I love the "I think we aught to believe that she got to the other side" line. It fits regardless of what actually happens. If the chicken lives, it made it to the other side (road).. If the chicken died, it made it to the other side (afterlife).

I love this song so so much, and this was a fantastic reaction to it. I get those same chills when watching this because I simply cant believe he was able to take something as well known and kind of stupid as the chicken crossing the rode joke and turning it into that emotional masterpiece.

I cried. You can either see it as a silly song about the old parable of why did the chicken cross the road, or read depth into it being a metaphor for the frustration and hopelessness we feel in life and how scary it is to take risks to change our situations. Bo is a master.

I well up every time I hear it! Chills, tears... I even know how the song develops and it still gets to me! I say, "It's a joke, it's just a joke." This is my favorite song from Bo. I tear up every time I listen to it, including your reaction. I think most people can identify with the chicken. We love our life, but we also have dreams of bigger things. Most of us are afraid to act on those dreams for fear of crashing and burning and our heart hurts when those braver than us make the leap and lose it all. Also, most of us feel really dumb when “why did the chicken cross the road” can make us cry and feel vulnerable.

I think my favorite part of the song is the fact that musically, he makes it unclear if its a happy ending or sad. Since its unclear if the chicken lived or not, when he finishes the song, he doesn’t play the final note, leaving a sense of standing at the edge, waiting for the confirmation of a happy or sad ending. But its left incomplete. The ending is abrupt so the interpretation and be left open.
