Hello. Former real Islander pilot here. I just bought this aircraft and, surprisingly, the flight model seems really accurate compared to the real thing. Some of the sounds could be improved a bit, but generally the aircraft is really good. I flew the aircraft generally on short trips, and I can say that even though it's not the fastest airplane in the world, it was a real joy to fly. The only other ting that I could say is that the aircraft is a tad more floatier than in real life than is in the sim. Overall great review.

Hi Wanderer, Yes, the waves do look really rather good don't they. It's the wind setting that makes the difference; by increasing the wind, you can induce the white caps and wave animations, which I find makes the water look a lot more realistic (otherwise it often looks a bit too much like a millpond in MSFS). Cheers, all the best! : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Haha that's right, you have good memory friend. yeah the Trislander is quite nice too. Though it does have some quircks that i gather have translated into the V2 of the Islander as well like some exessive wobble on the ground when the engines run, Roll back when parking brake is on and you add throttle and some quite speedy cruise speeds for the power settings but after talking to the dev and trying to help it was just too much of a problem to get right. Fix speeds at one altitude/QNH and you mess up the rest. So tbh i would not call it study level as it doesn't fly as close to the numbers as some but the planes are a lot of fun to hand fly and the carb icing has thrown me for some crazy aproaches where they iced up while i had like power at itdle and when i needed power nothing came. never flipped the carb heat so fast. That said i haven't flown the Tri that much lately, very busy in DCS and attempting another world tour from the southern tip of Chile to Alaska in the C337 (all handflying). Though i recon once the V2 comes in the market place i may do some legs of the world tour in the V2 Islander as well.

Immersive procedures during startup, loved it! Easy to imagine sitting beside you in the "real" airframe and getting things explained. Great example of an optical correct airframe- the ceiling feels quite near, but i am pretty sure it is in reality. I wonder what causes the heavy distortions e.g. in the Learfan, didn't check it out myself but it looks horrible when panning around. It's not only the correction slider or the zoom level, pretty sure it has something to do with the model scaling or the model specific viewing angles... Anyways, wish you a "cool" weekend! 💙

Great flight and video as always from ITBS. Fair call on the textures, but as it is an Islander of course I absolutely love the product regardless. Some things not shown but probably worth mentioning (and already experienced in the Trislander): door animations are now nice and slow, cargo variant will show stuff piling up in the back according to payload entered, and there is a clipboard in the door pocket to remove static elements. As for "study level" (going by the Tri again), you will need to use carb heat frequently.

Left Mag only for start is actually quite normal. Left mag is the impulse mag. Nearly all piston engined aircraft with a Bendix started switch start left mag only, you just don't know it because you move the switch from both to start but in start the right mag is off. Also during the ground runup is in normal to do the carb heat first to clear any potential ice build up before you do the engine checks.

It’s a bit of a combination of the factors you mention Marshie. Most aircraft types of the same category (eg single engine props, jets etc), tend to operate in broadly a similar way. Once you’ve learnt how to operate a B737 for example, you can have a pretty good stab at flying any commercial jet (as the systems architecture is broadly similar). Then it’s just a case of familiarising oneself with the panel a little and running through the checklist accordingly. In an ideal world I’d learn each aircraft in detail, but alas I don’t have the time, so I use a checklist and fill in the blanks with real-world knowledge / best guesses. Everyone enjoys simming in a different way of course but for me, learning the sorts of things you mention above, is where the fun / satisfaction of simming really comes from. I do hope you’re enjoying FS Academy and getting some good value out of it! I’m glad you enjoyed the outing in the Islander - hope you’re having fun in the updated version of the aircraft yourself now then. Cheers Marshie : )

Anyone finding that the autopilot is a bit wonky? VS and alt hold don't seem to function at all. Update: Marketplace version was outdated but has received v2.1 fixing all the issues. If you're a casual flyer like me this might be useful, unlike other planes (that i've used) it won't automatically level out at your selected altitude when using VS, you need to set your desired altitude and VS rate then select the ARM button. I might be mistaking how this works, but it works for me :P.

