Eric , I hear you. I work on the network/ security team for a steel company. The critical network stuff is totally isolated from the fluff people try to put on the network. Stupid cameras, bar code readers etc. Contractors trying to put their junk on our network for internet access. The list is endless. If it wasn’t isolated the entire network would go down constantly. I hope they start doing that with cars. Don’t put silly unnecessary devices on the network that can easily fail and cause the car to not drive. Maybe two networks. One for critical systems to make the car run and one for the junk that people think they need. For a camera or like you said a door handle to fail and put you on the side of the road is craziness.

@SeersantLoom13 сағат бұрын
Those sensors and cameras have purpose, several purposes actually. All that tech is sneaked in because one day, someone could have all gizmos for driving your car away (already demonstrated and quite possibly in use in rental cars). Remotely, from china or india or whatever far away place. Or leave one stranded in the middle of nowhere (remote shutdown, lock doors etc). Expect no privacy in or around new cars, it is not hard to deduce - they come with cameras, microphones, computers and internet. Its wonderful, isn't it? Spyware on wheels. I've read articles about insurance companies using remote telemetry (the same gizmos all over the car) and asses driving habits, ergo, insurance costs. I guess, the data may be used for car crash investigation too.

When I secured a friend’s business network, I used a few simple techniques. The wifi is powered by the cheapest carrier and is not connected to any device that runs the business. The business network is not connected to the Internet in any way. If a device needs a software update, it is disconnected from the biz network and connected to the wifi for a short time. If they decide they need remote access, it would be with a different carrier.

I'm 72 and I still drive the magnificent old 1986 Toyota 4X4 truck I bought new in '86. Carbureted, simple, designed to be repaired without computers. When the ignitor died and the industry hadn't yet started making inexpensive replacements I did some research and bought a used MSD 6AL and it has been faithfully working for a quarter million miles. If it quits out somewhere there is a very high likelihood I can fix it right out in the field with common hand tools I carry with me. It is common when I am out driving it for someone to pull up next to me and ask if I will sell it. The quality and simplicity of these old rigs is nowadays recognized and appreciated.

Jasper remanufactured replacement going strong for about 20 years now. If no accidents, it will outlive me. Simple computer that just lights up a dash light with coded blinks. Checked the capacitors in the computer recently trying to figure out an erratic engine light that never threw a code. Capacitors checked out like new and narrowed down the problem to water in the gas tank. Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank to the rescue.

Eric I remember back in the early eighties when all this stuff was coming out. I asked a really dumb question.( Why do we need all these ECU'S) The reply was .( It to cut down on the wiring) Cars back then had maybe 15 fuse's. Now we have over 150 fuse's. Ho Ho Ho.
@RepairGeek14 сағат бұрын
How this stuff is integrated is the problem. Then manufacturers wonder why they have so many recalls... This situation reminds me of the video Fordtechmakuloco put out a year or 2 ago about the F150 with shorted taillights. Moisture in the taillights caused a no start and a $5500 repair. There's a fundamental problem when getting into an fender bender that the system was designed to prevent, financially makes more sense than repairing the safety system in question.

Recalls? Manufacturer won't even take responsibility for the issues they've designed without a civil lawsuit. If the warranty lasted as long as the payment plan they'd be motivated to improve the quality of their designs.

Not that he couldn't afford new(er) but rather, it always starts when he turns the key and stays running. Whats worse is his dozer stopped working. He paid a guy hundreds of dollars from the dealer to drive hours to come and fix it and the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong with it. No codes. Its not the first time it has done it. An electrical engineer friend once told me that electronics in a car need to be more robust than what is on the Space Shuttle (it was a while ago). Cars are one of the most hostile environments for electronics. Vibration, water, dirt, oil, extreme heat & cold often on the same trip. All potentially detrimental to electrics. And then the propeller heads come along and decide putting everything on a network is a nifty idea. No redundancy, fault isolation, or even rudimentary fault tolerance. Add in the proprietary devices that become unobtainium once the production run is complete and you have an expensive contraption that becomes junk in a few years. I want my '63 Volvo back ... 😢

My fav cars I've owned were all stick shift, carbureted, with points ignition. Yes, they broke down, were often bastards to start in cold weather. But I COULD FIX THEM. Carb iced up? Stop and have a smoke now and then. Ignition wet? There's a spray for that. Won't start? There's a spray for that. On a 76 Honda I had a switch that jumpered out the coil resistor, killer spark but you better switch it off before the coil melted - car would start on the starter but die immediately when the resistor came back in (auto bypassed with starter), run with no resistor for a few minutes and warm up enough to be OK with it. Dead starter? Park on downhills and bump start it. Brake seized? Tire off and some cold water and a hammer to free up the single sided caliper. First EFI car was a CJ7. Actually super good at not stranding me, I was nervous at first that I could no hope to fix it or even know what was wrong if it failed. Never happened though. But the EFI 4.0 six (4.2 maybe?) had a LOT less torque than the carb one I wore out. No idea why, it just did... not by numbers but by how hard it would pull when max effort was needed. I'm OK with computer cars now, no choice unless I find a mint 1972 Corolla 1600 hatchback somewhere. That was my favorite car ever. Changed the heater core in maybe an hour - unhook hoses and a few wired, take the glove box out, unbolt and drop the core without touching the dash. I'm old enough that (hopefully) I won't be forced to get an EV and deal with the extra BS of that, on top of all the BS gizmos and the touchscreen idiocy already unavoidable. I can't touch a cellphone ($600.00 fine and 3 or 6 points) but I'm allowed - actually no alternative - to look away from the road at a screen and push icons on it if I want to get to the right page and change the heater settings. Give me back my 72 Corolla heater levers and direct Bowden cables to the heater box. Bonus: I could have heater combos that the computer won't allow. Like run defrost without the AC compressor running. (OK, partly because there was no AC compressor but...) And just aside, why the F does a backup camera, door handle, window motor etc have to be on a CAN bus anyway? Just looking at the benefit vs risk would make me say "um... no". I can see it isn't working if it isn't working. Why does it need the ability to shut the whole damn car down?

