68k plus Mk5 Supra owner here! I’ve never had any issues with it besides regular maintenance like oil changes. It’s a very reliable sports car, which surprised me considering its BMW components. I daily drive this car and typically get an average of 30mpg, which is pretty good for a sports car! The interior might feel a little cramped, but if you’re short like me (5’6”), it’s no problem! I’ve taken the Supra on multiple 8-hour road trips, and while the seats can get uncomfortable after a few hours, the performance always puts a smile on my face! I came from a 2011 Corolla, so I don’t mind the BMW origins. I’m just grateful to have a reliable sports car that turns heads and won’t break down on me! Overall, I’d rate it a solid 8.3/10!

I’ve been driving a 2025 Camry SE for the past three weeks, and I have to say, you’re going to be impressed with the Supra’s performance, especially if you opt for the 3.0 Premium. The driving experience is on another level. However, keep in mind that the Supra requires premium gas. If you’re planning to use it as your daily driver, be prepared to spend around $200 to $250 a month on fuel, depending on where you live Also oil changes for the Supra is roughly $150 if you go for the oil toyota recommends. Worth it if you have the funds, not if you’re trying to save up the most 👌

I own a 2020 model and honestly I can easily forgive all the downsides the car has. It's simply a blast to drive on any road or circuit, an easy ECU tune and good aftermarket coilovers really make it supercar fast, has reasonable fuel mileage and is practical for this class. I've been tracking the car 2-3 times a year but had no major issues whatsoever, so Toyota and BMW did an amazing job on this car.

I had a 2020 launch edition and i agree i thought it was an absolute blast to drive. I had a couple gen 3's back in the day so noone wanted a "real" supra with a 3jz more than me but after driving it i got over it pretty quick.

This could be said for any car. I own a 1992 Nissan Skyline GTR that I got in 2015 shipped directly from Japan to here in Dallas. Bought it for 15,000 USD, put 10,000 worth of engine rebuilds and upgrades, maxxxecu and now it makes 850 WHP and destroys current gen supra's etc. I have a 2001 MK4 Supra coming to the states in 2025 once it reaches the 25 year mark and it will be much better then the current gen supra's.

Chain is in back of engine because the previous iteration of this engine, M version, was prone to "crank hub failure". That iteration had the timing chain at the front of the engine. The timing chain sprocket connnected to the crankshaft/"crank hub" was designed as a friction connection. In some rare instances if the engine was over revved this friction connection would slip causing timing to go out and in worst cases causing engine internal damage. To increase power to the newer iterations they had to come up with a more reliable design. The more powerful engines on the older iteration increased the probability of slippage/"crank hub failure.

It has been well-maintained, and I can tell you no 19-year-old Toyota will drive as good as this 19-year-old BMW. It is pure pleasure to drive it. I can be on the highway in fifth gear going 80 mph, and just press the gas and the power just keeps on going into triple digits in fifth gear. It’s really unbelievable. The problem is most people do not maintain their BMWs, not that they’re bad cars.

I owned two Supra’s in the mid 80’s. Two notable things: first, the horsepower was 150…on a six. HA. Second, the driver’s seat was by far and to this day, the most comfortable I have ever sat in. I am 6’0, avg build and at that time weighed about 175-180. I have added 30lbs, but I bet those seats would still work. I wish I could put these in any new car.

I had to throw my 2 cents in after I heard you guys raving about those recaro lookalike seats that came in the 82-86 supra performance models... i had the 82 and when I bought it, those seats just Looked insane and initially felt the same...However ,after a few months of ownership, my lower back started to develop pain Everytime i went out in that thing... it got so bad that I could no longer enjoy my rides in that beautiful car... Despite All the lumbar and other adjustments, they did Not offer the needed support in my lower disc area and I sadly ended up getting rid of it...even short hop drives were killing me... all I can say is if you have the right size frame, bodywise, the seats i Guess work well... im 5' 7" with a smaller build, 160 lbs at that time..no go for me.. I ended up with an 87 rx7 turbo.. those seats literally healed my back over several months.. best seats Ive ever had in a car were those...

B58 has proven to be a better engine than using the Toyota 3.4L twin turbo VA35A-FTS for this car (plagued with main bearing failures). I'll take replacing some plastic cooling parts at 100k miles over the rod bearings failing.

