There's just something awe inspiring about these magnificent machines. I can't imagine a better way to move hundreds of thousands of tons of freight.

Nicely done! You caught the infamous Santa Fe (BNSF) 2223 Geep, which-if you pause at 3:50-shows it's crooked numbers. 2223 served here in Texas for quite some time. Thanks for posting. Post script: Atlas is now producing the 2223 in N-Scale.

-this is old Chicago, Burlington & Quincy trackage from Chicago to Aurora, IL. It is in CTC (Central Train Control) territory and shares trackage rights with Amtrak and Metra and thus has always been referred to as, "The Race Track"
@MrMocha41311 жыл бұрын
Great video, you should go over the crossing there on Ridgeland, it was recently redone. Track speed for Amtrak and Metra are 70mph. 50 to 60 mph depending on the symbol of the train, the Chicago Sub of BNSF sees (B, C, E, F, G, H, Q, R, S, V & Z's). Keep posting!

What’s with the large, box or roof-like, overhanging structure on the top-rear (opposite end from cab) of many of the locomotives pulling freight? They seem to have some type of vents directly underneath, but no obvious purpose in themselves (though I’m sure there is one). Can see this structure best on top of the last locomotive shown at 10:58 in the video (black w/two lights facing rearwards).

The BNSF "Racetrack" is one of two main line routes in and out of Chicago for one of the biggest railroads in the US. So it is BUSY. It also hosts Amtrak and commuter trains, which means the track needs to have higher speed capability as well. That's actually why they call it the racetrack.
@deanebuckingham724111 жыл бұрын
Charlie Schulz summarized it well, but I'd like to elaborate. This is the busiest commuter line in Chicago both by trains and passengers. Also 3 out of 4 of BNSF's freight lines to Chicago use this line. It's amazing how well they maximize the 3 tracks.

Excellent, steady, well-framed videography! I would love to see extreme close-ups of the wheels going through switch frogs. When two engines are traveling somewhere, to save fuel, is the first engine pulling and second at idle? Thank you.
@schul411 жыл бұрын
The train IS being pushed by the locomotive on the end; it is the only source of power for the train. But it is being controlled from the front from the cab car with the little window.

In the segment 2:38 to 2:54, is the train being operated from that visible end, or being 'pushed' from the rear? I can't quite see if there's a driver behind the little window, but surely there must be an operator looking forward..
