make the point of doing so isn't cost effective in the least when a fast street car is what you want.

I believe the N55 came with forged crank in the higher output "M lite" cars. I think BMW pistons are cast and the rods are forged all around. People make too much of a fuss about the cranks when the "cast" N55 crank is a very tough cast iron unit and people have pushed these over 700hp with no issues. Aside from the head design the N54 and N55 blocks are almost identical, the main difference between them is the original N55 had a ridiculously small turbo and that's why people couldn't get as much power out of it. The later engines with the bigger EWG turbo had the same performance as the N54 on stock hardware, which is typically around 380-400hp. Some will claim their N54 makes 450hp or something silly like that with a remap, these are simply going to tuners with very, very generous dynos.

The N54 was incredibly impressive when it launched. Had a 335i since new (and was fortunate enough to get euro delivery on it). I still cannot forget how that thing felt in 2006. People love to dismiss the twin turbo setup as inferior to the later single turbo N55, but honestly there was so little lag that the lack of power was more than made up for by how responsive it was. EDIT: At 7:40 you mention the overblowing of issues to sell parts. Best example of this is probably the Porsche M96 IMS bearing.

The twin turbo setup is not inferior at all, it's the whole reason why the N54 make more power than the N55 on stock turbos, there's a lot more room for improvement out of the box. And while people going for silly power with the N54 will change the setup to a single turbo, the reason for this is size constraints (and cost, one big turbo is cheaper than two medium size ones), when you want 750+hp you can not fit large enough twin turbos in that engine bay you have to go for a single. But for the 500-750hp range aftermarket twin turbos offer the best balance of top end power and low/midrange response, a single turbo setup for the same peak power will have less low end torque/more lag. Those big single turbos people online seem to love make the engine useless below 3500rpm and I always thought it was a pretty stupid thing to do in a road car.