Owning a sports car is not a cheap thing. I bought mine knowing it's not going to be the upkeep cost of a camry and I think it's foolish to think that. The B58 appears to be refined and reliable and at least some parts that commonly go out are easy to get to.

*I was financially fortunate (and stupid lol) enough to purchase a 2022 GR Supra brand new at the time.* I can say without a shadow of a doubt, it was one of the best decisions of my life. Thanks to the car, I was able to have legitimate enjoyment every single time I hit the ignition and I still look forward to every moment that I drive it. Coming from a base model Honda Civic, I was completely unprepared for the amount of raw power it had but I found myself adjusting quickly. It really handles amazingly and has been an absolute beast during canyon runs, not to mention the constant red light races I found myself in (because literally everyone will want to test you, in a fun and harmless way of course). For those thinking of buying, it will most likely beat out 95% of cars that you run into on a daily basis and that's in completely stock form. With a simple Downpipe and tune, you'll be flying by 99% of cars out there if that means anything to you. I've had ZERO reliability issues in the 2 1/2 years of ownership, but that's expected in a BMW that's been stress-tested by Toyota. Regardless, gotta be keeping up with maintenance if you want to keep it that way lol. Regarding costs, it definitely is higher maintenance than your everyday car. Oil changes are pricy and you gotta get quality German oil, either Motul or LiquiMoly. If you want the car to stay strong, you gotta stay on point with maintenance and those costs start adding up. Also, expect to pay premium prices for any modification for the car whether you're looking for carbon fiber accessories or performance based mods. A CF-Hood for any other car would be around $1K or so but most CF-Hoods for the GR Supra are at $2K minimum. All I'm trying to say is if you're trying to modify the car and make it yours, keep in mind the additional costs alongside the total purchase price of the car. Some clear downsides include: Low visibility bc of how small the windows and windshield are, generally tight interior (I'm 5'10" and would definitely prefer more room although I do understand it's meant to be performance oriented and not luxury), pricier modification costs (it's like companies came together and just decided to charge a premium for Supra products smh). If you're on the fence about buying a GR Supra and none of those downsides are dealbreakers, THEN JUST DO IT! lol but nah, really weigh in your financial situation before doing so. The golden rule always is "If you don't have the money to buy it twice, don't buy it at all". Make responsible financial decisions and if this aligns, then go for it & be prepared for the most fun you'll ever have driving a car. Cheers and holla at me on IG if I swayed your decision! :)

None of the vents have open sheet metal underneath. You literally have to use a saw to open them up. Not to mention the door vents serve no purpose... they just go straight into the door jambs...

@@bman1668 That's what you've been told. Tunersand reviewers have taken the plastic pieces off (or just look from the other side) and it is solid sheet metal underneath. They are are ready for function as any car's fenders are for widebody kits. You have to do your own cutting.

My son has a 2021 GR Premium, we did some exhaust, a spoiler lip in Carbon, Carbon wheel and shift paddles, stereo system upgrades and it is a very nice car now. Beats Mustangs and Camaro's easily and is the best looking car BMW makes, the Toyota emblems also help with resale, which isn't as good on the Z4. The only gripe is getting in and out is a tight squeeze.

My son also has a 2021. He’s done so many mods (yes a new unlocked ECU) and it making an estimated 800+ to the wheels and is still not finished. I say estimated because another owner had the same setup but with a smaller turbo and was rated 815 wheel on the dyno. The B58 can handle about 950 without changing internals, which is next on the list.

@@montanatony5838 I’ve driven mine on a 9 hour road trip. It’s surprisingly comfortable and there is enough space for two people comfortably. Biggest issue is you can only really fit two decent sized suitcases in the trunk and there’s no other space/compartments in the car for storage.

I bought a Toyota backed 3 year warranty so I’m covered for 6 years. 34mpg on freeway, styling always stirs up controversy which I love. Crazy power, ZF transmission is lightning quick. Sounds great and is just the right size for me. I don’t want to drive what everyone else has, I want a sports car that is different. Collaboration of Companies and their products is a reality now. The B58 in the Supra is one of the best engines on the market today in terms of reliability and hp. I had this same engine in my 2017 BMW M2(it actually sounds better than my current G82 M4C)and it had zero issues over 4 years of ownership. BMW has really nailed the straight 6 turbo charged engine and the B58 is one of the gems in the line up. You can also throw a lot of power at these engines w/o messing with your internals. I like the new Supra as well and there's a reason Toyota, who have a great reputation for making solid long lasting vehicles, partnered with BMW on this project.

