BMW Z4 vs Toyota Supra: It’s a bigger difference than a roof!

I just purchased a used 2020 Z4 and absolutely love it. I came from a Scion FR-S and although I found the latter to be a better drivers car the BMW is amazingly plush on the inside. The road noise with the top up or down is minimal. Truly great engineering. For the price you get an impractical entry level BMW that gets a lot of attention. You rarely see this generation in the wild.

I bought a 2020 Z4 30i this spring with only 9k on the odometer. Love it. The 4 banger has PLENTY of power. I almost never floor it. In sport plus, it will flat out get your attention. Also, the automatic transmission is tuned phenomenally. It's like it's reading my mind like I was shifting manually. Not just on the way up. It downshifts hard and fast when braking, and has the crackles and pops to go with it. Ridiculously fun car.

Purchased my 2020 Z4 in October of 2021. This was my retirement vehicle for myself. Considered the Supra but convertible was the deciding factor. The four cylinder makes more power than most would ever need and I'm happy with the purchase. A real head turner and I believe it appeals more to an older mature crowd .

I have had a Z4 2011, 2016 and now 2020. I love Z4 and always will. Though I hope that BMW returns the manual to Z4. I would buy one in a heartbeat!

Love that blue, wow. I went with the arctic white/magma red M40i. What an amazing car. I compare it to a Porsche 944s I had years ago that handled like crazy but felt underpowered. This car has the same impressive handling but over double the HP, so for me it's the perfect car, plus the luxury when you want it.

Wonderful car, I've had my 21 M40i for a few months now. The combination of fuel efficiency and speed make this an outstanding GT roadster. If someone is hung up on new price, look for CPO with low miles. The depreciation curve makes these great buys as a 2nd owner.

I’ve had the SDrive 30i for 3 years. Loved it - really a great engine for the lighter version of this car. But… replacing with another Z4 but the M40i - had a 2 series M40i and I miss that engine. This may be an irrational decision ! We’ll see. I dropped manual several years ago. Live in a large city and in & out of first gear is hard work. I would stay automatic. Personal choice. One of the cars i most enjoyed to drive was a 2010 beige inline6 Z4, the smoothness of that engine was addictive and i didn´t really cared much about the power output but mostly about the joy while driving. In this newer model i bet the 6cyl is just better but i guess some people would go straight for the 4cyl turbo and enjoy it regardless. Nice review and that car looks really nice indeed.

Great review man! I would 100% take the Z4 for all the reasons you've stated. The convertible top makes a huge difference too, in terms of having that sports car feel. When two cars are this mechanically similar and use the same powertrain, the average driver (who only drives 4/10 at most) really wouldn't notice a difference during regular driving. Needless to say, improving one's driving skills should always be the priority before considering upgrading their car.

What’s so difficult to understand? Union wants a 40% raise. If you add the extra benefits, it is estimated that U.S auto industry workers gets a 240% raise at about $130/hr salary. Guess how much they are paying workers in China. Oh and they can work extra hours instead of the 4 days a week that the union is asking.

As someone who learned to drive with a manual transmission and has owned multiple 4,5 and 6 speed manual transmission cars I find the argument for a manual transmission in the new Z4 to be a bit Neanderthal. When you spend 85% of your driving time in commuter traffic constantly shifting between 1st and 2nd gear becomes a pain. Very few, if any, drivers are more proficient than the auto in the Z4. It’s the same with the PDK in my Porsche. I’ve also grown tired of the comparisons with the Supra. The Z4 is exceptional enough to stand on it’s own merits , especially if you’ve actually driven or owned either. The comparisons seemed to come mostly from those who’ve done neither. If the collaboration between BMW and Toyota had not been publicized so robustly I doubt that there would’ve many, if any at all, who would’ve been able to draw any line of similarity between the cars.

@@hazardeur Agreed..but point of manual driving in city traffic is more a PITA than a fun driving experience for me....why after two Miatas...their replacement was a MINI Roadster S AT...paddle shifters provide the simulated shifting fun when appropriate.

Re: Avg speed. I too shocked how slow I drive on average. That is until I noticed all time is counted including auto-stop time at traffic lights and while waiting in drive-in bank teller lines. One can see the average speed drop while you wait.

I’ve always loved the Z4. That color combo is gorgeous. I would almost consider trading my Miata in for one, but I think I’d miss having a manual. I think if I ever trade up it would be for a gently used 718 GTS with a manual.

M, How are you holding up with the hurricane and the earthquake? Hope you're safe and sound, and away from the hurricane's path. As for the cars, the way I see it, it's a case of "aesthetics vs refinement". IMHO the Supra is the better looking of the two and has the full support of the aftermarket tuning scene, while the Z4 is the more refined one. One thing to consider though is the new M2, at a starting price of $63k it's only a matter of time before you start stepping on its toes while building a Z4.

Thanks for checking in, Amro. Luckily, being out by the coast, that helped a bit as the cone turned further inland and hit San Bernardino County & Palm Springs very hard. All we had was a fair amount of rain and believe it or not, I did not feel the earthquake. This is the one singular instance that the folks who manage stage did something well by being overly cautious and hyped up the storm. Yes, folks inland were affected by not nearly as much because most people heeded the advice, prepared and stayed off the roads.
