Went to several bmw dealerships trying to compare best prices. The X5 is a bit out of my price range so I was looking at the X1, X2, and the X3. Right off the bat, when you see an X1 and X2 side by side, the X2 looks significantly smaller. My first car was a 2014 mazda 3 hatchback and I have to say, it didn't look too far off from it. The height of the X2 just looks and feels too low for my liking, it looks more like a hatchback than a crossover. Whereas the X1 looks more like an SUV than a crossover. Sitting in the backseat of the X1 and X2 was a night and day difference and is pretty much what sold me. Then I compared the X1 and the X3 together. The X3 is slightly taller but not by much, I'd say less than an inch if that, but what really distinguishes the 2 cars is the extra 10" of length on the X3 than the X1. When looking at them side by side, the X1 looks shorter and stubbier. But this is where the catch comes... just as I was about to sign the papers on the X3, I got in both back-seats one last time. I noticed that the X1 and the X3 felt almost identically spacious on the inside and especially in the back seat. The dealer confirmed with me that the cabin space in the X1 is just about the same as the X3, and actually ironically the X1 has slightly better legroom in the backseat than the X3, the X3 has such a slight amount of more room in the trunk that I hardly noticed, but I did notice 100% that my legs felt a bit more free in the X1. The dealer told me the biggest differences between the X1 and X3 are the vast amount of options you can load the X3 with as opposed to the X1, as well as the 3 different engines you can choose from whereas the X1 only has the 28i as an option. He told me that if I was planning to get the base engine X3 (which I was) it wouldn't be far off from getting the X1. I wasn't looking for anything fast (I'm coming from a 340i) I just wanted something practical and fuel efficient. This car checked off all the boxes. There's a few things I definitely wish the X1 had, like blind spot detection, ventilated seats, and the Harman Kardon surround sound system (X1 only has standard Harman Audio as an extra for $1000) - so that being said there's definitely a few things I'm going to miss with my 340i like the speed and the ear piercing audio, even the dakota leather seats. But sadly my 340i is now out of warranty, and after seeing the check engine light pop up a few times, I'm not ready to cough up thousands of dollars in services, and would rather start fresh again with the 4 year warranty for my peace of mind. Overall the X1 is a fantastic car for people who are looking for a small (but spacious) SUV that can fit all of your belongings, and take you on adventures at ease without breaking your wallet on gas.

@@ismaelgadyal5372 Actually no it isn't. It has many very annoying flaws. The windscreen is very small and the passenger side windscreen wiper doesn't clean the top left hand corner leaving a blind spot next to the pillar. When driving in comfort mode on a road with corners its verging on dangerous! Move the steering wheel a few mm and it moves a couple of metres. My theory is that I only have the 17 inch alloys and not 19 inches. And then there is the key fob. The bezel is flush with the buttons and with the key in my pocket in jeans my tailgate opened itself 4 times in the first week of ownership. Had to buy a rubber cover so the buttons could not be activated accidentally. Phoned BMW to complain and they denied all knowledge. As soon as I googled... Tailgate opening accidentally there were hundreds of posts online and going back to 2006! Also if you search BMW key fob cover on Amazon there are hundreds to choose from. Why is there a market for them if the fob is not a problem. Raising the bezel a few mm would fix this but they have not done it. No I would not buy another one. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😡

My theory is that the suspension and steering rack are designed for the M3 version and therefore with smaller wheels a tiny input is scary. Of course you have a way round this. By driving in Eco Mode around town or City and select Sport mode for the open road. A key fob cover costs 6 quid from Amazon. Are you thinking of buying one mate?

Harley Robertson it looks good, but it’s expensive for what it is: built on a cheap mini FWD platorm, cheap transmission and suspension. If you want a small suv you don’t have a choice anyway. The 5 series is much more advanced, the 3 series and x3 are still very good.

Bit nerdy but the main reason for the enlarged fuel filler cap is because it houses both Diesel & Adblue filler caps - unlike my X5 where Adblue is under the bonnet

Area of Interest even number are the sportier versions of the odd odd numbers. Its not based on size. E.g. x6 is the sportier version of x5, x4 is the sportier version if x3.....

Owen Simpson it’s built on the cheap mini platform like the x1, except this is a bit smaller, but some people like the badge and care more about how it looks. I like how it looks but no thanks. It’s practical though but there are much cheaper options if you want that sort of car.

The idea behind badge's strange location as you pointed out Mat, is actually an inspiration applied first to BMW 3.0 CSi Coupé (1974 model). In order for the badge to look aligned with the road while the car accelerates, it has been place at an angle of 3 degrees counter clockwise!

Just had one of these as a courtesy car and couldn't BELIEVE how incredibly harsh and fidgety the ride was on the m-sport chassis and also the horrendous noise from the 225/40 R18 Goodyear tyres! (It felt too stiffly sprung and under-damped for good measures!?). So glad you mentioned exactly these two issues - thought I was either going mad or being too unfair on an otherwise lovely car!

No, not for me. I'll avoid it, not compelling. I think you should be pointing out that a higher centre of gravity means a firmer ride or steering response like a boat. Cars like that tend to try and shake your head off. Wouldn't a Passat Wagon have more room, more space, more performance and cost less?

I second Claire - I’ve done around 25,000km in the 3 series and around 6,000 in the previous X1 (and around 1000km in the new X1), and the X wins hands down, because I find it awkward to get in and out of (I’m 1.95cm tall). It’s also a lot easier to get a kid in and out of their seat thanks to the height, but it’s not so tall that you’d have issues in some car parks like you would with an X3 even. I’m rather keen on an X2 if I finally decide to buy instead of renting.
