9 out of 10 times is voltage regulator. I replace mine yesterday and it just work like it was before so thanks for the video it really helped guys before you do anything else to check your voltage regulator second thing check on your relay in the glove box this is the one of the two things that happens and also try to check change your batteries because if the voltage regulator goes bad alternator will most likely damage your battery too thanks for the video again that really helped

How did you diagnose if it was the voltage regulator as supposed to the alternator?
@JohnnyDIY3 жыл бұрын
The alternator is almost never the problem as the voltage regulator has spring loaded brushes that make the contacts that wear out over time. This causes the battery not to get a full charge eventually draining the battery. Take a voltmeter when the car is running and test the current voltage. It should bee around 14v. If it's anything a lit less the brushes are likely worn out and your voltage regulator needs to be changed.

The voltage regulator doesn't happen to have the diode in it, does it? ... I have parasitic drain on my battery over an extended period of time, and when I checked with the meter. It's the alternator causing the draw
@JohnnyDIY Жыл бұрын
I think it might. It would be built into the voltage regulator. This part is cheap and easy to change so it's definately worth a try. I've heard of alternators being the cause of parasitic draw before. I've just never had my car have that problem. I changed mine out due to worn contact brushes which resulted in low power to battery and the car electronics acting weird.

Hey Johnny… did that new VR solve the charging malfunction light issue? I’m having the same issue on my E61 N54. New Battery (registered) …. 6 months later started getting the Charging Malfunction light intermittently. Voltage shows 12.4-12.6 while running. Wondering if that was your issue and if this fixed it.
@JohnnyDIY3 жыл бұрын
Yes. And while running your alternator should push 13.x at least or its not working right.

SIMILAR ISSUE YES. THIS DID FIX IT.

I put new battery in and checked the v and its charging at (car on) at 15.1v
@Jpworld5443 жыл бұрын
That would mean my voltage reg is bad right?
@JohnnyDIY2 жыл бұрын
It's possible. If you car isn't acting up it might be ok. Alternators usually put out on th14.? Range.
