I have owned 4 bmws over the past 20+ years. 1999, 2003, 2007, & 2010. The 99 3 series caught fire randomly and owed me nothing when it died after owning for about 7 years. The 07 528 had severe vanos problems, oil leaks, and a nasty temper but i knew it's mood and learned how to get around cold stalls, etc. I hit a deer and no one on earth would tell me it was worth fixing. I had to sell it for parts. The 03 was given to me and I drove it for about a year. Every light on the dash was on. Misfires like crazy and still ran. In the end, sold for parts. Mechanics wouldn't work on it and just kept saying to get rid of it. Leaked oil like the 07. Bought the 2010 528xi exactly 5 years ago and it drove like a dream. BUT! Blew hot air from the AC, constantly adding coolant, major sludge in the oil in the last couple years and mechanics just accused me over and over of not driving it far enough or not changing the oil enough-- and I always changed it below the 5000 mile mark. Infamous lifter tick. Attitude after attitude from mechanics who just made shit up every time i brought it in. Got an oil change last week after bringing it in for ticking... the mechanic said all bmws are pieces of shit and refused to work on suspension. It needed tie rod and, bushings, struts, and brakes. Refused to do anything but the oil change saying it would die from the ticking. Within 2 days of doing the oil change, the low pressure warning of death came on. I guarantee it was due to that oil change because it never came on before. I was in route to work and the whole thing died because I couldn't pull over. Bright it to new mechanic and all he did was say the oil was sludge and not to bother fix it. "The engine is toast." Funny-- right before it "died" it still ran like a dream, smooth as silk. But the mechanics ALL REFUSED to help and spend the time finding the problem. I heard back from bmw corporate who told me there's an open recall for pcv valve heater. Symptoms of that part are exactly what was happening to it: oil sludge, misfiring, etc. My search is on for a Mercedes. The question will be, am I getting into more hot water? BMWs are the tightest, heaviest, most sturdy feeling cars you'll ever drive. Smooth as silk, fast and quick to respond. I idolize them. But alas, I may be forced to stop at 4. My heart is broken. I have one more payment to make on what I have now, and nothing to show for it.

I love how you focus on the trade-offs, that neither is perfect and each has its strengths. My main takeaway from this (correct me if I'm wrong) is that as long as you focus on which particular models are reliable, e.g., BMW with inline 6 (except maybe N54!!) over 4 cylinder and V8, and Mercedes S-class or E-class, not C-class and avoiding AMG 63/43, THEN while the maintenance will be pricey, it won't be a nightmare. In particular, I liked your comment about how BMW feels more solid. I did test drives of both BMW and Mercedes last year (purchased m340i as a result), and there was something that annoyed me about the Mercedes (C300 and AMG C43) that I couldn't put my finger on. Your use of the word "solid" nails down that difference for me. Mercedes wasn't obviously bad, I just really liked the feel of the BMW more.

