In an earlier special in one of his songs, Bo says (about the audience) "You can tell them anything if you just make it funny, make it rhyme". I feel like that's the sentiment coming across in him adding the laugh track here. He's said some very real stuff on stage in the past but as long as he says it in a song or a funny voice, the audience laughs and keeps rolling.

Yeah, this made me think of that as well. It ties in very well.

That makes sense. That was the feeling he was able to share in one of his last shows before taking a break. He stewed on that feeling for five years. And got over it. And then... The funniest thing happened.
@laurenh7558
@laurenh7558 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I was directly thinking of that - because in that very song (referring to the song "Kanye Rant"), literally after he has that emotional interlude about his anxiety and declining mental health, he says "I put on a silly show / I should just shut up and do my job / so here I go" and goes back into the "bit". And the audience, who had been dead silent during the tense emotional bit, starts whooping and cheering when he puts away his tragedy and emotions and starts doing "the bit" again. And I feel like "All Eyes On Me" is basically a direct follow up to "Kanye Rant". And one commentator I saw said that perhaps people were whooping and cheering because when you're in an audience, you don't have a lot of options to express sympathy or sadness or really anything, except through applause. I was at a show once (not Bo, just a random comedy show) where they had to stop the show bc someone needed medical attention and had to be helped out by paramedics. And the audience clapped? Ostensibly for the paramedics, but it felt super out of tone. So even if the audience can't do anything *but* clap, no matter the situation, I think the laugh track in All Eyes On Me is definitely meant to point out how no matter the feeling behind it, there are just some times where it's super jarring to be a performer and hear people laughing/clapping to things you've just said.

@@laurenh7558 >And I feel like "All Eyes On Me" is basically a direct follow up to "Kanye Rant". That's actually exactly what it is. It is detailing, in an incredibly direct and forthright way, his experience having his first panic attacks on stage. Which was while he was performing Can't Handle This - that's why he just had those inchoate yelps at the end of the track, why there were very sudden cuts (it was filmed on three nights in NYC so footage got spliced together - supposedly some had to be re-recorded in an empty theatre), and why when he said 'goodnight, new york, I hope you're happy' he looked like a rabbit in the headlights, dropped the mic and ran off stage. In that special it looked like he came straight back out but apparently he had a breakdown backstage and had to compose himself If you've ever had a panic attack you will suddenly see the lyrics in a new light. The ocean rising/whole world ending stanza is meant to indicate the extreme tunnel vision (literally and metaphorically) you get during one, it's impossible to think outside of a sudden ego death while it's happening and that's essentially what a panic attack is: very sudden and total ego death without the benefit of any insights that psychedelics which can cause that, might give you

sometimes people laugh out of not sure what’s going on, the irony that he finally wanted to perform and then the pandemic came…,how many people had plans and their life ruined, so much stress, people dying…i work for a hospital, we never got away from it…..so many medical staff burned out, it was effing exhausting….patients attacking staff, and then some of those patients dying, they said to the end they weren’t going to die, it’s made up, 🤦‍♀️. so i think the laugh track is dark comedy, the flip side of crying….we’re tired of being sad and tired.we’re all worn out

My personal opinion is that this performance is imitating what it was like to feel the pressure and anxiety of being on stage; lost in the euphoria of the moment and the crowd’s adulation, but deeply disorientated. It’s a panic attack. I think the dual nature of the lyrics support this too: ‘get your f’in hands up, get up out of your seat; all eyes on me’, but then ‘hands down, pray for me’. He can’t stop wanting to be the centre of attention, but is also asking for help for it to stop.

"what is that?" That is genius level performance art. People tend to forget this is scripted and crafted rawness, not a live, improved moment. Which makes it even more artistically masterful. The insight and discipline to portray your own turmoil. I have suffered panic attacks that lead to periods of isolation and agoraphobia since the mid 80s. That said, I am a very social & extroverted person. Worked in studio development scouting talent and developing shows as well as managing a comedy club for years. Grew up surrounded by artists, studied and wrote for a lot of comics. I have been watching Bo since he was a kid making videos in his bedroom and telling people he was a genius. The layers of his work always astound me. I predict people will be doing thesis on him in the not to distant future. Writing books/documentaries on the body of his work. He is flat out amazing. Enjoy the rabbit hole.

You're right to feel uncomfortable. Bo is not doing well at this point in the special. I think you're onto something about the laugh track -- Bo discusses serious topics in all of his work, but the audience is expecting comedy. On top of that, when people are uncomfortable, they will often laugh. I think he added it because it's always been his experience -- if he were to perform this live, there would absolutely be people who would laugh at his heartbreaking monologue. Looking forward to seeing more from you with Bo, subscribed! I would love to see you watch the whole special, but if you're going to pick individual songs, you will probably enjoy Welcome to the Internet, That Funny Feeling, and The Chicken from "Inside."

That was a great reaction. I think you experienced the effect Bo was going for, and I love how you commented on your reaction to the song. I think others have mentioned it, but he has said himself in the past that he is ok. He hasn't really done any media after Inside came out, but people worried about him after Make happy. The panic attacks he talks about he really experienced, but as he mentions, he has worked on it. At the end of the day, Bo is a brilliant performer, and very good at conveying emotions. Since he hasn't talked about it, a lot is in the eye of the beholder, but my take is that he talks about things he means and has experienced, but 'leans into the emo thing', as he has put it in the past. I would love to see more Bo reactions, and I recommend watching the whole special. It would be great if you would do it on camera. Edit: oh, you asked in one of the comments if you should do reactions to pieces you already know. All I can say is, I would watch them.

please do react to the rest of "inside"!!! it's an absolute masterpiece. on top of that, to give more context to this song in particular i would second one other comment and say taking a look at his "kanye rant - can't handle this" performance is highly highly recommended! he's an incredible performer and quite the emotional alchemist on stage, considering most people (if not everyone) couldn't tell back then that he was often panicking internally. luckily these days he really is doing better! additional sidenote for future reference: "art is dead" is another oldie of his that i recommend, that comments on his relationship with being a performer, and the entertainment industry as a whole. he prefaces it in the special with the words, "this song isn't funny at all but it helps me sleep at night." i look forward to see you delve into his work!

