Overview
BMW's entry-level SUV, the X1, has been a favorite of ours for some time thanks to its agile handling, eager nature, and practical shape. The 2023 model has received a complete redesign that looks to be a comprehensive upgrade over last year's model, with improvements to its chassis, powertrain, and interior. A new 241-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is under the hood and is paired with standard all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Unlike its main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLB-class, the X1 remains a two-row SUV, but its slightly larger exterior dimensions have translated to extra space inside the cabin according to BMW. Speaking of the interior, it's updated with a more modern design and the latest tech features, including the brand's iDrive 8 infotainment setup.
What's New for 2023?
BMW has redesigned the X1 SUV for 2023. A more powerful four-cylinder engine resides behind a bolder dual-kidney grille. Its larger exterior dimensions promise slightly more interior space for passengers and cargo than the previous generation offered.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
xDrive28i: $40,095
This time around there's only one trim to choose from, and it comes with standard all-wheel drive; the front-wheel drive sDrive28i version isn't continuing on into the new generation. It's possible a higher-performance M-badged model could be in the wings, but for now, the X1 gets only an M Sport equipment package that adds exclusive visual cues and an adaptive M suspension. The xDrive28i comes with plenty of standard equipment, but we'd suggest adding the optional Convenience package, which includes keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Like the outgoing model, the 2023 X1 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but the new model boasts 241 horsepower, 13 more than before. All-wheel drive is standard this time around and the X1 also receives a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The X1 xDrive28i we tested, shot to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Its redesigned suspension improves handling and stability, which makes the X1 a fun drive for twisty roads. An optional M Sport package-don't get this confused with an M model, which may come later-adds performance-enhancing features such as an adaptive suspension system and steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. The M Sport package also adds more aggressively bolstered seats, a unique steering wheel, and several sporty-looking exterior tweaks.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA estimates that the 2023 X1 should deliver 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, which is slightly better than the 2022 model in both metrics. When we have a chance to test the new X1 on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, we'll update this story with the results. For more information about the X1's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The 2023 model is slightly longer, taller, and wider than the outgoing 2022 X1, delivering only minor increases in passenger space as the previous model was already roomy for its size. The interior design is more modern this time around with a toggle-switch shift lever, a floating center console, an all-digital dashboard, and designer elements such as textured speaker grilles. All models come with dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting, and a power liftgate. A panoramic sunroof is part of the optional Convenience package while heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are standalone options.

I like the back of the X1 soo much.Fresh, exciting, can't stop gazing at. And the interior simple amazing. I just think that the front desighn doesn't suit with the back. Boring, predictable, kind old. But who I'm I to judge?

Aufgrund der Cockpitgestaltung würde ich nie ein X1 fahren, kaufen. Das Brett als Cockpit ist fürchterlich. Ansonsten ein tolles Auto.

My New X1 M sport 23 D has been back 3 times, had the front camera changed (by the interior mirror) its 4 months old, apparently this is a common problem

Samochody SUV od BMW to stylistyczne pokraki (ten jest nieco ładniejszy, nieco ładniejsze są też coupé), ponadto marka ta źle mi się kojarzy ze względu na image większości właścicieli mentalnie prostacko-nowobogackich (to jest reguła nie tylko u nas). Technicznie one są na pewno dobre ale nigdy bym nie chciał jeździć bmw (zwłaszcza starym, które u nas przeważają) aby nie być postrzeganym przez otoczenie jako burak.

Motore ok....interni troppa plastica, confort purtroppo per il prezzo assai insufficiente, fatto test drive...deluso, ma del resto le tedesche degli ultimi anni l'asticella l'hanno alzata solo sul prezzo....peccato!

It’s really very nice looking car. I insist: nice looking design car. But some design solutions are not the best for a day a day driving. I mean: The driver elbow’s box it is badly designed: really, really small and only opens from the driver’s side !!! The ultra modern infotainment screen is ok, but the readability of the info for the driver is not at all easy and quick at it should be at a glance. I was at the dealer’s and strongly considering to buy it obeying my sensibility to design. After a few days thinking, and some reviews, I decided to stay attached to Mazda or Volvo options. I have to say, my MB C200 2012, has much better and logical space solutions and accessibility p. ex. to the elbows box, easy to open both sides.

Боже, как отстает в новациях и технологиях БМВ и не только немецкие и японские производители автомобилей. Хвастаться подсветкой салона, камерой 360 градусов и навигацией в 2023г это треш , а еще надпись на лед фарах BMW это зачем? Дизайн кузова на любителя, я видел как на самом деле умеют работать немецкие дизайнеры BMW, это фантастика.
