Should you buy BMW or Audi? Is BMW reliable? Is Audi reliable? Who wins when we compare BMW reliability vs Audi reliability and who is the best German luxury car maker? Well, we're going to walk through the lineups of these two cars and I'll declare a winner in many different segments. Everything from your first BMW and the first issues or problems you might experience, to the top of the BMW luxury line.
I'll do the same thing with Audi's whole lineup, and we'll talk about Audi electrical issues and some other problems you might experience.
It's #BMW vs #Audi #reliability and while we're focused on buying a reliable car today, these are all fun cars that you'll enjoy driving.

Mark, you talked alot about BMW engines and their model codes but not at all about Audi. Why? How are you going to make a video detailing reliability about 2 luxury car brands but only really express technical knowledge about one of those brands and not the other? Seemed a little one sided. You didnt talk about the engines in the A4, A3, S4 or A6 you mentioned. Are they 4 cyl turbo? 6cyl supercharged?, 8cyl turbo? which of those are reliable and which arent? Which model years for which engine? We need another video like this one, but detailing technical knowledge of Audi engines and their reliability

I own both. I work with Germans. My experience & my German cohorts say Audi has significantly better reliability. Again, I own both & have owned both on & off or like now, own both simultaneously.... I have no bias one to another. My dd is a BMW, I do love the way it drives but it's 10-to-1 bmw issue for every issue that arises with my current Audi or the previous one we had. Just one guys' experience along with relaying what his German friends have for their opinions too.

I agree i think although not perfect audi is better than BMW. This being said, i’m a lexus owner and i love its reliability. Not the optimal driving machine but at least i dont cry after leaving the garage

@@stea2494 I don't agree I have always had issues with Audi - Gear box & Electronic dash board on my Q7 however I'm going back to 1997 with my Audi A6 Auto gear box because they were using French Renault Auto Gear boxes crap and 2007 for my Q7. I have had BMW's 5 series since 1989 never had a problem with them of any sort. I have had the X series which I still do no problems whatsoever however they are diesel not petrol.

I heard that Audis and VWs are seen very differently and not in a good way in North America compared to Europe. Where I’ve lived so far (Eastern Europe & UK) I’ve never heard anybody complain about any VW or any (inline 4) Audi (I’ve heard some stuff about the big V6s). When browsing the American part of the internet it seems like they are the worst cars ever and do not make any financial sense, they are trash, money pits and always leave you on the side of the road, with services that rip you off. Maybe they differ in build quality, or maybe the difference is the fact that in Europe we use mostly diesels (because petrol is about 3 times more expensive than in the US and diesels have way better fuel economy), which might mean that the diesel engines are actually better made perhaps?

I have a 2006 A6 Avant that I bought in 2008 as a CPO car. It now has just shy of 300,000km on it and is still running strong. No big issues, just keeping up with maintenance. The 3.2 is a great motor and replacing the timing belt tensioners is part of the deal with them. Only had to do that once. Uses one liter of oil between 10,000km oil change intervals and that's about it.

If I'm paying more for a car I expect reliability. All of the leather and chrome in the world doesn't mean anything if I can't actually drive the car. Boring cars? Nothing is more boring than driving a loaner because your car is in the shop.

Reality is MB/BMW/Audi know they have status seeking suckers for clients and treat them accordingly, knowing that no matter how bad they treat them the brand cache will keep them coming back. People who have money and don't care about status make sensible choices and buy Lexus.

I used to own a bmw 3 series. I was going up a steep hill when I heard a loud bang and the head gasket blew. I serviced this car on time and looked after it. I now own a 2020 Toyota Corolla and I have never been happier!! Will never look at German cars again.

@marks90004 every time I see a Tesla in a parking lot I check the panel gaps. I still have not seen one that has good panel gaps. Some are worse than others, but every single one is jacked up. I bet you can’t find a Toyota with jacked up gaps.

Yep. We had a lot of customers looking green after big stuff went wrong on their "prestige" German cars, think the worst one was a 9k mile from new Audi with a stretched timing chain. The customer was told to do one by Audi, it was a month out of warranty. Shocking.

I have a 2006 BMW x3 6 speed manual I bought in 2007. It was a dealer car used by a sales person and listed to sell as a CPO with 5700k. The M54 hasn’t given me any trouble. I moved from NY with 46k in 2020 and drove it to California in record high heat. Coincidentally when I met my realtor in CA for the first time she had a 2008 6 speed manual so we got along famously. She was jealous because I only had 49k when we met and she was in 150k+. We both still have our X3s. What sucks is that we can’t replace our 6 speed manuals with anything new. However, the best thing out of our relationship (other than finding us a house) was that she knew the best BMW mechanic, body shops and dealerships in the area. My baby is happy, as am I, in its new home. That’s all you can ask for as a car owner.