As a 24 Blupra driver, I absolutely share your concern about service in the years ahead. The service dept at the dealership where I bought the car may be huge but that doesn't make them competent with a car like this. No reason to worry about maintenance. It would surprise you how many BMW shops have no issues working on these cars. The only worry with maintenance is if you actually need the dealership for anything but that's practically universal to any dealership. I've had my 2024 MT since February and no regrets buying. Certainly a few things that could be improved on, almost all of which you mentioned in this video, but overall it's a great mid-range sports car.

They already had a dedicated compact car chassis, the GR Corolla is still just a Corolla platform underneath. They did not have a dedicated high-end sports car chassis. i own 2023 AT for the last 11 month as daily, and dont feel any disappointment with this car, only time i have been to the service is to get oil change done by warranty. yes there are couple things, but when you drive this car no one is going to see if there is any fake vents. only thing i wish this car had is remote start and 360 camera. thats it. oh this car is really gas saver, but obviously depending on your driving style! and yes, solid review!

I have owned one of these 3.0 Auto BMW Supras. Best car i've ever owned. Looks glorious, drives glorious, suprisingly practical (did you know the boot size and aperture are designed specifically to fit and hold two spare tyres securely for driving to track days). Every enthusiast everywhere likes it in one way or another. Expect to hear 'nice car mate' and 'nice BMW mate' A LOT. It's the best BMW ever, thats not badged a BMW.

The large amount of plastic and lack of concern for ease of maintenance is by design. Most premium brand cars are leased or bought by owners who will only keep them for 2 or 3 years. There isn't a lot of thought put into the experience of the owners beyond the first one.

I believe that the difference in power on the six cylinder is that the original ones had an integrated exhaust manifold that was built into the head and the turbo charger bolted directly to the head. The improved engine that makes more power has a separate exhaust manifold that bolts to the head and the turbo bolts to the manifold. There may be other changes as well as that that improved the power.

That’s not true. Porsche builds their cars to last decades. When you consider their smaller suv and the base 911 is less than some pickups these days and I mean 1/2 tons it’s in the same price point as those 1/2 ton pickups. Are you sure about that? A 1994 supra before any options ran you $40,000. Adjust that for inflation, and you're looking at a $86,000 entry price. No wonder they didn't sell well at all during their time! Meanwhile a modern 2024 3.0 Supra is $55,000 for sticker. That's 36% cheaper! This is fundamentally a far more accessible supra than the legendary mk4, and even if we assume chronic reliability issues (which do not plague b58 bmw's), you have $31,000 you can put towards repairs before you've spent more on a modern supra!

My BMWs hum along at over 170,000 miles with no problems. Minimal maintenance. This is the N52, their most reliable N.A. engine. The B58 in the Supra and their current 40i cars is the N52 of their turbo engines.

Plenty of time to prove if it is unreliable, and seeing as everyone loves to hate on BMW, you would have heard if it was unreliable/breaking the bank by now. It's definitely not perfect, or cheap - but you can't find another new sports car this performant at this price point.

My son just bought a GR86, the Toyota/Subaru mashup, and he's wondering about where to go when he needs serious service. My concern with the car is the Subaru boxer engine. I love hot Subees, but I know the engines demand undivided attention. I don't see that as an issue with the Supra, though. Thanks for a thorough review. This car appeals to me in a number of ways.👍

Don't get me wrong, plastic and rubber decay aside, I love my stock 2004 BMW 325 CI manual but I find it so ironic that the car company known as the benchmark for making the most reliable vehicles turns to one known to make some of the most unreliable. When BMW dropped the dip stick, I was out. When my 325 CI goes, it will be the last BMW I own, at least past 2005.

Each Toyota dealership has at least one Supra-certified technician. And as a BMW repair shop owner told me, "It's not rocket science. With the proper tools and service manual, any good tech can work on a Supra."