Hi Cikame, Did the most recent patch help at all (I haven't had a chance to fly the aircraft since)? Unfortunately the default MSFS autopilot is rather wonky at the best of times (VS tend to be particularly iffy) and I believe the Islander makes use of it. It's not a fix per se, but I generally find myself flying the climb / descent manually (on GA aircraft) and just using ALT HOLD for the cruise; that seems to be about all the default autopilot can manage on many addons. Not ideal of course, but most of the fixes really need to happen on Asobo's end I think. Cheers, all the best!

Hello Jeffrey, Yes, I strongly suspect there is an inaccuracy in the systems modelling, with regards to the single vacuum pump (especially given the size of the Islander) and the vacuum gauge would seem to confirm that. Yes, there quite a noticeable gulf between some addon standards and others when it comes to modelling / texturing. I believe Sim Works Studios did actually laser scan their Kodiak and it certainly shows - it would be great if more devs could do the same. Texturing plays a big part as well though; I think the modelling of the Islander is good, but some more detailed / photorealistic textures would go a long way. Hi Mooks, Not really using any mods, at least not any that would have a visual impact. I only run on the "High-End" preset and in 1080p - that obviously gives nice smooth fps. The water looks as it does because of the wind conditions; increasing winds in the sim, will create taller waves, white caps etc (that look generally more realistic than the "millpond" conditions MSFS otherwise creates haha). The main reason my videos look the way that they do though, is that I spend a lot of time adjusting lighting / weather conditions for each flight. This makes a huge visual difference within the sim - clear skies and midday lighting can tend to look rather sub-par. I hope that helps. All the best! : )

Anyone from back in the day's of P3D and X-Plane will know that Black Box Simulations was the absolute number one laughing stock of the flight sim community. They would put out a product that was totally unflyable, with the worst 2D graphics known to man, with zero updates. It was upload and forget for them. Their reputation absolutely stank the place out. When a new plane or piece of software came out that was utter crap, and you bought it, the expression was "you have been black boxed" By the looks of it they are under new management. A management that actually cares about the products they make. And are also backing them up with regular updates. You can still see some of the sloppiness in their 3D design, but by God have they improved. Lets hope they stay motivated, and dedicated to MSFS. They have put out a really good plane here. Yes, I’m not quite sure what the story is there Chris. Certainly historically, BBS’ reputation was “chequered” and even that I found strange, since I gather BBS was born out of PSS - their Airbus being my first ever “study level” addon and one that I thought was superb (for its time). I was wary of purchasing any BBS products as a result I have to say and they didn’t do themselves any favours with the Bird Dog being released in an unfinished state. Still the Bird Dog was turned around and it seems most very much enjoy it now (I keep considering picking it up myself). The Islander whilst not particularly beautiful graphically, is a very solid effort and the Trislander seems to be a fan favourite. Apparently (let’s hope) a leopard can change its spots ; ) Cheers!

Xplane11 level maybe but there are better looking planes in that 7 year old sim. They suggest its study level, but there is no cabin temp simulation or other environs. There are no swappable better gps units. You open the doors with a switch panel, even though there is an obvious door handle. You open the window though by clicking on it. This thing must have been truly awful before v2, because even now I would call it the worst plane I own for the sim. Really turned off on Blackbox now. Yuck is the only word that comes to mind.

Very sorry to hear that you aren’t happy with your purchase, t5sblanco. Unfortunately, visual modelling / texturing has never been one of Black Box’s strong suits and this continues to be the case, even with their more recent products. There are some strange design choices also with the addon (eg the door “switches”, as you mention). Personally, I think the aircraft flies quite nicely and sounds fairly decent; the systems aren’t “study level” but, on a par with most addons. I enjoy the Islander for what it is but, I know that the visuals will be a sticking point for many (and fair enough, they are pretty last-gen). In fairness to Black Box, there was a significant amount of work put into V2, all of which was done for free; I don’t think we’re looking at dev that doesn’t care, rather just a dev who’s skills haven’t kept up with the pace of development within modern sims. I do hope that the $10 didn’t represent too much of a hit. Happy flying and all the best!

