Those cornrows were the first example I remember concerning an overt appropriation of this uniquely black cultural practice and the rather vocal criticism of why this style was done at all on this young white woman. As if no other hairstyle already in existence could have been chosen, but instead, yet again pilfering from African Americans without regard for ( or even giving credit to) its identity value in their community.
