10 years ago you could order a 2JZ-GTE for $2800-$3200 from most crate engine websites and always available. The terminator 4.6Ls were around $4000-$4500. An LS1 fell right between the two. It's crazy how much things have changed in such a short period. 2JZs were cheap considering what they are. I wish i had bought about 50 of them and stored them.

i know for a fact that about 10yrs ago around the world in most junkyards (including in America) the 2JZ-GE and some 2JZ-GTE was being sold as scrap metal (its a heavy chunk of pig iron)... they would buy all these worthless cars from Japan that used these engines, import them, strip them and then sell it for scrap metal... now the reason why i know this is because my 2JZ-GTE was going to be sold for scrap before i bought it (paid $900 for it), it was sitting in an area with about 15 other 2JZ-GE waiting for the truck to pick them up to be sold as scrap...

People start to swap those engines to everything that have 4 wheels, and most of then are at least at 800 hp mark. Years ago was just an reliable JDM engine. Toyota Supra being the ''owner'' of this engine, also got into the ''classic'' car culture and now, an Toyota Supra also costs huuuuge amounts of money. It´s safe to say the LS engine is the winner just by availability. You have many gens of Camaros and Corvettes around using that engine, many engines in the shops, into the junk, and even in the GM page as crate engine (brand new). After that, you have ton of people working with these engines and many companys with aftermarket pieces for it... And i think into the near future, the 2 JZ availability and price only tend to get worst and worst.

*Please do correct me if I am wrong* , but I personally think the B58 is just as strong as a 2JZ-GTE (both at 9 in terms of strength) There are many B58s RELIABLY handling well over 800-850whp (equivalent to 1000bhp) on unopened stock engines. Titan motorsports had a stock unopened B58 rated at over 850whp and they constantly abused it, over 120 dyno runs, many different fuels tested on it, and loads of quarter mile passes, it never blew up, they just replaced it with a built engine to be on the safe side. When they tore it down, most of the parts looked pretty much new as well! The B58's factory aluminium block has incredibly thick walls and was originally designed for high performance Diesel engines. Papadakis racing has been constantly abusing their built B58 drift motor (1100whp) for quite a few years now, it still has the stock aluminium block and also the stock crankshaft. The current 2JZ stock internal record stands at 1106whp, the current B58 stock internal record is around 950whp. Give it some time and I bet there will be a few 1000whp stock internal B58s around. In terms of reliability (bone stock form, with stock auxiliary parts), both engines are reliable, but they do have their issues. The B58 has cooling system issues, coolant hoses that burst and leak at times etc, the valve cover gasket/PCV valve is also known to fail early on in its life, causing oil leaks. The 2JZ-GTE's stock twin turbos aren't that good and have been known to fail, affecting the reliability, most tuners have single turbo swapped the 2JZ-GTE in order to improve reliability. The stock 2JZ-GE (naturally aspirated) on the other hand has hardly any common issues and is bulletproof. The 2JZ on the other hand I believe has a lot more availability compared to the B58, considering it has been around for so long (30+ years), thousands of tuning companies are still producing after market 2JZ parts to this day, blocks, rotating assemblies and many more.

Seems mostly focused on American cars and Japanese imports so he couldn't possibly rate the 2J below the B58. B58 is IMO a way better engine. Not even really comparable. BMW M50's with turbos run against 2J's and the B58 is miles above that engine

Outstanding video and content my guy!!! You never disappoint. My only pushback here is the availability of the B58. Admittedly I haven’t checked on prices from junkyard pulls so I’m totally open to the idea that they are insanely priced. That being said, the B58 has been in production since 2016 and is used in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8 series cars as well as all the RWD based X platforms excluding the new XM. They’re hugely plentiful at least here in the US, but you’re right in that they are either a premium option or the cheapest engine on a higher series car/SUV.

