Oh goodness. I originally interpreted this as a person in love with the idea of being in love, with his "true love" being the personification of romantic love herself. However, upon relistening to this for the nth time, it suddenly occurred to me that this might be the story of a man who wasn't able to confess his love to a woman before she died. (Church steeples, him singing with others--such as for a funeral service, the mention of time taking the person away from him, the imagery of the scenery being covered in moss, the white butterfly--a symbol of death or the presence of a loved one in some cultures...). Now I feel like I'm gonna cry! Either way, I love this song to bits. It has such a richness to it...I like thinking about the story behind it. :)