All of my Audis have been more reliable than my G20 330i. I feel my BMW has designed components to be 'at the limit' - so (especially) lead footed drivers risk early component failure. Also with Audis they respond well to tunes. + I Love the way they float on the road.. Handlings a bit soft though. My next car will be an Audi.

In the space of 3 days I saw 2 BMW 6 series being towed of the highway. One was a M convertible and the other was a regular 6 series hardtop. I have the 2018 fully loaded X1 and it's the best car I have even purchased. It has 30K Kms now and has not been back to the dealer once for a warranty issue. The engine is also in almost the entire BMW line up including the 4 cylinder Toyota Supra. BMW has gotten much better while everyone I know with an Audi is in the shop at least once or twice a year for a warranty issue.

My first Audi was a 2015 Q7 that I bought just out of warranty in 2019. It had some issues...fairly minor, but expensive ($600 rear seatbelt buckle), rear windshield wiper motor, steering fluid leak. We liked the styling but realized we needed a warranty so traded that in and now have 2018 Q5 and S5. Bought extended warranty for both. Audi repair is so expensive that the warranty is necessary. Fingers crossed we have good luck with these cars.

Just bought 2015 Audi Q5 2.0t and experiencing oil consumption issues. Car run great no smoke or noises. Local mechanic told me to use Liqui Moly to slow consumption. I wonder if I can run this reliable for a few years and keep close eye on oil levels?

It may be ok but with too much consumption it could lead to spark plug fouling and possible misfire if things get back enough and fouled or plugged Catalytic Convertors are pricey. Personally I would also monitor the rate of consumption and make sure things do t get worse. There are some engines that use a little oil regardless

@@123andme Absolutely! But every single manufacturer has the "1 qt OR MORE per 1000 miles is acceptable" disclaimer. The difference is some can barely stay within that limit, others don't need to worry. My 2004 4Runner with 280,000 miles doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes (4-5,000mi).

@@123andmenot true, small turbo engines with high compression and a need to be “green” use thin oil which does lead to blow by etc. the PVC recirc into the intake of modern cars also doesn’t help. Oil dilution will be more of an issue going forward for any brand. Objectively your statements on other brands not having problems is false. I’d point out dealers make their money off of service and Toyota service bays are as full as anyone else’s. The intellectual dissonance required to believe otherwise is startling.

Yes, the cosmetics is generally the first thing to consider when buying a car. If it looks great, it must be great. Not knowing the mechanical problems you will encounter down the road with engine and transmission. $968 for annual maintenance is not exactly cheap. More if you need a new engine rebuilt, replaced. And transmission issues. Those repairs are not cheap.

Another problem with the n20 is that it sounded like a diesel. The b48 is very fuel efficient. In fact my 2019 330i xdrive is more fuel Efficient than my 2016 Mazda 6.

Porsche is ranked #32 of 32, the worst cars in the world, but I find it hard to believe their whole fleet required more repairs than my last BMW.

it depends who you ask but Porsche rates as usually much more reliable than the VAG or BMW. As far as VAG vs BMW I think its complicated and a roll of the dice. BMW usually have the reputation to be reliable albeit expensive to maintain. Audi is just more of the unexpected failures.

Today, we know the truth, the repairpal database has been compiling millions of actual repair records from millions of mechanics, since 2017. Porsche ranks dead last of all 32 tracked manufactures. BMW is 30th. Audi is 28th. Toyota, BTW, is not that great in 7th, behind all Korean brands. Honda ranks #1.

@@FFE-js2zp very interesting!! Still though its useful to note the residual values at say 3 and 5 years. It may not be part of the repair costs but it matters. Historically, some Porsche have only appreciated in value and this is going back 40 years although Porsche owners put very little miles on them. Is the thing merely an appliance or is it an investment? Toyota and Lexus win here vs Hyundai. I have a Honda now. 90k miles. No major repairs. A window switch needs replacement and the door "clickers" on one side. But being a Civic I felt compelled to spend over 2500 on little modifications mainly on comfort, meaning seats, custom seat height spacers, noise insulation, leather material and foam. They make these cars for like one age group (19-29) and they are substantially poor in terms of NVH and comfort.

The new B9 in the S5 is literally the same exact engine in the S4 and SQ5. How can one be super reliable but the rest are not?

I think the rs3's engine is going to be on the more reliable side. That engine has been with Audi for 20+ years. If anything it's a bit of a dinosaur for them by comparison, but it was the engine of choice in their early rally days because of its tunability. Personally, I'd prefer to buy an engine that a manufacturer has been making for years and years over something they just released. They have had way more time to iron out the kinks with it, and the 5 cylinder 2.5 has been with VW and AUDI for ages.