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Eric O and family. Great to see you on this fine Boxing Day. Unbelievable that a reversing camera can stop you in your tracks, and I had to laugh at the 1 single screw in the hatch cover. It's like they are intentionally trying to "screw" with us. Have a good un. From UK.

Great video Eric. I think you speak for many of us who find the gadgetry of modern vehicles silly and frustrating. It's unfortunate that makers have a disincentive to keep the car working when it's something you can live without. Instead you have to have the car towed to a dealer who may or may not be able to fix it.

An Eric O rant the day after Christmas? What a great gift to SMA fans! Thanks for firing up the camera for this epic Christmas Eve stream of consciousness, Eric. Mrs. O drives a KIA MINIVAN and SNOWBOARDS? That's way cool, man. Merry Christmas to the entire O family, including the kiddos and animals.

If a design makes a corporation money that matters most to them. They don't care about future problems, insofar as they can get away with it, they don't care about the inconvenience, etc. Until people start to reign in our uncontrolled corporate greed this will only continue and it will continue to get worse. That's not 'anti-capitalism' to state that, it's not political, ...we simply, especially as American consumers, get exploited at every turn all in the name of profits. It's exhausting :(. That said, Merry Christmas to all SMA fans:).

Bah humbug! Good luck reining in that corporate greed. Half of that is human nature.

In the computer industry, we crossed this road 20-30 years ago with network protection that keeps the whole building from going down. Things like spanning tree makes sure every device doesn’t cripple the network from one bad device. The car industry loves network devices because they don’t have to run dedicated wiring to specific devices anymore. If they wanted to show the backup camera in the rear dvd player that’s networked, it’s just a programming update. Data+power is all the digital modules really need.

Hope you all had a great Christmas anyway. Most of us agree with you about the added junk on cars. Enjoyed the video thank you for your time.

I feel ya, just in a more analog way. Mom's TV cable went down on her Jeep and started shifting all wonky. I spent Christmas Eve on my back under said Jeep taking it off so she could at least drive it until the part came in. I'd still rather that issue than the KIA issue. I gave up years ago on new cars. Sold my High Country Silverado back to the dealer and picked up a 1998 Dodge Ram 4x4 with a manual transmission. I ended up adding a 2008 Tundra just for fun. That's as new as I get now. They can keep the junk at the dealerships.

You're preaching to choir on this, Eric. I'm afraid my days of purchasing new are over. I like the simplicity of my 2000 Silverado, purchased new and never been in the shop, all maintenance done by me. I'm fortunate not to live in a rust belt and I feel bad for folks who's choices are limited due to rust issues. Anyway, thanks for the video and I hope you have a Merry Christmas!!!

Backup camera on our 2016 Honda Accord also malfunctioned on Christmas Eve. The rectangular target was still there, but there was no image, so I had to back up the old-fashioned way.😢 Bothered us so much we pulled-over and restarted (rebooted 😛) and the image reappeared.

Preach, Preach brother. How wild is it a back up camera would leave you walking. I agree with your sentiment about newer cars.

Very informative as always Eric! So what was the root cause of the issue? You mentioned the camera itself still worked, was there a fault somewhere causing the undervolt condition?
@andynicoll856614 сағат бұрын
Well Eric, it's like the old Christmass lights wired in series. One bulb dies and the whole string is dead and you're checking every bulb till you find the bad one.These systems need to be isolated or some kind of bypass built in so one item doesn't crash the entire system. I'm an electronics zero but some bright programmer should be able to figure it out.I remember Uncle Tony talking about a new Rivian that got water in a tail light assembly, brought the entire system down, thousands of $'s to replace. Sheeit! Anyway Merry, ahh you know.

Great video! One that every new car owner should watch. I feel your frustration, Eric. The automobile manufacturers have over engineered their vehicles. I am going to try to keep my 2005 Hyundai sonata going for as long as I can. Santa was good to me. He brought me an Autel scanner for my present! One is going to have to have one to work on a new car.

Cars today are really more computer than mechanical. When I first started driving it was easy to do your own maintenance on a car. Changing the oil, the spark plugs, points and adjusting the carb were fairly easy. Today that is all controlled by a series of computers all linked together. My 2024 KIA will sense when you are in the middle of a lane and warn you if you go too far off center. It will even steer itself if you want it to. This is my first car that has a backup camera and I still tend to use the mirrors to backup more than relying on the camera. I use the camera just to check myself from time to time.

So, it can be stolen without the thief physically showing up. Start-stop button, drive-by-wire gear change, steering, gas pedal, brakes(?). Everything electronically controlled.

As a mechanic for 35 yrs I fully agree with the crazy complexity complaint. One of the vehicles I work on is a 2000 mack front load garbage truck, I am constantly chasing rodent damaged wires and for the most part its not to hard. Now we have a 2023 mack front load and hoo lee crap are there a lot of wires, massive harnesses doing something, like wow and the rodents do not care what one they chew on. I feel like retiring. Merry christmas Eric and thanks for all the great videos cheers
