I have driven the X7 M50d for a day and i said exactly the same! This car is so over engineered and commercially seen it should not exist. But yet it does and it is brilliant, allready sold out for this year which explains the massive succes it has allready proclaimed in the US and China.

I just ordered an X7 M50i for delivery in November so is available in the UK - A Petrol V8 producing 530bhp, the same one in the M850i

What were your expectations? what is it really like?

@@orvillethomas4464 i wanted to get the M50i, but it was hard to get and the dealership only had one with a v8. Before that I was driving the 750i, so I traded in that for the only available X7 50i. We also got an M760i. Comparing it to the actual 7 series, it’s not a 7 suv. It’s a bit more noisy, there is more plastic that replaced the leather, and steering wheel is not as smooth. I like it, it’s sounds perfect from the exhaust (it has the sport package), it’s big, it’s comfortable, and I love the way it looks. We can tune it to be as like the M50i (it’s exactly the same engine N63), but we are okay with it. When I want to go fast, I just take the M760. In my opinion, compared to the what is out there (US), it’s a decent deal for what it offers. We were looking at Cadillac, GLS, QX80, Volvo, Audi, but the X7 offered more than all of those.

Rory's contributions to Carfection are getting better! Unlearning Top Gear and showing some excellence in his reviews. Great work Mr Reid. Unbelievable that the "Off Road Package" is an optional extra! Tells you that BMW doesn't expect this SUV to ever go off road, not even slightly. Electric folding seats is neat but really just confirms how lazy the American market is! To be fair, I said that about the electric boot years back too. It does, however, make sense as even manufacturer has different ways of folding those seats and when you hire a car you just want to get in and drive. But BMW do come at the bottom of reliability surveys. Great when they're working, but fragile.

Love your reviews. You are an excellent presenter. Top gear tried to change you. These calm and cool reviews are who you are. Top gear tried to make you have the punchyness of a teen ager which isn't you. Keep it up. Excellent job. The problem was with top gears producers not it's presenters. Other than one particular host

Justin Davison sounds like you got a few too many hugs. He wasn’t good on top gear hence why he isn’t on it anymore. I’ll admit new top gear sucks because they try to replicate their old successes. But at some point you have to take responsibility. If you knock a vase over do you blame the vase maker for using ceramic not metal?

Rory may never be my favorite presenter, but he's at the best I've seen of him here. Natural, fluid, and with some great descriptive writing. Similarly, the X7 is totally not my kind of car, but I have to respect it...as my friend put it "don't think of the X7 as a Q7, GLS, or Navigator competitor...think of the X7 as a cut-rate Bentley Bentayga competitor." I'm inclined to agree.

1:04 I expected the grill to come up with the hood like on my E46 M3, but it turns out the X7's grill cannot physically be lifted by any human, therefore they had to keep it stationary and separate it from the hood.

Good review Rory! I mean... I'd have the grille painted matt black and the rest in a fairly dull colour, but apart from that this car makes much more sense than the rest of the X-range. It is properly practical, properly engineered to work on and off road, and actually isn't as bad looking as the rest of the X-range too as it just says "I am a BMW palace and I don't care" rather than trying to have a coupe roof line and ending up with the biggest ugliest booty on a modern car (I'm looking at you X6).

I have driven the petrol M sports version and it is gorgeously engineered. The roar sound is great and overall this car is superb. I still need to test drive the other brands but BMW X7 is a contender for me.

The honesty. The beautiful honesty of this channel… I adore the many compliments of the X7 overall, but the best description truly is “The Middle Finger on Wheels” intentional or not. That feeds into the stereotype of a BMW driver (More truth than theory), but sweet-tap-dancing-Christ… What a feat of engineering. From the viewpoint of an X7 M50i owner, this is an absolute anomaly of a machine. Speed, agility, comfort, luxury… I’ll swoon for days. Sue me. Even at the price point, the competition is scarce and archaic.

Kinda seems like a good reason to me, to be honest, really, it's not a "this car should never exist!" more rather, "I could buy a house for that" I quite like the fact that these cars exist, but I still also quite enjoy saying "f##k that's expensive, I could buy a fiesta and a bungalow for that!" (It's must be an age thing, probably, or something, I forget, I should probably go and find a que to complain about, or join it and moan about how expensive stamps are these days, when in Britain, and all that, know?)

To those of us who want a practical and spacious family 7 seater, the options are so limited. Audi Q7, not that much trunk (boot) space when all 7 seats are used and the two back seats are just after thoughts with no AC and low seating position of the third row same goes for the good old GLE 7 seater. Until now, the XC90 has always been the bench mark when it comes to practically, spaciousness and a third row with AC and storage compartments while also providing a respectable space for the trunk (boot). & Gowns ups can sit in the third row!! Seems like the X7 might join the exclusive club while beating its german rivals on practically (getting in and out of the third row which is a disastrous and no kid will ever be able to do that heavy lifting and the awful low seating position in the Benz or Audi). Respect for bimmer for mixing luxury and spaciousness for big families. Let’s see a comparison for all 7 seaters some time soon.

Great video. But the "Does it need to exist" question...at least in the US, it's clearly "yes". These things are selling like hotcakes, way outselling the GLS, and it's almost impossible to get one if you don't like the 1 or 2 they happen to have on the lot. Who knew there was so much pent-up demand for $100k SUVs.