I been boosted for over 4 years now, 33k miles on boost , close to 900whp for over 2 years, 750whp first two on pump gas and i go to Mexico all the time. 2015 5.0 TT un open engine stock OPGs, stock MT82 and i know people that push over a 1000whp on completely stock internals. i do not know one person with 750 whp termi cobra that had no issues with their engine, even after 2 years. I know a guy with 03 cobra, after his 3 modular ford engines (around 1000whp) he went LS. There are sustain rules when it comes to coyotes and if you do not follow them and cut corners you end up with problems, if you are doing everything right then they will live long life even at 1000+whp. But looking past that there have been many applications where this engine has proved it’s self. That being said when it comes to this engines power per dollar amount it is poor, admittedly. I believe a segment in depth on the EJ VS. FA could really expand what’s already out there on both of these types of engines. There’s a lot of miss information about EJs out there.

Most “newer” engines are just continued developments of older engines. The biggest advances are in head designs, valvetrain, induction, etc. the RB engine for example has its roots in the L series engines from as early as the 60’s. The LS engine is much more recent having been developed in the 90’s. The newest engines also have not had as much time to mature in the modding community, where older engines have been tried and tested by so many people, almost like crowd engineering as people mod them and find what works and doesn’t. Once the newest engines have been around for longer, they will end up being better than their predecessors.

The LS platform is really not that recent at all, each generational update is great but it's still an 80s, maybe even 70s chevy SBC with modern manufacturing tolerances and faster ECUs.

The SBC was developed back in the 50s and the LS is really just incremental evolutions of that. The ford mod motors were all new in the early 90s and even the 6.2 or the 6.8 v10 are simply variations of that engineering. The new godzilla is one I'm interested in seeing more development in, the rumored all aluminum 6.8 version would be very fun to play with. Of course I've always wondered how fords v8 would have turned out if they evolved the old Windsor for the modern age also. Bet it wudda been a LS eater.

You're spot on with the 2JZ vs B58 conversation. I owned a mk5 supra, then switched to a 340i xDrive with a 6MT. Water pump failures do occur but there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to why. The crankcase ventilation issue can be solved with a $20 part and common sense to perform preventative maintenance. I can't wait to see how many miles I'll be able to put on mine!

If you are building the LS gen 4 engine, the AFM on the 4th gen LS engine is a non issue. You can eliminate that mess when you swap the cam. Also if you have a vehicle with a gen 4 LS and you need to put a gen 3 in it, there is a way to do that while keeping the original gen 4 ECM. You have to take the crankshaft out and take it to a machine shop and have the Gen 4 sensor pressed onto the crank. You also have to swap out the cam sensors. I had to do this on my 08 Silverado which came with a 4th gen 5.3 liter. I replaced it with a 6L LQ4 which is a gen 3 which doesn't have the AFM like my original engine. After I did it the engine only ran on 4 cylinders which kind of freaked me out. I took the ECM out of it and brought it to a tuner and he fixed it. I think I paid him about $200. I've been driving it like this for about three years. You also have to modify your original knock sensor which is not that hard. I plan to do it but right now I'm still running around without a knock sensor. There is also a way to swap it out by buying some kind of computer device. I can't remember what it's called it's got a funny name. I wanted to keep my original gen 4 ECM. If you want to get rid of AFM then putting a 3rd gen LS in is a way to do it. The electronic thing with the funny name is called a ligenfelter and they cost about $300 Also the reason I had to swap the engine was the stupid AFM messed up and trashed my engine. I also put a new Melling high-volume oil pump on it while it was apart it has excellent oil pressure.

The B58 does not have forged pistons, the S58 does not the B58. The 2JZ will make 1000hp on its stock head and bottom end....like 3 times then it will let go lol. That is well documented, somebodies brother-sister-mother-cousin will come and say mine made 1000whp for 89 years probably there are a few of them that did but for the most part, nah. They were dyno queens with show off sheets that were detuned on the street. To consistently make over 1000whp it will have to be built, so yea you are right about the head performance. 600whp is much more comfortable for them for longevity stock block. A lot of the 90s Japanese motors could survive a ridiculous amount of hp, from the VG, RB, 6G72, 3S, and 4G63, among a few others because they were built to withstand the early 90s ECUs that were not exactly accurate lol, larger tolerances had to be built into them. Most of them could make 5-600whp on their stock heads&bottom ends.

