Mid 2000’s BNSF were so cool! With standard cab EMD’s still pulling long freight trains and H1, H2, and H3 all over the place. Also locomotives still wearing Santa Fe and BN paint schemes. It was a very underrated era to Railfan.

@@devernepersonal3636 Well I’ve never heard anyone talk about that era at all. I hear people talk about the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s era of Railfanning a lot.

Just wanted to let you know that where the BNSF crosses the Chippewa river just north of Nelson it immediately passes by the remnant of the old Milwaukee Road line that used to go between just north of Nelson to Eau Claire. Now the portion of the line from just north of the St. Croix sub to Durand is still intact and used for trips and is maintained by the Chippewa Valley motor car company.

You are correct. I see the tracks each time I pass there.

good video. have taken many road trips from mpls to lacrosse, down the minn side and back on the wisconsin side. it's a beautiful area, both in minn and wisconsin, well worth a weekend. i love the fact almost every little town has an old train station. maiden rock has a nice little bar that has the best burgers i have ever ate. lol.

It really is one of the best places anywhere. The fact that you have the river with barges, bald eagles, trains, and the unique small towns. You can’t go wrong.

This video is outstanding, like all those filmed in the early 2000s before the Gevo invasion in BNSF, seen on your channel. Incredible that with only 6000HP (two SD40-2) or 8800HP they manage to pull those heavy trains, especially that many had to face the Marias Pass..

Between Trempealeau and Lacrosse, there is a way to see trains. You have to grab a bike and pedal along the Great River State Trail, which pretty much parallels this route.

The sand mining operation in Maiden Rock shipped 40 hoppers at day at its peak. The company went bankrupt and the mining facility is dismantled.

It's really too bad it is gone. It was such a unique operation. If I remember correctly, they had a conveyer belt that moved the sand across Hwy. 35.

Did the railroads naming of this line as the Saint Croix subdivision have anything to do with the fact that at one time the railroad met the old Milwaukee road line that went from just west of Prescott up to Stillwater?
