BMW Z3 Transmission/Differential Fluid Change

Thanks for this video! I have a ‘98 & I’m having the car rebuilt. Some people have horror stories about changing the transmission fluid, but it looks pretty straightforward to me.

Absolutely, the most difficult part was getting all that fluid back in but that was really just because it was tedious and a bit messy. If your not getting an oil bath are you really having fun anyway?

For what it's worth, I am just doing a transmission and differential oil change on my Z3 2.8 manual from year 2000 . It is fitted with a Torsen 25% lsd differential. The oil I am using for the differential is Amsoil Synthetic Severe Gear 75W/110 which appears to be the right oil for the Torsen lsd. For the gearbox, I am using Redline D4 ATF which is recommended on the "moment of ZED" youtube channel.

Each of mine had an aluminum gasket ring on them, I cleaned and reused.

Where did you place the jack stand in the front?

It's at the bolts where the back of the x-brace attaches.

I have a 5 speed manual Getrag transmission on my 97 1.9 and the dealer swears it takes regular ATF. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF on all my automatic vehicles but Im skeptical about using it on my Z3.

My service manual for the 96-98 vehicles suggests the same. The trans I have, ZF 5spd however has a label suggesting MTF LT1 oil, this trans is out of a MY 00. So at some point they changed, guess I would go off of the trans label. I don't have an owners manual to confirm anything. From what I see, the dealer is correct for your 97, if that's what the label says.

Hello. Is this a ZF 320Z gearbox?

Always remove fill cap first. Imagine removing the fluid, and then not be able to fill.

Hello, if you are referring to the transmission fill plug on the side, it is accessible and can be filled anytime. I just opted to fill a portion of the pan before reinstalling to save some time from having to hand pump the remaining fluid. The pump I had was messy and time consuming as you can see with the small portion I did have to fill after.

@@driventofailure I am referring to a great advice given on most videos on diff and transmission fluid changes. A seized fill plug would prevent refilling the diff or transmission, so ALWAYS check if fill plug can be unscrewed, before draining. A seized plug might need more than what you can do at home.

Wait you put fill it up from there? I thought there's a place to fill it up in the engine bay, I'm confused