I don't know about the B58, but I know the N55 had forged internals in the high performance car, meaning M235/M2 and so on, so I'd imagine it's similar for the B58.

Idk it’s believable. Motive video has a well documented rb26 that made a hair under 1k on the stock bottom end for dozens of runs down the strip and beating on the street without issue. It’s well known the 2j is an overall stronger motor so I wouldn’t doubt it.

Here to remind everyone that the standing mile world record holder is an oem block and heads 5.4L Ford GT that ran 0-300.4 mph in 21 secs. The quickest 1/4 on an almost entirely oem cast engine is a John Mihovetz prepped 4.6 4V that with only non oem rods, pistons, and camshafts installed, ran 5.88 @ 250mph . These are absolute accomplishments on oem engines.

I'm glad you got most of the things addressed. I can't stress enough how tough fuel emissions are that cause weaker engines today. So many moving parts that fail as well as inherently weaker blocks that have massive coolant passages in an open deck design to cool the combustion chamber, as we all know, cause mushrooming in the combustion chamber which can lead to blown head gaskets. Don't even get me started on the purposely choked intake ports on Hondas and their SOHC engines. For me, a powerful N/A engine is one that makes over 100bhp per liter displacement, with 150-175 hp per liter displacement being perfect for track-configured engines (YES, YOU CAN ACHIEVE THAT WITH 310+DEGREE CAMS AND A HIGHER RPM). The amount of arguments I've had telling me 140hp from a 2l engine naturally aspirated is to be admired, drives me crazy. Another note. Rod ratio. To make modern engines fit into a smaller more compact design they make the block shorter, in doing so making the rod shorter. This is why you find many modern 4 or 6-cylinders running a 1.5:1 rod ratio, which harms the bearings' life span, and thus why you get spun rods. Combine that with most rod bearings which run tighter tolerances to allow the oil to heat up faster from a cold start, and you have a recipe for trouble. Don't believe me? Look at Fa20s. Unless you deal with the oil cavitation issues, you can even spin the bearings at stock power levels. Using a 1.5:1 rod ratio might be good for tuning because of the lack of compression dwell, but it's not worth the trade-off for a longer rod ratio that has better secondary harmonics and better bearing stress.

The 2020 makes 335 and is an inherently weaker engine. The Ej20 and 25's compared the their early generation closed deck, are weaker. The Fa20, its successor, is a less reliable platformed when boosted.

Even outside of the US the B-series availability and aftermarket is there. You do have to spend a little more than you would a K-series but that's what makes the comparison that much more interesting

The 2jz-gte did not come in the IS300/Altezza. The Altezza had the NA ge subvariant. Also, similar to the various 2jz variants, the B58 also has multiple sub variants. The mk5 supra came in the B30C (2020) and B30O1 (2021+) variants.

I wanted to see you factor in the older 426 big block Hemis vs the new and modern day Apache Hemis, also the Hellcats. Would've been nice, but I still enjoyed this video, goes to show old isn't always better, and the new generation of engine builders, and tuners, have opened the doors and paved the way to both innovative performance, AND racing excellence. The newer engines are a little cheaper to modify and tune compared to the older ones, everything is technological than to bolt on forced induction to squeeze power out of the engine blocks. It's incredible how simple intakes, and a little flash/ecu tune can make a BMW, or even a Nissan Z car run a LOT faster than from the factory assembly line. Cannot get enough of these videos! You do an amazing job EVERY time!!! You need a Grammy fr!!!

I have the M54B30. Can't wait until I start piecing to together my turbo kit. This engine was made for boost. It's the closest engine to the B58, except its not turbocharged from the factory. But the block is an aluminum closed deck design with cast iron cylinder walls and oil squirters. It's the German 2JZ just without the twin turbos from the factory.

Mercedes M104 is the best alternative to the 2JZ if one wants a strong straight-6. Used in a lot of Mercedes models around the world, so crazy plentiful, and really strong. Really cheap too, i've seen the 3.6L AMG version selling for a quarter of what a 2JZ sells for today.

