Everything I know about BMX / Bicycle brake pads in one video!
In this video I break down literally everything I know or could think of to talk about when it comes to brake pads. Everything from the compound they're made of, how they're mounted to the brake arms, how they're adjusted, and much more! I honestly didn't think that there was this much to say about brake pads pertaining to BMX, but here we are. If this is too much for you and you want a shorter version just to help you decide which brake pads to buy, I also made that video and it's linked below! Thanks for watching, what should I explain next?!

I've been using clear Odyssey A brake pads for years. Haven't really tried anything else they work so well.

Thats a good tip to flip the spacers as a gap adjustment 👍 The toe in stuff i think you got it backwards. Toe-in is when the leading edge hits first. Thats what the little flaps on the pads are for. More of a mountain bike thing but the same applies to bmx. Theyre mud/dirt scrappers to clean the rim for the braking surface. I used to file them off at first but then i started using them and thought they worked pretty well. Pull them tight when you install they self adjust. Then when riding you can clean the dust off your rims when brake checking or dragging them a little. Id drag a little before the lip and it would prime the surface up for a nice lock up. Back edge hitting first is toe-out. Ive done that too as a last resort for brakes i couldn't get to stop squealing. Carbon rim life now. Squealed so bad until i got the carbon 2 compund.

Awesome video. I've always ran chrome rims. And once tried them with clear pads just to see the difference. So they worked almost too good for a bit. But with that grippy of a combo, they wore down so fast they needed to be readjusted often due to material loss most might not notice as fast as someone riding everyday or even a hill bomb slow down can take alot of material. And riding dirt + clear pads & chrome rims made them not work very well at all. It was like the dust changed how well the clear tacky ness worked on chrome. I highly recommend people only use clear with an anodized or non chrome style surface. Nothing against the clear pads. They're great, but probably not a good idea for chrome.

I just put the Koolstop salmon and black in today. I did the proper toe-in and I sanded them a little bit to get the gloss off. Went on a ride today and dang! Super super good brakes. No squeak either. I have painted wheels. I have also tried the clears. I do love the stopping power but hated the squeak even after toeing them in and sanding them. Good info man. Love seeing your videos! 🤙

I use clear fly manual pads for ramps and the black for dirt. Less noise when feathering vs needing them to lock up doing lip trick stuff.

My favorite combo is chrome rims with Koolstop Eagle claw 2 salmon. I have seen a few or my friends find out the hard way not to use clear on chrome, 2 or 3 uses and the clear peeled right off of the pad. Might have been an early clear compound, but it made our group not bother unless you had colored rims.

Strange but I've had odyssey yellow pad crack n peal of the metal insert (raw alu rim). I use salmon inserts intended for road bikes but would prefer softer ones - that should be stronger

I toe-in a bit, it feels soft when you are stationary but if you have bit of speed or pressure on the wheel towards its rotation it corrects them instantly and you don't really feel it any more.

I put brass bushings instead of brake post which was smaller in d than 9mm, this prevented brake arms from tilting - going down the street I didn't wake up whole hood - last time I thrown clear pads in the garbage

Probably not easy. I bought those in Poland But those were too short for my brake arms and you also need to have a long m6 screw that screws into the frame (some frames have m8 or m10 threads and some are non standard with fine thread). You can also have problems with standard coiled springs because bushings can spin if the screw is loose. And if you tighten too much brass will compress a bit and thicken - i put concave spacer and plastic one (that compresses a bit) close to the frame. But now I can use clear pads (I've also cut front and back edge of the éclat brake pad at an ~40° angle). I think it will also slow down wear on the brake arms cuz brass on brass seems better than brass on too small steel brake posts

Toe-in the pads: quiet braking parallel to the rims: a lot of squeaking toe-out the pads (that's insane, don't do it): the pads won't work properly and they'll scream bloody murder