Should always take vehicles like these to a specialized local shop. You will probably pay about half for repairs/maintenance at an independent shop that specializes in these brands versus going to a dealer. This goes for BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, etc. Which a VW shop will be able to do all of the brands I listed minus BMW. But, there's independent shops that specialize in these specific brands, they probably know more about these cars than the dealership techs honestly.. and they're most definitely much cheaper than a dealership is. I've got a few local shops to me, some that specialize in VW, and some that specialize in BMW, so there's a little bit of competition, if they want business they've got to out-do each other with their quality of work and cost.

I think dropping all these new designs in a short period of time we can anticipate some pain and difficulties, but I will believe Toyota will fix the issues with their vehicles. As far as reliability, I have my concerns with the turbo charging and would not keep these vehicles long term. We are already looking at other brands outside of Toyota and Lexus for our next vehicle.

I bought my Supra after looking at 4+ years of forum and youtube video content that clearly shows that GR Supras have been very reliable. If you intend to treat a Supra like a Camry and drive 300,000 miles over 25 years, then you may be disappointed, but the vast majority of owners will have their Supras as a second or third vehicle.

Imagine of you waited 10 years to determine whether a car were reliable or not before you bought a new one. The last year of the GR Supra is 2025. In other words, you snooze, you lose.

It's good to know that the hood latches shake like that. I freaked out for a moment when I found out. These cars are pretty amazing for what they are, just by flashing the TCU, you'll be cutting down on 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

It’s not 100% BMW (even though it uses a shit ton of BMW parts). So the story goes, Toyota actually did a metric fuck ton of durability and reliability testing on the B58 and to extent the rest of the car down to each individual nut and rivet on the Z4/Supra’s platform to make sure it met their strict reliability standards. Any part that didn’t meet those standards was sent back to BMW for re-evaluation. And apparently Toyota also assisted BMW with the creation and engineering of the B58 engine as well (although development of the B58 started before Toyota started collaboration with BMW under the “Silk Road” project). You should read up on the story of the development of the Supra; it’s very interesting

I have a 2020 with 75k miles on it, only basic stuff needed like tires, oil and spark plugs. Will need to do the trans and rear diff oil again soon. Love the car gets a lot of attention (good and bad). My valve cover gasket needs a replacement however so thats the only bad so far.

It's usually not the engine itself that fails on BMW, it's all the carbage they attached to the engine and it will fail. I managed a business that services BMW and most the other dealers, so I see it everyday. By the way, don't bother talking this to a Toyota shop, they have no idea on how to work on it. Why would they it's a BMW, and it's utter BS that Toyota made any changes on the B58.

Think of all the money BMW corporate has made with all the plastic parts used on BMW's cooling systems for the last 30 years. Failures out of warranty on the customer's dime. That ladies and gentlemen as an automotive engineer is BMW's business model. Could they spend a just a bit more to make their cooling systems more bullet proof? Of course. They make more money by cheaping out on the cooling system in terms of profit at initial purchase and they make more money again when the customer has to replace the cooling system out of warranty. Who has owned a BMW out of warranty that hasn't had to change the cooling system? Not many I know including me before I wised up and stopped buying older BMW's that I would work on myself. Gives credence to the adage, they get you coming and going.

I owned quite few BMWs well out of warranty without major issues. My current daily is a 13 year old BMW with an N55. For over a decade I have not has any issues, but I do change the coolant every 60 to 70K. The car has nearly 200K. No issues. The B58 I own has far too low miles to say anything other than it’s been great so far.

Plastic engine parts help keep the weight down and increase fuel efficiency and it dampers now and does not corrode. But agreed it is not long lasting and requires replacement. Trade offs.

The B58 and its predecessor the N55 are outstanding engines and 4-peat and 3-peat world top 10 engine award winners. Their reliability, power, and efficiency are pretty much unmatched.

The N55 has nearly 200K and I have NEVER had any issues with any of the cooling system, with the exception of the overflow hose, which broke at around 120K. The car is 13 years old and still drives like new. The N55 is whisper quiet at idle and cannot be felt when revving up! The B58 is even better.

When I heard about complications of B58, I decided go back to s55. Even with crack hub issues, atleast you can change cranc hub to aftermarket and maybe even do the job yourself. if something goes wrong with timing on B58/S58, you are basically paying for pulling the whole motor out, wich is not ''practical'' and cost a lot more.
