The steering wheel stitching is green and blue because those are the Alpina colours, on older models that theme was continued throughout the entire interior and it looks less out of place in those.

For those revisiting this review in 2024..As a XB7 owner a few things Doug got wrong and also things that have changed since this video came out. BMW did release M versions of the X7, i have driven both of them as well as the base non-M X7. The local BMW dealer has lent me them whenever ive had service. The X7m's are very stiff inside with standard BMW trim, they are fast, but they are focused on speed and handling. The standard X7 is comfortable, if a bit slow, with a somewhat cheap interior in my opinion. The Alpina is not an M car in any way, i am not sure why Doug kept comparing it to one. Alpina focuses on luxury, handling and power. The ride is softer than a X7m, the interior is better. It's an Autobahn cruiser in every way, and it's where the car really shines. Alpina is just such a special brand that is vastly unknown here in the USA. You get a car that gives you what you actually need versus the X7m, which while fast, is stiff...

I'm broke and cheap, but I think I read somewhere that Porsche, for example, is one of the most reliable brands, but once something finally DOES wear down it's usually expensive to repair. Most people can't afford to pay $100k+ on a new 911, but they might decide they can afford to pay less than half of that for a high mileage used one. The scenario I imagine is that the owner takes their worn down car to a mechanic and sees the luxury repair bill and thinks they're being scammed, so they only pay for some problems to be fixed. Once they've owned the car for 51 days the car violently and magnificently explodes because they ran out of oil a week ago. "Porsche.." they belch through charred crispy lips, "is unreliable."

1) Green is indeed a traditional Alpina color, along with the blue. Take a look at any Alpina from the 80s through today and you'll see it. 2) The shift buttons are traditional as well and go back to the days when BMW did not offer manual shifting on automatic transmissions, so Alpina used to put "+" and "-" buttons on the wheel to allow for it.

I can't speak to the 3rd row but 2nd row luxury leader is, without irony, Toyota's Chinese market Alphard, a $120,000 USD MPV. I saw it reviewed by a US and UK expat duo on the Wheelsboy channel. It is an absolutely insanely luxurious people mover. The 2nd row is like 2 seats in first class on an airline, complete with trays in the armrests.

Doug, your stuff is great and most of the insights are almost always spot on but comparing an Alpina to an M is blasphemy and is not supported by either car's driving dynamics or the history of either company. The M performance focuses on sports performance to keep the driver engaged and part of the pavement. The Alpina experience is a luxurious escape from those constrictions for drivers who have different priorities that don't include hearing loud exhaust noises or cornering on a timed track. In the US we were really able to first see this contrast in the M6 v. B6, where there are two vehicles with great stats on paper that drive nothing alike. The priorities of M and Alpina are different and this is reflected in the driving dynamics. Nor would any Alpina driver want an M X7 over the XB7 because comfort and luxury would be more important to those drivers over pure racing feel. A rare faux pas that I felt needed to be addressed.
