The "funny" part was that he worked on his mental health and got better. He was going to start performing again at the beginning of 2020, and then the pandemic happened. He made the special that this song is from completely alone in his guest house through the pandemic.

The "Inside" special, from where this is taken from is a whole Netflix special tha Bo recorded, performed and produced all alone in his guest room during the pandemic. This special is a masterpiece, since it can range from extremely funny to utterly disturbing during the course of it, displaying how he (and actually many other people) copped during the pandemic. The "funny" part is Bo being ironic/sarcastic, because as he was finally feeling better and prepared to re-enter the world and actually made the decision to come out of his "isolation" period he was forced right back into it against his will by the pandemic. Hope this helps you get a bit more context on this. Also, I think it would be fun to check your reaction to "White Woman's Instragam" that's also featured in the "Inside" special.

Honestly I’ve stated it multiple times, INSIDE should be in the Smithsonian. It is the best expression of a global society during the pandemic. The fact is we all lived through an extremely traumatic circumstance that will likely never be replicated. Somehow this retired KZbinr created an masterpiece of the human condition and, through his obvious pain and confusion, allowed us to breathe again. I fucking love inside. Start to finish. Should be shown in schools to future generations so they can possibly grasp the utter fuckery and magnificent resilience of humanity.

This song, as with everything in this special, is drenched in meaning and saturated in layers. Bo is fantastic at saying everything he wants to while leaving space for us to insert our own. Watching some breakdown AFTER watching the special could do good.

Bo perfectly captured how I've felt since 2018. I dealt with my own depression to an extent and had finally gotten out of an abusive relationship and a terrible job. I was starting to feel better near the end of 2019 - dating again and going to interviews, actually leaving my home and talking to friends again - but then as Bo says... something "funny" happened.

I had been pretty much living like I had agoraphobia for a few years following my husband's sudden passing and having to care for my very small son & disabled mom. My life centered around that. Other than doctor visits and some shopping we rarely left our property. The helicoptering anxiety I had trying to keep everyone safe & alive was crippling. But so was the isolation. So I worked on it and I got better. I decided to go back to work a few days a week at the hospital. I'd start after the 2019 holidays. So that was fun/ny I got sick in the first wave (here) in March/April.

Glad you going back for more as I did enjoy your first Bo reaction quite a bit. But this is why I think the recommendations from comments are always... not the best. I get that after "Can't Handle This" everybody wanted to see the reaction to this one: there is a connection there and it's the two points of his specials where he really goes to the "deepest ends" and presents them raw. But man, this song NEEDS the context of the special it was a part of to really hit. Having someone watch Bo's "breakdown" without everything leading up to it is doing a disservice to the reactor and the music IMO. How can you possibly expect a person to really feel that bridge without watching what lead to it? Again, I do get why it was heavily requested - especially when I thought was a very good reaction to the first one. Regardless, this is obviously not on you Amy - hopefully you continue to see more Bo videos, especially because there is a lot of stand alone stuff that is pretty good. But if there is anything I am trying to say here is... Go watch "Inside" in its entirety. It's funny, clever, sometimes very meta and the best piece of art I have seen about the isolation of the lockdowns.

I'm with you but I even think it's best to go back to his first special and go from there. You have to see where he started and the kind of comedy he did then to understand his relationship with comedy and the regrets he has and why it was so hard on him.

In the context of the special this is basically Bo surrendering to depression and nihilism. I view this as depressions beckoning song. When you watch what immediately comes before this song it also sets the tone of what’s about to follow and it’s brutal

All of Bo’s songs have a serious purpose to them, but this is one of his most serious songs. The “funny thing” that happened was that once he was finally ready to “re-enter society”, he was forced into isolation again by the pandemic. The special this song is from, “Inside” was entirely written, filmed and produced by only him, while he was isolated in his home.

Watching Bo's last video of is 2nd special (Cant Handle This) as an introduction to Bo, and then following it up with this video from his 3rd special 5 years later with minimal context is a crime. Without seeing his earlier content from (what) or (make happy) you lack the understanding of significance to his music in (Inside). It would be like if you were to do a reaction video to Harry Potter and you watched a 10 min clip from the 5th movie, while having never seen any of the prior movies. You are going to miss a lot. The reacts are good, but please, from the beginning! Or at least watch the first two off camera so you can better react to (inside). Also, the funny thing that happened in January of 2020 was Covid, the thing that forced us all (inside), right after he got better and wanted to go back outside. Which is why he then made (inside) from inside that room all by himself during Covid. Keep it up!

