I have an E60-535d, year 2008 which already is modified with stage 2 remap, downpipe (DPF-delete), full EGR-delete, bigger intercooler and KN-filter. Also the automatic gearbox is remapped with stage 3. The turbo pressure was 1,95 bar before the modification and now, over 3 bar at 6th gear. I can imagine my car has a little bit over 400 hp. I have driven faster than E39-M5 (400 hp) and E46-M3 (343 hp) on the highway. My car accelerates just fast as E60-M5 from 0-100 km/h because the high torque. The last work with my car was swirl flaps delete with the plugs and new gaskets. At the same moment, I cleaned the inlet manifold and intake ports, changed glow plugs and crankcase ventilation. I did not remove the vakuum clock and electric valve who closed and opened swirl flaps but re-installed them and putted back the electric cable and vakuum hose to avoid fault code and limp mode. After I installed back the inlet manifold, i sprayed 2 cans of intake cleaner to clean up the whole intake system. I am very satisfied and can not notice any power loss.

Nice job man and for those who wonder what's going to happen next, I say this: I did remove and cancel the disa valve on 525i M54 engine after the flip collapsed into the manifold, but remain attached, lucky me, no performance has changed on the car, no warning lights, fuel consumption not changed. I remember the hassle on that day, the car will not start just at the Airport entrance and so on.

I have a 2010 E63 635D in prestine condition with no modifications, 115k full BMW history would you still recommend getting the swirl flaps blanked? Nothing been changed on the car Diesel V-Power Shell used always.

Swirl flaps can be deleted/blanked without removing/blanking the EGR. I've removed/blanked the swirl flaps on my auto E39 (the manual doesn't have swirl flaps) and the EGR is still in place as it is clean and operating. Removing the swirl flaps doesn't cause any engine faults on an E39 and does not cause a failure on the emmissions check during a Controle Technique.

I blanked the swirl flaps on my engine but i don’t know what should i do with the vacuum hose that goes from the swirl flap actuator, should I remove or leave the vacuum actuator and also the with hose? conected or just close the hose with a screw. Hi Dr. I have a quick question. I know this is an old video, but I've done this same operation on a e65 730d - it's my car an i'm not a mechanic. The car didn't have an oil leak but i just wanted to make sure I jump in front of the issues. Anyway, i installed the x8r kit, put everything back, but before i put the engine cover i noticed that from the left side of the engine (looking from the front of the car) i can slightly see the orange of the gaskets (the round ones). Should the manifold sit flush there, or is this normal (i checked your video a few times, but i see no view from that side)? I see no performance issues, no unusual sounds, no erros in ISTA. Thank you!

There is also the fact that the swirl flap blanks come in 22mm and 32mm sizes for M57 engine, so need to be careful and purchase the corret ones.

An easy job which applies to M57 engines with automatic transmission in BMW saloons and Tourings. Doesn't affect M57 engines in Range Rovers, Opels and X3/5s. Also applies to some M47 2.0 litre engines.

The previous owner of my 530D deleted the swirl flaps, but didn't replace the vacuum can and swirl flap rail. They've left the swirl flap pressure converter plugged in electrically, but with no vacuum hoses, is this ok? they have plugged the hose going to the swirl flap valve though.

Question, Im cleaning the intake ports on the engine as best as I can before reinstalling the intake, if a little of the carbon crud falls in, will it just burn out or can It cause damage? I'll be vacuuming the ports out as best as I can before installing intake too

Hey mate, plz help!!! X3 2005 3.0d m57s, sweet smoke white/blue out exhaust, car is missing and a rough idle, no oil in coolant and no coolant in oil pressure test came back good. Removed egr wet soot in exhaust side smells sweet and the inlet manifold side looks like it was pressure cleaned on the inside, egr and inlet manifold have clear signs of coolant pushing past as soot is wet and melted and seals of manifold have been pushed threw due to coolant pressurising. Crank case breather new

Hi BMW Doctor. Just bought a BMW 520D. Started the car and engine oil vomited into turbo inlet pipe through Inlet pipe. Checked oil lever and still there was too much engine oil in the engine. Drained all the oil and change oil and Oil Filter. Stared the engine again with breather pipe disconnected and oil filling cap open. As pressed the gas, engine oil suddenly vomited from the oil filler cap hole. There is no abnormal engine noise and engine runs smoothly. Mileage is 130k.Milea. What can be the problem, plz

Depends on the model year. My auto (only autos have swirl flaps) E39 had about 90k miles when I bought it and I had the swirl flaps deleted as part of the after purchase service. Later model years have stronger swirl flaps but personally I would delete the swirl flaps immediately after purchasing the car. They seem to have little or no benefit and are potentially the cause of a catastrophic engine failure.

make sure you after breaking thr flaps all the parts are taken out, I used pressure washer and mr clean and cleaned all the egr gunk and rubbish out and too my surprise a little part was stuck inside the manifold which came out during pressure washing it glad i did this otherwise i would be still crying about it

I took off Intake Man as shown, as starter motor packed in, blanked swirl flaps & changed glow plug relay while accessible . BMW mech said when not working commonly shows up as Diesel particle filter malfunction , I have this fault light on(change oil every 10K without fail, high speed MWay driving everyday). Took off coolant hose that bolts to block, lost some coolant. Built back up, replaced lost coolant, new starter works great, engine runs sweet n smooth through entire rev range, BUT when put under load ie driving, engine jerky at first, smoothes out but no power/acceleration, amber engine light on ? Where have I gone wrong, anyone know? Many thanks, Dave G.

Hi Doc, I’m driving the 530d touring 2006, I bought the kit and took it all apart, the swirl flaps were the thicker 3mm+ and seemed solid so I left them in and changed all the gaskets and glow plugs... Would you say I should go back in and take them out? Also, what benefits does blanking the egr have?

Blanking the EGR has few benefits and possible some disadvantages. The EGR not only recycles exhaust gas but also use the exhaust gas to cool the combustion process. Removing the EGR can increase the emmisions and depending on where you are cause a technical inspection failure.

@@grahamepigney8565 Are you sure EGR cooling the combustion process rather than heating up? Also, if it's the first time to delete the swirl flaps, shouldn't the software need to be remapped? Otherwise at low speed the engine would be running lean.

How about that vacuum line which was pinched between manifold (lower intake duct on cylinder Nr.1)? Still there while installing the manifold back. That's the other vacuum line going to turbos.

That was replaced after as it didn’t need manifold off to remove it it’s easy enough to relocate and make a longer piece of pipe as that pip was to short anyway somebody had the manifold off previously as seen where they cut the flaps out

Could someone explain why he say's the metal rail must go back in? I bought a swirl flap removal kit listed on this page but it turned out after removing my manifold mine had already been done. The only difference is that my rail is missing. The black plastic part that controls it with the vacuum hose is still there but rail is removed. I am worried now because the BMW master said it has to go back in...but not why? If someone can clarify I would be forever grateful.

That rail must go back in as these are vaccum operated. Without this going back in you will have a vaccum leak and therefore, the rail and the complete pressure system thinks that the flaps are still there doing there job. I personally always always put it back in otherwise many many people ends up with vaccum leaks and that is usually the main culprit for people not blocking it off or not fooling the system.
