If a car costs 50-100K new, can you be really surprised that it might cost a little bit more to repair than a car that cost less? I spent $400.00 on an alternator for my 2003 BMW X5 last week. It's a big 'ol heavy 150A thing that is actually water cooled. I'm not the least bit surprised it costs what it does, nor will I complain about it. It stands to reason that it should cost more than the run-of-the-mill 100A alternator in my old 1988 Jeep Cherokee. When you consider production numbers, type, and design it makes sense.

Several MB models over the years (over a span of 4 decades actually) are known to do this, the chain drives the camshafts and results in total engine destruction. Martin Lavoie what about the effort in engine repairs? The parts are usually the easy part. It’s the time and effort to fix that’s upsetting. My Colorado VW 1.8t got to 330k but was smoking due to so many hot-cold cycles(many sub zero starts) and running the engine on low oil at times.

The reliability is skewed because high-performance cars are typically unreliable. Things like the S63 and AMG GT. The C Class and GLS to name a few have above average reliability. They are very easy to diagnose as long as you have the equipment. They do cost more but its worth it to some people. You do need to find a good specialty mechanic with the proper diagnostic software package and parts suppliers though. Buy an off lease with 30K something Kilometers and keep until it starts breaking down. Comes out pretty inexpensive.

matt taylor so buy an expensive car ( for a used car) and sell it when it’s value is less of a Honda. Great tip! Lol
@TassieLorenzo5 жыл бұрын
I must disagree, cars like the 3.0L and 3.2L Acura NSX are just as reliable as a Honda Accord. 0-60mph in 5.0sec, which was quite acceptable for a sportscar in 1990 when it came out (rather outclassed by 2005 when it ended production though). Maybe if Mercedes cars weren't so heavy, they could achieve high performance with smaller engines! ;)

I'm taking about more than issues. I'm taking about the experience. Yeah, the E46 has Subframe soft spots (which, if you want your wife to get rid of hers, show her the cracks where the rear Subframe mounts are... And then give it to me because it's totaled and worthless now...) But I mean it's the last bmw that's actually a driver's car. Too much luxury and too much tech have ruined newer bmws.

Also now BMW South Africa are selling water pipes from china which started failing after 2 years whereas the original was swopped out as preventative maintenance and hadnt failed yet after 18years. It was marked made in Romania, the markings on the new pipe were not the same and i guessed China but BMW South Africa refused to answer me. Now i buy german made parts which are not from OEM BMW because the OEM BMW sell chinese crap. The new F30 do not drive well and the 320i is not 6 cylinders but a 4cylinder turbo and hill climbing it has to change down a gear..pathetic. BMW sure know how to ripoff people.

@@michaelbamber4887 In US BMW claims that you never have to change transmission fluid. My friend bought a brand new 3 series BMW, after driving 10K miles, his oil change percentage was still above 50%. I told him to change oil. He took the car to BMW. They told him that they won't change oil on it till the computer tells them to, on top of that they told him that if he tried to change oil somewhere else, they will void the warranty. The first oil change happened a little over 19K miles. I know factory oil has special additives that help the new engine break in but 19K miles is ridiculous. Try keeping it for 20/30 years like a Lexus or 40/50 years like those 70's mercs. BMW and Mercedes start to disintegrate after 10 years because of the cheap plastic components and their wiring looms aren't great either. They are also over dependent on computers which also fail regularly. BMW and Mercedes used to make great cars that lasted, now they are way below Japanese cars.