Well, well... O.K., I'm living in Germany, and I used to have and still have a BMW and a Mercedes-Benz today, a 1997 SLK 230 (R170, first built quarter, still NO signs of corrosion although for the first 14 years no home garage), now 152 tkm and a 2015 X3 3,0d (Made in Alabama!), now 135 tkm on the clock. Prior to the X3, I had a 2012 MB C250 CDi 4matic, that was later used by my dad and sold just some month ago at 155 tkm (all cars first owner). It looks like the North American customers buy way more bigger engines, but I'm absolutely sure that we are way much tougher on our cars than anybody else: Immagine, it's late evening, e.g. 8 p.m., the meeting is over and you want to go home with 400 km Autobahn ahead. Traffic has already calmed down, most of the trucks are already at the parking places along the street. What are you doing? Certainly, accelerate the car to a speed between 160 ... 200 km/h, lock the cuise and go. 400 km at that speed range. That's what we have these cars for (until a speed limit will be imposed by the next government). Long-haul business drivers prefer the 3 l staight 6 cyl turbo-Diesels for their torque characteristics (like a V8 gasoline engines) and their low gas consumption. To compare these cars: The C250 was a super-sturdy car and so is the X3. The C250 had more wear on the brakes and slightly higher maintenance costs, the X3 is absolutely sensational: last service at 120 tkm for € 520,-. At 20 tkm a control unit of the park distance control had to be exchanged (warranty) and at 105 tkm the pump of the lumbar support in the drivers seat had to be exchanged (€ 315,-), but NOTHING else, just regular maintenance and brake wear. The C250 had some problem with the digital radio and the safety belt was squeaking (warranty), at 142 tkm the control unit in the adaptive cruise control had to be changed (€ 764,-), but that's it. In other words, if you have such a car in Germany, the running costs are way much less than for a Volkswagen (!!!). Regarding the interior, unfortunately the smaller BMWs (up to 5 series) are looking & feeling cheap, while C-class MBs are generally made more or less looking & feeling like S-class (not the previous one, but the new one and the old ones). The problem with BMW is, you can use these cars for some time, e.g. 10 or 12 years, but then there is a point where you don't get spares anymore (approx. around 14 ... 16 years). Then, it's over. For my 24 year old SLK, I still get all mechanical, electrical and body parts from the dealer work shop over night, just for some very specific (uncritical) options I have to search the web. Moreover, at MB you can apply for a discount card and get 20% of spares if the car is elder than 7 years. One day, I had a Japanese customer over and he complaint that he can't get exterior trim parts for his 1981 MB SL (R107). I took him to the local dealer where everything was on stock and really reasonable priced. In other words, if you want to keep a car for more than 20 years, MB is the better bet. If you just want to use it for some 3 ... 6 years, it's a question of taste, nothing else.

I had 2 BMW, 1MB, and 1MB currently. You are absolutely right about the 4 cylinder engine. I had a 2012 528i. That was the first year they came out with the Twin Turbo 4 for 528. My cousin bought 2011 528 that had the naturally aspirated inline 6 with less power. He still drives it today. I traded mine in long ago. It blew white smoke, and it went back to the shop for a month for repair. Dealer basically told me they don’t know what’s wrong. BMW factory had to send someone to diagnose the problem. I didn’t quite understand, but how it was explained was there was a oil seal leak in the turbo. It went back again for the same problem, but this time it took a week dealer was able to fix it this time. I felt I had it with this new engine, trade it in. I had a 2008 BMW Z4 Coupe that I really regret selling it. My wife hate it. Sport tuned suspension makes the rude rough, and 2 seater; ultimately my wife made me trade that for a MB GL350. You are absolutely right about Diesel engine. Today’s Diesel engine is not the old Diesel engine. Bluetec sucks. Again I traded for a GLS 450 now. Hope this Alabama Rust Bucket holds. So far so good. Also living in California, we don’t have too much rust issue.

@@unom5579 The main one was the two week engine rebuild due to the global VANOS bolt head shear recall on all straight 6s. A master tech had to fish the bolt heads out off the oil pan and replace all the bolts in the VANOS assembly on top of the engine. I asked how the bolt heads migrated from top to bottom and what damage was done. No answer. The next big one was the starter electrical fire that destroyed the ECU, the fuse panel, all the door windows, locks, and battery. Then there was the coolant system fail from several leaks dumping all the coolant when the pump came on. That pump has failed only twice in 120K miles, I'm lucky. All the LCD screens failed. The seats are all disintegrating. The stabilty system failed. 3 of 4 M wheels had 4-5 inch hair line cracks through the rims. The AC compressor failed. The convertible top failed and the fabric needs to be replaced. The rear main seal was replaced and is leaking oil again. The manual transmission failed plus two clutches. There are about 10 oil leaks from the pan, the intake seals are bad, and the OFH needs both seals replaced again. The VANOS solenoids were replaced, and there are several vacuum leaks and the tin and plastic FMIC failed. The boost solenoid and sensor failed and the is still a major fluttering boost leak. Thhe rear three ignition coils failed from internal rust. All the cardboard cladding sloughed off the bottom of the car due to oil saturation. All four struts are deflated. The battery header failed twice. I'm missing about half of it, but thats a start off the top of my head. I lost count at $60,000 in repairs, it needs maybe $30K more. It cost $46K new in 2011.

Cars you probably should avoid are the AMG versions. They are more expensive to repair and their is more chance they have been thrashed by previous owners. Parts aren’t as prevalent for these either. My E550 is pretty close to the same motor without the boy racer touch. If you are in the market for one of these make sure you get it checked properly before purchasing. Get somebody with an ODB scanner to check car for codes etc and check service history for any recalls before getting emotionally attached to the car.

