Wasn't he also inspired by Hans Teeuwen, the Dutch absurdist that did some shows in the UK (in English of course)? Not his best work and Teeuwen is a bit strange, intimidating and absurd by Dutch standards too, but the combination of stand up with songs is the Dutch comedy tradition, comedy shows without songs have been the exception for ages.

Welcome to the world of Bo. For me personally, it's the most entertaining rabbit hole to watch people go down. I've been a fan of him since ~2007. We're both from Boston, roughly the same age, met him a couple times in public when I moved out to LA. Watching him get his first special on Comedy Central, making his move to Netflix, witnessing this comeback, and seeing him improve his craft, work on his health both physically and mentally, relating to his struggle throughout the pandemic, it's been one hell of a ride. I have nothing but admiration for this guy.

Bo is incredibly talented and cognitively gifted. He's also a tragic character. When you see his Kanye bit it'll break your heart. He had a nervous breakdown towards the end of the song and if you didn't know you'd think it was part of the act. He's so talented and rehearsed that he can be a one man band while keeping it together during mental health issues. Bo's better now, but his relationship to his audience is a tight rope act that can't be maintained into a healthy retirement age.

You're not incorrect by any means but well.. may I suggest fully describing the compelling part of the video might be a poor idea if you wish for her to do a reaction to that performance? Just maybe? To be fair, unless you research it or have heard the story before it's by no means guaranteed that you realize it, but still. Failing that the other song from Inside clears it up quite well.
@ScottLovenberg
@ScottLovenberg Жыл бұрын
@@Zabiru- I didn't say when it was. No one catches it and then the context of the song is lost. I tried to be as factual as possible without spilling the beans. I might delete my original, but I suspect the reaction ends with "cool song. He's funny." vibes.

@Zabiru That song is far more impactful with context. I guess you could argue that it’s best to watch it once blind, get context, then watch it again, but if I was just planning on watching it once, I’d much rather have the background info this guy dropped.

Someone mentioned "That funny feeling" and I second that. This song is... different, in a sense. People often have problem with getting their head around it, so it would be fun to watch you react to it and see how far your interpretation would differ from my own. Also, if you'll fall into Bo rabbit hole, you'd probably see how his work evolved. He started making videos on youtube in 2006, being sixteen years old and was really funny, but his beginnings were really edgy. I prefer newer Bo, where he's got "layers", like in here

I was hoping to get your take on this song. I love it because it's so chaotic and then becomes structured and calming. Many great things to take in, putting the world in the hands of the younger generation was one of the main talking points when it came to internet development. Apathy's a tragedy, and boredom is a crime is another great line. As a more comedic introduction I would recommend "I'm Bo Yo" or "word words words". Much love!

It is always amazing getting to hear someone's immediate thoughts they take away from his work. Also, you were fine leaving it as 'consume the internet' because that is what it honestly is too. Directly in the lyrics, he says it was designed to make you do that. The internet and all it has to offer has become an entity and being all on its own that wants people to eat it all up. And if you are not careful or are able to moderate yourself, an action that is very difficult for anyone, you will be 'consuming' all it offers you.

Bo's social commentaries are always so on-point. He uses art via comedy and music as a medium to address the destructive and nonsensical nature of our society and our norms, and what kind of messages they convey to the average person. I strongly recommend watching the entire special "Inside," even if you don't give us a reaction, because it is sincerely thought-provoking and existential.

He does a lot of commentary about the world, social issues, and mental health. If you come across a song of his from this special called "All Eyes On Me" I'd suggest watching one first called "Can't Handle This" first. They are about 5 years apart and when you watch them chronologically, the link between the two (don't want to spoil anything) really gives you some inside into him as a person. It would actually be cool to see a video with both of those songs back to back just to compare the two and see how you look at "Can't handle this" after watching both. The special that "Welcome To The Internet" is from is pretty unique because he wrote, filmed, and recorded the entire thing in quarantine by himself. It has a lot of great tracks on it. He can be a little cynical but, even if I don't share his outlook on a subject, he always makes me think and laugh.

Inside is a Netflix special that he filmed over the course of the pandemic in a single room. I know this kind of cuts against the reaction format, but I highly recommend watching the whole thing. It really is crafted well as a complete work. I don't know if I would regard Bo as a musician or comedian per say. He's more like a one man show really. There's a theatrical element to his work beyond just writing funny songs or telling jokes. He nearly always has a deeper message he's trying to convey and it feels like music and comedy are just two of the levers he uses.

It's hard to go wrong with Bo's songs. His entire "Inside" special on Netflix is incredible, though it's a lot less comedic than his other work. "what." is probably his most recognizable material. But yeah, I grew up in the '80s and my parents listened to country, so I have a bit of a soft spot for that music. Seeing (or rather, hearing) what it's become makes "Pandering" my favorite Bo Burnham song. His most recent stuff is among his best, but the one song I find most fascinating is Can’t Handle This. It’s from a performance of his in New York, just before he took a five year break from performing.

My favourite thing from this video was, the paradox of choice. Never thought about it like that, I'm gonna use that!

Though Bo Burnham's career is quite the evolution to watch unfold from beginning to end, I would highly recommend you watch "Can't Handle This" from his Netflix special Make Happy that was the predecessor to this one. It certainly gets one to ponder the hypocrisy of entertainment as a whole as well as the struggle for identity that can come as a price for choosing to be a comedian or entertainer.

Bo is a master of his craft, and also a product of the internet if you don't know who he is. He started on youtube in the mid to late 2000's. With Carlin as one of his bigger influences a lot of his early material was edgy, which as he's matured admitted he regrets. If you go down the rabbit hole of Bo I suggest you start chronologically though as it shows his progression as an artist. Inside is a masterpiece of the culmination of his past, and present. You see a man who's career/passion stressed him out so much that he quit performing to overcome his performance anxiety for 5 years and as he's ready to step back out into the world to perform again, lockdown hit. So you're left with essentially a video journal of Bo, in his guest house in the backyard of his home writing material for his special. He wrote, directed, edited, and produced everything you see in just over a year. Inside to me is an extremely important piece of art, and he even won a grammy and a few other awards for this special. It's funny, sad, introspective, and really thought provoking. He layers everything so intensely even after 5+ watches you find yourself picking apart the content and interpreting it as something different every time. Sorry for the novel, but if you're delving into this rabbit hole best suggestions are before you do anymore Inside reactions 100% watch the "Kanye rant" But as I stated previously starting from the very beginning would be the best viewing experience.

Subbing for more BO! He's the smartest man of his generation. He's a freakin' creative genius! He makes these comedy specials with both comedy and music, and that's where you'll find most of his songs. If you don't mind a few suggestions ... ? The one everyone is going to say will probably be the "Kanye Rant". If you do that next, follow it up with "All Eyes On Me" from his Inside special. It's got a link of themes. I'd also suggest "Left Brain, Right Brain" and "We Think We Know You" to go together. They're from the same special. OH! And "Perspective from God" which is absolutely beautiful. Good luck on your journey!