With Bo, what he says is not what he's actually saying. This song could be his depression singing - not him. His depression is wanting to be noticed. The blue light; the camera pick-up (panic attack); the fact that it doesn't matter if the world's ending, because nothing matters. It's his mental health singing...

The funny part is: You get panic attacks on stage You leave live comedy performances for 5 years You work in yourself You get better You finally get yourself together enough to try to perform in front of an audience again You get excited for it Your entire audience is told to stay at home due to a pandemic. Your entire hyping yourself up and getting the courage to try if you still get panic attacks is wasted energy. When you finally have the guts to get back on the horse, you find the horse dead in a ditch. Now, THAT'S comedy. It just figures. What else is gonna go right? "I wanna hear you tell a joke when no one's laughing in the background." as he said in Goodbye, the song that ends this special named Inside. The second he decides to get back on stage and is filled with creative energy for his next show, he is told to keep a safe distance from all other people. To self-quarantine just in case. That he can't hire a venue and do a show. That now that is wants to go outside again, he is forced to stay... Inside.

He meant “funny” sarcastically. Or like when someone says “wanna hear something funny?” but then they tell you something bad that happened. It doesn’t literally mean funny. And judging by the lack of any change in expression on your face, you didn’t quite catch what happened in the story. He got better and then decided to come back in January 2020. “And then… the funniest thing happened.” Covid hit in February 2020. So he had to go back inside again

Johnny Cash -Hurt, Pink Floyd - Comfortablly Numb (live Pulse concert), Radiohead - almost any song, but I suggest Paranoid Android, Harry Mack - any of his Omegle Bar freestyles, Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night?, Sublime - either Santeria or What I Got, My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade or Helena. Those all tend do do well and can take you in a lot of different directions.

I also think him setting it up as a "funny" story is a way to play into expectations. Like, he's a comedian, he's telling a story and the "audience" (laugh track) laughs at everything that could seem like a joke even though it's all deeply sad. It's similar to what he was saying in "Can't Handle This" with "you can give them anything if you just make it funny, make it rhyme". There's an uncomfortable performative aspect to telling the truth to an audience.

His "funny story" was that when he was ready to go out and perform again, covid happened. This song is an excerpt from his Netflix special that he filmed alone in his room. His special is called "Inside", because that's where he was, and where we all are/were. The laugh track is added as irony because he is a comedian, his problems must be funny, right? I interpret: "we're all gonna go where everybody knows everybody" is online, the internet It has a kind of double meaning, in that you might think "Oh wow that's great, it's where everyone knows each other, isn't that nice" but on the other hand, it's saying that the internet is exclusively how we know each other, not in person. It's where everybody knows everybody.

It's really hard to appreciate this song without the context of the full special -- in the scene just before the song he breaks down sobbing on camera. Bo is a deeply troubled man, and it has gotten worse for him the older he gotten, as is often the case with mental illness.

Hey Amy, Check out an Australian artist by the name of "Tim Minchin" he is a musical comic (and Soooo much more) like Bo and I wouldn't be surprised if Bo looked to him as inspiration. Also a UK artist by the name or Ren... his song "Hi Ren" is an artistic masterpiece and has been likened to this generations bohemian rhapsody. His trilogy tale of Jenny, Screech and Violet is also brilliant. Whilst a lot of your content is not really meant for me, though it may help me relate better with my Daughter who is about your age, your Bo reactions have been great and I'm sure you'll see a wide variety of people coming to your channel because of Bo. 💜🇦🇺

Basically the funnyness of it is the irony of it all. How he isolated himself because of mental health issues, and right when he was ready and starting to get back into the world, life just gave him a big old slap and said, "lol okay, you think so, huh? Well, try this out for isolation." It is funny in an anti-funny, self-deprecating way. More in a mockery of one's own situation, but who ever to tell it than them?

The “funny” part is him making fun of himself; he recorded this entire special and all of the songs in it in one room of his house and the laughter that you called the audience is actually just laugh tracks that he inserted himself at parts where people would laugh usually. He knows it’s not funny, but people will laugh at it anyway 🥺 but also I absolutely ADORE the Bo Burnham reactions, keep them coming whenever! As far as the next song I think that you would enjoy, I’ll give 2 recommendations depending on how you feel If you want to laugh, listen to “Straight White Man” If you want to laugh and still have a deeper meaning, listen to “How the World Works” Thanks for the videos!