This video is awesome. I'm doing an LT swap instead of an LS swap and let me tell you the aftermarket support is very minimal compared to the LS. Everything needs to be done some roundabout way from mounting and placement to fueling. Still worth it tho lol

The Ignition system is shit. I would be getting a 24x reluctor for the crank, and run the 0411 PCM, with LS coils, or the Northstar coilpack/module setup.

I think people's experience has to play a major factor into it as well seeing as people have a lot of experience tuning older engines and parts are readily available whereas newer engine upgrades are still in R&D stages for a lot of them and have not been stress tested as much as the older ones.

Love the video! Just one thing, the gs300/ is300/ sc300 engine is the 2JZ-GE, not the GTE, which are very very similar, but not the exact same, with the GTE version having a few advantages over the GE, so the availability of the GTE is practically zero in my opinion.

Ive bled ford blue since owning a 69 Mustang and fox bodies, but........ I LOVE my LS3! My only complaint is the LS lifter bucket design which can allow a lifter to rotate on the cam if it wears out and send metal shavings all through your engine. I prefer the OG 5.0 dog bone and spider retainer method.

Great video! I think engineering efficiency would’ve been a good metric to feature. For example, a lighter engine block loses initial durability but reduce the power to weight ratio, requiring less power to go fast. A lower power requirement translates into less strain on the motor overall improving reliability. However, as I write this out, I’m thinking maybe that might not have been necessary for your purposes haha

Always a compromise to choose. I used to like aluminum blocks but iron is hard to beat in its price vs strength and reliability especially when you throwing alot of performance into it. If it was strictly a track car then all aluminum it is, because it's clocking times.

i feel like, as simulation tools are more widely available, the manufacturers are able to save cost and weight by putting less safety margins. The older engines are built stronger as there are no easy way to test the reliability of engine outside of building one and run them to the ground. This is also compounded by the fact that knocking is more prevalent due to slower electronics , lack of sensors, and purely mechanical systems of controlling timing and AFR. As such they need to beef up the engine blocks to account for those.

It will be more interesting to compare the late 80's to mid 90's Windsor 5.0 EFI versus Coyote 5.0. The terminator V8 is only available on one model, a very expensive SVT Mustang. In contrast Windsor 5.0 EFI are used from Fox Body Mustang, Thunderbirds, Explorer (1994-2000), Lincolns, Econoline, F-Series and LTD Crown Vic. With a few bolt on modifications (without altering the short block), it could reach up to 400hp comparable to Coyote.

Yeah, Windsors can make 400hp, and stock bottom end can handle 700. But there are not great motors to Rev high, fuel economy. Coyotes are one of the best v8 ever

Excellent video sir. One thing not mentioned was something available today which was not available in the 90s early 2000s. CAD and AI. There was no available CAD computing and AI in the 90s and early 2000s to figure out the manufacturing strengths of rods, pistons, etc etc. So manufacturers had to over build engines. Now, computers can figure out quite accurately when a rod or piston will fail so as to give manufacturers the foresight to skimp on said parts.

I don't think older engines are "better", it's more older engines have been around longer and thus are generally better understood and more supported by the aftermarket. You have some really good engines both old and new but your options are likely to be fewer if the engine just came out.

I love this channel, and I absolutely dig the music and aesthetic. I also admit, I am just an old school engine junky. Even when newer engines can make more power, I still prefer the simplicity of many older engines. I respect what modern engines can do from the factory and with mods, but they also have far too many things that can go wrong.

I've never had a Supra but I ran LS cars for a long time, and had a 99 and 03 Cobra, 10 GT and 17 GT with a supercharger. I'd take the terminator for fun any day even if its a little slower. That brutal feeling when you gas it is the best.

you get it wrong on the LS vs LT with the exception of cost. Newer tech always cost more. But Richard Holdener has proved the LT to be basically a better LS in every metric, with real dyno numbers. Things will wven be more drastic with boost between the 2, because of how much control you have with fuel on the DI system.

if you look at the most fuel efficient cars older engines beat newer ones. Geo metro, VW Rabbit, Honda CRX were getting 50+ MPG without hybrid systems and other fancy tech.