BMW also managed to screw up some of the Mini engineering - the cam chains particularly are not up to the job (on some models at least) and the VVT is a duff design which should have never got off the ground. Would be interesting to know if they've sorted this out on the later/latest models

Exactly what I said, they don't need to afford a new one now, just to get one on PCP and pay the depreciation only, they never "own" them anymore as in almost all cases they never make the balloon payment at the end because they don't have it, so they never actually own the car, just have to hand it back to use as deposit for another PCP deal. I know several people stuck in that particular trap... In the UK over 90% of new cars are "purchased" on lease or PCP. The "owners" don't "own" them at all! Ironically it's the people who buy them at 3 or 4 years old after they leave the PCP and end up on the forecourts that can actually afford to "buy" them outright a lot of the time!

The lower Audi models like the A3 are more reliable, as the MQB platform is more mature (introduced in 2012) and is shared with many VW models like the Golf which means they have had a ton of time with a huge sample size to work out most of the kinks. Compare that to S5/S7 which are newer platforms with bigger engines on cars with less sales.

my 2008 328xi was an absolute money pit. Literally to replace the oil pan on that car, they have to hoist the engine out. When I changed spark plugs, I literally had to remove 6 different components to get to them. I feel like most of what you pay for is labor costs when maintaining a BMW. I had a jetta VR6 with more miles that held up much better than that car did. I just bought an Audi so fingers crossed

😂😂 Absolutely. I just got an '17 IS300 and I don't get what all the complaints are about the lexus "lack of performance". I'm 32 and have to drive my kid around to soccer practice and school. Are there grown ass men still out here tying to street race? It's got more power than my previous Mercedes C class so if anything I traded up. I'll take reliability over a 15% boost in performance.

@@sexytopramen I've had a Lexus IS300 in the past. Reliability has been great. Ride is quiet, I have an Audi S3 now and it's just more engaging and handles better. They both serve their purpose. I'm 29 now with no kids though so maybe in a couple of years I'll be back to Lexus 😂

Same question I have. He knocked the S5 but didn't say why. In fact all he did was compliment it. He also complimented the A4s which share the same platform as the A/S/RS5 so it doesn't add up.

From my European / Eastern European perspective his isn't exactly a lineup that makes sense for most people - a car got to be a universal (station wagon) - Avant and Touring models in case of Audi and BMW, or a hatch back. 4x4... Well, yes, it makes sense _sometimes_ here during our winters, but most of the time it's not needed. I mean, it's for commuting, not for showing off. Sure it's different here also because Germany is nearby, it's not a luxury import from overseas. 😆

Marco BMW or any German cars were square boxes in design until they got together with Italian car designers in the early to mid 80's then they really took off. 80200 miles on my 2015 650i gran coupe. Been extremely reliable. Replaced fuel injectors and hfpp while under warranty at 43000. I sent 1 dme to have mosfit repaired paid 450.00. That’s the only repairs other then general maintenance. I love my bmw it’s a Cadillac/corvette in one.

Anything with the b58 inline 6 is bullet proof. I’d avoid all others same with Audi , 3.0T(super charged) is legendary. Ppl gotta learn how to shop power trains not seat colors lol. Own a 2022 340i and before this I had an s4 with 185k miles with the 3.0t. Both very fun, very reliable but KEEP UP WITH BASIC MAINTENANCE.

I don’t know if I’m right but from a lot of Audi threads. And what I learn the only reason most Audis missfire during cold start up is to heat the cat up faster and warm the engine up. That’s what I seen but still hard to believe unless a Audi tech told me so

I suspect it's a deal with the dealership to get publicity. The Beamer, Benz, and Audi sell themselves (based on perceptions). It doesn't matter if these cars are unreliable; are costly to repair. Notice the comments from the posters who claim to have (they may have them, I don't know) German cars. Their comments have very little to do about reliability, cost-repair efficiency, or the efficacy of a perceived "superior" product. For them, it's all about the image and "the cars are fun to drive".

I should also add that your comment about increasing the frequency of oil changes should help reliability smacks of a complete lack of logic. Better change it twice as often as the factory says you should change it? Have you ever had an oil analysis done?

Everyone knows that he is right. Especially in a cold environment, cold starts are going to introduce more fuel into the oil during cold start-up. Sure oils are better today but then you have pollution and oil dilution with fuel due to direct injection. Sure oils are better but what with most engine turbocharged, the heat does affect the oil as well. Long intervals are likely not catastrophic but will reduce longevity at hi mile marks.