I love this comment. I hope you don't mind getting singled out but I've noticed something just under the surface of a number of comments on this video and the only way I can describe it is as a sweetness. There's a gentleness that I feel behind so many of these comments on this Bo reaction. I've been doing this for a little while now and I've come to learn that different fan basses are almost like micro-cultures and they all have their own customs and traditions and attitudes or dispositions. If you and some others who have commented here are any indication, I think I will work to make Bo a regular feature on my channel. Just to have more opportunities to have your kindness, passion and sincerity in my comments. As for the Kanye rant...I'm pretty sure I've seen it. It's been a long time so it might be worth a revisit but I haven't gauged yet how viewers feel about reactions that aren't a "first time". What do you think? Would you still like to see me go through it? Again, thanks for watching for the comment :) I really do appreciate you.

For the laugh tracks, I feel like its one of those things that inherently aren't funny, but finding the humor in those situations is what helps people cope with the hard times. The panic attacks on stage are obviously not a great place to have them, we all know that. Its the fact that he said it and the timing that makes it humorous. Then "The funniest thing happened" again covid isn't why it was funny, more like the irony that he was like "I'm better now, I want to go out" and the world said "No!" Bo also addresses the issue of "how do you know if what you're doing is even funny since you have no audience to supply the audible feedback of laughter" within the special, and maybe its a matter of he misjudged how many people would think it funny.

I am so glad you noticed the laugh track. It's intentional, one thing that he has hinted at a lot over the years is how much he hates that the audience laughs and cheers at what he's saying even when he's being serious. I would say "Sad" was his first real attempt at bringing up this problem, but I think he really drives the point home in "Can't Handle This". After he finishes his rant, he moves into a serious section of the performance. He talks about how he wants to keep performing, but the audience has become a blessing and a curse because he's starting to feel like the audience is laughing at him more than laughing with him. He talks about trying to give the audience something he can't give himself (which explains the title of the special, "Make Happy". And as soon as he's done with saying all of this, the audience starts cheering and laughing.. It's so disgusting and sad to watch.. This comment got way longer than intended.. Anyway, the laugh tracks are added at specific points in the "Inside" special as another hint toward that feeling. The saddest part of it is even after five years that's still eating at him..

Most reactors don't notice how uncomfortable this song is meant to be, they just think it's a funny song to jam out to. I'm glad you notice it and feel it. They think Bo is only comedy and don't think deeply about anything.

I want you to watch the entire thing. I would watch a three hour youtube video of someone watching this 1hr special if it meant I got to feel even a small bit of how I felt watching it for the first time.

As an acting/performance people I feel you'll have a better time with things like "White womans instagram" "30" and "welcome to the internet" while this entire special is amazing those pop in my head as having more performance to them then others. 100% would love to see more.

one form of comedy is absurdity - like something so outrageous happens, which shouldn't follow from the premise and the absurdity of it all not making sense has us react with laughter - as a form of social acceptance - like as to ask "that's so fucking stupid/outrageous/extreme that can't be real can it?" So while expressing the misfortune and despair of getting shut down by the virus JUST as he gets prepared to *return* - he's asking us "that's just so fucking abdsurd, isn't it?" and our answer is to laugh. which some of us feel bad for because it's in the same breath as a call for sympathy or help.

Laughing at a joke about the pandemic is not laughing about the pandemic. The joke was the understatement, the matter of fact deliver, and the subversion of expectation in using a common phrase that would fit perfectly, to end that story, if the context were not quite the opposite. It's harmful, down to the soul, to live with a filter on your laughter.

I totally understood his timing of the laugh tracks. Dealt with similir shit for years myself and I wouldn't say people find it funny but one thing I have learned is that most people say they care but when it boils down to it they really don't. We have been in a mental health pandemic now since the turn of the millennium yet people are too busy worrying about a cold. Its horse shit.

I'm honestly not sure why everyone recommends "All Eyes On Me" first because I think without the context of the rest of the special (and honestly, context from some of his previous specials), it doesn't hit nearly as hard. I honestly don't like this song as a standalone song; I think it really only makes sense after having gone through the emotional rollercoaster of the rest of the special. That being said, thanks for your reaction! Really glad you've started on this Bo journey

I have a totally different interpretation to this song to basically everyone else I've seen. I don't think it has basically anything to do with the pandemic. I think he's talking to and about himself throughout the entire song.

Because they're laughing at his pain and suffering, not really listening to what he's actually saying. Just because he phrased it as a "funny story". I watched a few reaction videos and mostly everything laughed with the laughter, not quite connecting what he's really trying to show and say.

You're one of the only reactors I've seen to be offput by the laughtrack the same way I was. It's so clearly laughing at things that are "jokes" if you completely divorce them from the context of the deeply sad story he's telling. It's so tone deaf and that's the point! Because you know it's not a real laugh, since he's alone in a room. It's a choice.

People laugh at the mention of the pandemic (or put a laugh track to it) for the same reason anyone laughs at a comedic mentioning of a tragedy. It helps us cope with it. We all went through it, we all know it sucks, but the timing of it was such that it seems like something is intentionally messing with us sometimes. So, in a way, it becomes funny. You either laugh or you let it drag you down.