I mostly own high mileage and older BMW and Mercedes (also Volvo, Lincolns and Lexus/Toyota) I switched from BMW to Mercedes because there are less issues with Mercedes compared to BMW. Note that BMW added more electronic parts in their engine and those mostly fail once you are over 80k miles (or earlier) BMW has the DISA valve, Valvetronic added in to the engine which requires maintenance, plastics on the engine and very weird battery management system (why register or program a battery during replacement!) the 4 cylinder turbos are also junk and BMW is a newcomer to turbos (they redesigned it several times)... less complex, the lesser the issues.

I have a 2011 BMW 328i Xdrive Sedan. First off, it's not a 'lower quality' BMW that this guy seems to think the 3 series are. It was voted in the top 3 luxury Sedans of 2011. Second off, It has 120.000 miles on it, and I have not had to do any significant repairs at all. Everything is still working in tip-top shape. I am not sure what this guy is smoking, but it's been the best car I have ever owned.

I find that every Benz I have purchased in the last 10 years have been more reliable than the BMW counterparts. Not sure why. The head bolt problem was well documented. The only thing that would go wrong is the seals on the air shocks. My Cls lost 3 shocks over a period of about a year, worn out at the 10 year mark. Nothing has worn out on my E class yet (touch wood) however it’s done 60k kms so far.

For some reason my E46 m3 that has 92,000 mile had many replacements from the plastic front cowling side moldings don’t last they end up degrading and I keep it inside the garage. They end up brittle. I replaced the starter at 72k power lock driver side at 80k. It’s the most costly repair maintenance. I had a 2001 is300 no plastics or power lock failure till 265k miles. I’m still baffled on quality. Yes I do love my M3.

I have a new Audi that I hope will hold up for me. I bought all of my cars new, and I drive about 6k miles per year. If you are going to drive 20k miles a year, a Lexus is probably a better choice.

Big weaknesses in Mercedes are its internal such buttons, handles, love rusting and air submissions, BMW weaknesses are Oil Leaks, Turbo, Cooling System, Water Pumps, Thermostat, Fuel Pumps, Timing Chain etc. In hot climate countries such Middle East, Mercedes is much better than BMW which has many issue with Cooling System, Water Pumps and Thermostat .

I like your videos but don't quite fully agree with this one, probably as I'm slighty biased:) I own fourth BMW 3 series, currently f31 330d Xdrive Msport for 3 years, had egr cooler replaced recently by BMW service as a factory recall action, other than that nearly fault free 70k miles. Previous were e46 and e90 all 3 liter diesels. Long time ago, e28, e30, e39 and e60 over decade ago. Except dpf problems in e90, I have never experienced any major issues tbh. I have to admit, that I'm not economical on preventative maintenance, but I'm actually quite heavy footed. I wonder if I'm just lucky or my maintenance plans are correct. I'm also trying to avoid problematic engines mentioned by you as well, that definitely helps. I'm not trying to say that they were faultless, things do break down but none of them ever left me stranded on the side of the road. My mates who owned or own Mercedes or Audi, reporting me much more serious and expensive issues with their cars. Maybe is a fact that I try no to keep cars for much more than 100k miles. Next one gonna be g21 340i in year or two as World started do stigmatise diesels some time ago and electric aren't for me due to the ridiculous low real world range.

Why is my 2014 bmw 328 series x drive behaving with the reliability of a Toyota corolla. I now have 243,000 km and I replaced a navigation screen and oil sensor under warranty and some pulley belts with the extended warranty. I replaced at my cost the waste gate actuator at 218,000 km and I just replaced my drivers side sun visor at my cost. I did replace the oil way before they wanted me to and I don’t accelerate like a race car driver which may have helped not overheating the turbo? not sure if this is correct but I I have come to love my 3 series - hopefully I continue to experience this type of reliability since I paid off this car 2 years ago and I don’t mind saving that 800 do,Lars per month . I am almost on the verge of getting the 440 coupe in San Remo green or Artic race blue but I I just keep saving the extra 800 or 900 bucks every month I don’t have a problem with my old sweet 3 series . It’s crazy how we we get emotionally attached to our cars.
