BoA Sidewalks English Interview 10/2008 (All BoA Version)

As a devoted BoA fan for years, it was an incredible, and unexpected privilege to shoot and edit her first English tv interview in the U.S. The Interview first aired on the web in November on sidewalkstv.com . The website version had music, pics with her, and "Eat You Up" broll. This version is just what I shot(with a few cutaway's from Richard's camera) and edited, thus the title "All BoA Version"
Her second interview with sidewalks will take place the week of March 16th 2009, and will air soon after. The blog for that interview can be found here: sidewalkstv.com...
On a side note, I was not only fortunate enough to meet her, but I also got a picture and an autograph on my "Love & Honesty" CD. Awesome.

interviewer talked so fast but Boa seem understood. OMG I didn't. I though I must hear many english conversation each day. There are a lot of vocabulary I forgot inspite of learning by heart many time. Omg my poor English!

This is a slightly different BoA here, in some of her interviews she's a little tired or she's speaking her english slowly. In here, she's more upbeat, more energetic, more...hip? cool? more of herself? Haha. Go BoA! You're beautiful (hehe).

@xXDevilsRideXx Her English, has really improved since this interview. This was shot near the end of 08' and between the questions she seemed nervous and didn't talk too much. Sidewalks interviewed her again in 09' and during that shoot she was much more comfortable, joking around in English with everyone. She was cool. and I got to actually converse with her like a human being, instead of the first time when I stood there in awe.

Her record label failed. They did not push "I Did It For Love" on the video music channels like MTV, BET, VH1. No Pop CHR/Top40, Urban/Rhythmic radio push neither, in the USA.

Its not really a fake accent. When Koreans and Japanese learn English, even in school, they learn it off American tapes. Mixed with their natural accent, it takes time to adapt. I taught English in Japan before, so I know. So give her a break on the accent part. Imagine Americans trying to speak Korean or Japanese. The accent disparity is much much more hilarious.

OMG! I've been learning English for about 10 years and my teachers all say I'm very good at it but I didn't even understand a whole question from the reporter! Why does she speak so fast? I really don't understand this comment... Boa is fluent in three languages - her native Korean, English, and Japanese. And by fluent, I don't mean being able to conduct the simplest of conversations you'd learn the first week in a foreign language class. You can tell because she understood everything the interview said as she spoke informally and super quickly to her and her replies were completely coherent. Also, her accent is really good compared to the average Korean who knows English. But really, why care about that when every language has different accents even among themselves to the point where it's sometimes difficult to understand that person (e.g. various UK accents)? In regard to the interview, I didn't see a problem with it. Fan or not, she was clearly being really nice in a typical American way which is how things often go when a journalist interviews an entertainer. Now if this was the Dalai Lama, president, a crime victim, etc. where you need to be super professional then that's different...

Sosmcs See I'm sure there are fellow Americans who would cringe at your accent/dialect, too. Boa isn't a native speaker (only began learning when she was 13 or 14) and has spent the majority of her career singing in Korean or Japanese (with the occasional English version, but that's not very common). That she is capable of holding a coherent informal conversation (pronunciation mistakes notwithstanding) is an achievement that many language learners strive for with a second language, let alone a third. The lack of formality is normal when interviewing an artist (singer or actor). That's always been common and it's not like the interviewer is being racist or patronizing (speaking loud and slow or something equally ignorant). Obviously, you've never seen an interview by Ellen, Wendy, Oprah, Tyra, or an MTV or BET interview... They're all laid back.