@IntotheBlueSimulations it's not really about the 10 dollars. I usually feel your reviews are spot on. To me, this one missed the mark. Sure they did v2 for free. But there are plenty of devs who are coming back later and updating their products with feature additions and improvements. There are some who do not. In this case though, if I think of the islander as a developer quality and tech demo for their Shorts 300 series products, which is a regional flyer I am more interested in personally, nothing about this suggests to me the Shorts product at such an elevated price point is worth my time and that's unfortunate.

Well, I am sorry if you felt I missed the mark, T5blanco (sincerely). I would just counter your point somewhat, in that I don’t think I misrepresented the product in any way? I try to avoid giving my opinions during reviews (unless I can back them up on screen) and instead aim to simply demonstrate each aspect of the product - I figure viewers can then make up their own minds. Graphical quality and sounds, tend to speak for themselves during a review. Systems depth, I aim to demonstrate with a full flight and the flight model is always the trickiest aspect to assess / convey to the viewer. The Islander still isn’t that pretty by modern standards (but I don’t think I said anything to the contrary?), I think the aircraft sounds pretty decent and the systems depth is acceptable. I think the aircraft flies quite nicely and that has (seemingly) been backed up by a couple of real-world Islander pilots in the comments section. In short, I really do apologise if you feel like I “sold you a lemony but, there wasn’t any nefarious intent on my part. Personally, I quite enjoy the Islander and of course, my own preferences are not going to align with that of my audience 100% of the time. I hope that’s fair. Cheers and all the best!

@IntotheBlueSimulations I gave a second watch, and I'll agree, I don't think you misrepresented it per se. But in the twin otter videos, you devoted a lot of time to demonstrating you couldn't feather the prop. Both on the ground, and in flight. In the islander video, you just said in your closing remarks that you couldn't get it to work. I think I walked off with an impression that you were more endorsing of the islander. But I will also say, I didn't buy the module due to your comments. I bought it hoping it might better on the Aerosoft product after reading quite a few comments favorable towards it contrasting with the Aerosoft Twin Otter. My impression was not matching that at all, and I then went and watched your v2 video, wondering if i was missing something. It seemed to me to be more positive than I expected upon my watching, hence my comments. But overall, I really appreciate the depth and detail in your reviews. I bought the Vulkan more or less on your review flight. And mind you, I am a Yank, so I have zero nostalgic tie to the aircraft. The only real tie for me was the Vulkan was the plane depicted as hijacked and water landed near the Bahamas in Thunderball. I do love some James Bond. Regardless, I really enjoy that module. Thank you for your thoughts and reviews!

Ahh, well I can definitely explain why my reviews / level of enthusiasm differed between the Islander (V1) and the Twin Otter; the Islander was one of the first addons to be released for MSFS and as a result, my expectations were not nearly as high at the time (most of the early MSFS addons were a bit of a rush-job). That accounts for the feathering comments also; when the Islander released, no MSFS aircraft natively supported feathering of the prop so, whilst I was disappointed to see the behaviour (or lack thereof), it wasn’t a huge surprise. With the Twin Otter on the other hand, prop feathering was well established in the sim by the time that the aircraft released. . . The same is true of every other aspect of the two addons really; I like both the Twotter and the Islander but, I had higher expectations for the Twotter as, by the time I came to review that, the bar had been set much higher within MSFS (that’s one of the problems with review vids, they do tend to “age out” after a while). I hope that clarifies things a little further. I’m really glad you’re otherwise generally finding the content useful. What’s not to love about a delta-wing, James Bond, nuclear bomber haha! I hope you had a great Christmas and all the best for 2024 : )

@@christiannielsen8733 My sim will come with a full scale cockpit including glue and paint to assemble and for full immersion comes with several blow up dolls to simulator the passengers in the back.
