I've only ever broken a small number of spokes over the years. Though, when I considered a new ride late last year, I made sure it came with hub guards all round because I didn't want to mash up the new hubs on my grind-side.

Yeah if you don't grind or run pegs you wouldn't need to run hub guards. But its still freestyle, if you want to run them go for it! 😂👍

I would recommend the odyssey guard that is built for that rear hub. do you need hub guards for both sides of the wheel if you are doing grinds on both sides?

Yeah it makes sense to protect everything if you are going to be grinding both sides.

Hey Donald, because most guards are made from the same material they really all act the same, (except 1/2 brands) The cost is pretty similar across the board but like most things with BMX the better the quality the more expensive. You are totally right though, it's up the rider and the buyer!