The "funny" thing was "hiding from the world" and deciding to re-enter after 5 years of isolation and mental health improvement, he had to go back into isolation and hide from the world. I always thought that the best part of this song was the last verse. "They say "the ocean's rising", like I give a shit. You say the whole world's ending honey it already did. You're not gonna slow it, heaven knows you tried. Got it? Good. Now get inside" That pertains to both mental health and social isolation in the pandemic. The ocean's rising, I dont care. The world is ending, it already did. You're not gonna slow either my depression or a pandemic. Get inside and hide.

Awesome reaction! I saw someone else make the comment that these 2 tracks that you’ve reacted to (while being some of his best work) are kinda lacking without the lead up to them. I was one of the ppl who requested this song next after your Kanye Rant reaction and now I have to say I agree with that sentiment. Bo’s journey from being a 16 year old edgelord on KZbin to the auteur he’s become is really something…without seeing all the groundwork he laid down over the years it’s difficult to discern the deeper meanings being expressed in these 2 songs. All that being said, please continue down the Bo Burnham Rabbit hole!!! He’s got so many amazing songs just from INSIDE alone. Welcome to the Internet, How the World Works, White Woman’s Instagram, Sexting, That Funny Feeling…the list goes on lol. Keep ‘em coming! Cheers

@@theConquerersMama that’s a solid point! I think you’re right, the layers and art are still there without knowing the history. INSIDE wouldn’t have been the massive hit it was if that wasn’t the case. But, I still think those 2 songs in particular (Can’t Handle This/All Eyes on Me) need at least a little bit of pre-exposition lol. I’ve seen a lot of blind reactions to both over the years and the reactors who “get it” are either up to speed on Bo’s journey, or are naturally good at picking up on subtext. This reply is really just a long winded way of saying “I agree” haha.

@@unclefoot "my whole family" is great and a great place to start. It makes me think of listening to my parents Lenny Bruce records with no context of the obscenity laws or his history with arrests. Or any real concept of sex, marriage or politics - honestly. And still thinking it was funny and wonderful and a little disturbing.

@@unclefoot I fell in love with comedy listening to my parents old records. Studied it in college. Worked at a comedy club for years and in studio & TV development. My late husband taught at the groundings and wrote for a lot of comics and shows. I have a real soft spot for the artists and the craft. Following their progress can be interesting. And heartbreaking. Contented, balanced people typically do not usually create wry, observational comedy. It requires some pathos and darkness.

I'm sure people are going to explain all about Bo, so rather than repeating, I thought I'd just toss an easily missed detail about his work. Or at least it's a detail that people don't talk about as much anyway. You should also pay attention to how he uses the lighting and camera angles, there's a lot of symbolism in it. As for the "funny story" thing, that was the joke.. Not only is it a cliché, but he was intentionally being ironic. A comedian about to tell a story that isn't funny. His use of the laugh tracks are also there to support the point he was making with "Can't Handle This", the laughter is there, but he's not telling a joke. If you watch "Can't Handle This" again, you'll notice that he deliverw his message, "I want to make you happy, but I feel like you're laughing at me, not with me. You're so unconcerned with the fact that I stand up here and beat myself up, self-deprecate constantly for your, and you laugh at the things I say even when I'm not joking." Immediately after he says all of that, when he "shuts up" and does his job, the audience starts cheering and laughing again. So he added the laughter to this video to reiterate what the audience does that bothers him so much.

Again great reaction video, but you need to watch some of the specials. Just so you can understand his story fully. The songs make a lot more sense and are alot deeper than if you just hear one song at a time. You should listen to the song ART IS DEAD

Although Bo is a comedian, he gets you thinking about stuff that makes most people uncomfortable. When people say this dude is a genius, they mean it. It’s not really “fair” to compare him to anyone, but to me this dudes the young/musics version of George Carlin!

This would make a lot more sense if you started with his early (nasty, vulgar teenager humor) stuff from his bedroom in high school, then follow his career as it exploded and he had trouble dealing with it. Crazy trip, tortured genius. It is even more brain-busting when you realize everything from "Inside" was written, produced, directed, acted, filmed, edited, and recorded by Bo, by himself, and no one else involved during a year of quarantine.

@@amyjaneketley the funny part of the story was that after he got himself together mentally and was ready to reintroduce himself to society and start performing again live covet hit and then he had to go back and be alone after coming from being alone. Basically he chose to be alone and as soon as he chose to be with other people, he was now forced to be alone again. Irony

This isn't the second song, just make a longer episode reacting to the entire special, or just record the song parts of it, because the rest of it compliments it a lot and is needed for a look inside.

The whole point of that story is that it wasn't funny. In his special Inside, He's pretty open about how he hates when people just laugh at his problems because they think "oh it's just a comedian, he's being funny"
