Honestly that has to be the _best_ evil villain laugh I have _ever_ heard. Doesn't matter how many times I hear it, I instantly get chills and shivers down my spine. This song really does showcase how the internet went from this innocent "connecting people with similar interests together", to the crazy addictive, controlling nightmare-fest it is today _so_ incredibly well.

My favorite line is when he says “mommy let you use her iPad. You were barely 2. And it did all the things we designed it to do. Now look at you”. Because it sounds so sweet, the way he says it. But really what it was doing, was addicting that generation to screens. Access to them at such a young age created a dependency for “a little bit of everything all of the time”.

He starts it out like he's a circus barker trying to beckon curious passers by with something wild, crazy and fun: The internet. Look at all this stuff it can do for you! And yet behind the mask, the internet has a lot of horrible in it. Him mixing in all the shocking, horrible things yet slots it in between a bunch of positive, fun things but says it all so cheery and happy like it's all a good thing. How the internet went from being something of a utility, a luxury and having some purpose despite being limited. And now it's evolved to the point where it's basically taken over. People spend way more time online than they do off. Bombarded by notifications from every single app on your phone to get you online again, to engage with whatever topic the algorithm thinks will make you click. A little bit of everything all of the time.

This devil persona of his should have been the villain in Ralph Breaks the Internet and this should've been his villain song. It does such good job showing EVERY aspect of the internet: increased connectivity, helpful tips, support, but also addiction, overexposure and a showcase of the more disgusting aspects of humanity that some didn't even know existed prior.

You're not too far off, but you slightly misunderstood the part about the mom letting you use the iPad. It's not that you used to just use it a little and now we use it a lot. It's that we use it a lot because we used to use it a little. That these devices like iPads are designed to be highly addictive. That's what he's saying by "it did all the things we designed it to do." The modern internet and these devices are designed to trap us all online, to make us live our lives on the internet. It didn't start that way. Back in the 90s the internet was something we used, but it didn't dominate the lives of the vast majority of those who used it. We'd get on and read a few message boards, maybe join a chat room for an hour here or there, but it was something you used an hour or two a day, maybe. Often much less. Now we're all online all the time. We're almost all addicted. Kids didn't even have a chance, their parents put them online from a young age and it literally rewires how their brains work. Those of us who didn't grow up on these modern devices have a hard enough time putting our devices down, but kids who use these devices from a young age don't even realize its strange, its just the way the world has always worked for them. Which of course was the goal. Bo here is playing the evil carnival barker of your nightmares as an manifestation of the internet itself.

I mean, you're right, but you missed the point as well. "It wasn't always like this"....there WERE no Ipads. Smart phones didn't exist. internet speeds were in kbps, not MBs+. The "it did all the things we designed it to do" is correct throughout its iterations to brainwash and pacify a population....but her core theory WAS wrong, just not in the way you said. XD

I dunno if this is the way he intended it, but I took "here's a nine-year-old who died" as an anchor point between the ramp up and the darker part of the song. Mainly because it's couched between other silly shit like fantasy sports or whatever. It's like scrolling social media--because a child dying is one of the most devastating catastrophic moments in the lives of so many people connected to that child. And the song's pace makes it so we can't even focus on it. Like we almost forget he said it. Then it flips, where the majority is dark shit with a few little silly things thrown in. Pretty much nailed "the internet."

"...just nod or shake your head and we'll do the rest." is in my opinion such a clever way of describing the algorithmic way of the internet today. Say yes and you'll get more, say no and you'll get more of something else. There is no actual "no" it's just "not that", there will always be something else. You just keep sitting there and nod or shake your head, we will indeed take care of the rest 😈

Bo Burnham is levels ahead of most "comedians" you see today in my opinion. What makes him truly outstanding is his introspectiveness, which you haven't seen much of yet from the songs you have reacted to thus far. Also his ability to articulate is just next level. He is also a true musician because he does write all his music. This song was not exactly at the beginning of his special but the song Comedy was the first song of his special inside. It kind of gives a preface to the entire special.

Inside is very interesting because a lot of it doesn't really have the same immediate appeal his earlier stuff has, but it is way more cohesive than even the stuff he did earlier (and that is saying something). Why do reactors always respond to the quality of the music and lyrics without really reflecting on the meaning?? The laugh is scary and manic because the internet is scary and manic, the lyrics are disturbing because Bo essentially wants people to see how messed up our relationship to the internet is and I guess do something about it! But it’s like people who participate in that cycle don’t really want to acknowledge it?? After all Bo literally has a song skewering reactors…
@Piktro
@Piktro Жыл бұрын
Most people don’t overanalyze the songs on their first listen. You and I may have certain expectations going into the reaction, knowing what the songs are about, having the context of the specials, reading the comment sections, etc. but reactors often don’t have that understanding until they dive deeper into his body of work.
@terminatrix92
@terminatrix92 Жыл бұрын
@@Piktro accept the meaning of the song is extremely explicit. Even in isolation it’s clear that Bo is representing the internet as twisted and dangerous. Reactors don’t respond to that because it’s like saying their society is screwed up or that social media is inherently narcissistic. Bo is more an artist than an entertainer; he wants people to think not just comment on how cool he is
@Piktro
@Piktro Жыл бұрын
@@terminatrix92 so your problem is that the reactor didn’t focus enough on the morbid truths, but rather kept it light hearted? Some people see the world with a more optimistic viewpoint, and not everybody is ready to face certain truths. Not everybody wants to either, and that’s fine. The irony here is that you seem to be blaming the reactors for participating in “this cycle”, but here we are commenting on it, indulging in it, viewing the same content tens, if not hundreds of times, all in search for someone who thinks exactly the same way we do, because of our need to feel seen, and our desire to be right. We’re no different, and you’re lying to yourself if you don’t think your consumption of this is part of the very same problem you’re describing.
@terminatrix92
@terminatrix92 Жыл бұрын
@@Piktro so you’re saying all people are in denial about the state of the internet, especially content creators, so I should accept that and be less argumentative? And you think I’m the cynical one?! Isn’t it just patronising to hand out effusive praise when a reactor takes a positive message from an inherently cynical song?? I’m not abusive I’m encouraging critical thought and discussion. Comments should be a place for debate and thoughtfulness not just blind support or outrage. And that’s a hopeful view of the internet!
@Piktro
@Piktro Жыл бұрын
@@terminatrix92 not even close, but if that's how you interpreted my comment, fine. I didn't say you were cynical, but you're reaching pretty far by saying she's patronizing him. She added her own commentary about how true everything he said is, how people are glued to their phones/ipads, how she thinks he is a genius, complimented his musical abilities, etc. but because an 18 year old girl isn't sitting here crying, getting introspective, and creating her own Inside special, you're making the assumption that she doesn't care, or doesn't want to admit there's a problem. It's beyond ignorant to believe that the meaning is explicit to everyone, or that any single person can approach this short video with no notion, or even a pre-conceived idea of who Bo is, and feel the same way you do, react the same way you do, pick up on the same things you did. It's also ignorant to assume that just because she didn't do a thought provoking monologue that she's avoiding the discussion, or that you know exactly what Bo's intentions were. You claim to want discussion, but you're entering into the conversation in bad faith and dismissing all opposing viewpoints, as if they somehow hold less value than yours.
