Cairngorm was my first munro and the outcrop just of the summit where you and kev had lunch was where we had ours, there we found a space below the big rocks that could be used in an emergency. Came back down via the goat path in one of the corrie's. Wouldn't try the path again unless it was dry.

Once you get away from the ski paraphernalia, Cairn Gorm is a nice Munro with plenty of approach options. 😁

El Alamein refuge was found in a very poor state a few years ago. Aluminium sheet and steel wire was found nearby that somebody had left, presumably with the intention of doing repairs. That Al was cut and placed around the frame, especially the roof, attached with the wire, to patch the missing areas of the lining, and then a lot of stonework was put on the outside of that on the roof and walls. This, and re-hanging the door, meant that in the period 2016-18 it was in a usable state of temporary repair. I think we should be preserving the memorial expressed at this site but perhaps not in the original way. It is therefore a choice between rebuilding this refuge to a good standard or re-imagining this memorial expression, within the Cairngorms, in another way that is in keeping with the original intent and minimising offence to contemporary ideas of wild land management.

Thanks for the information Jim. Due to its location, I'm wondering if it'll be left to rot and go into further disrepair. 😔 We were chuffed to find it to be honest.

It's an old shelter, I'm not sure why called it El Alamein, but you might find this blog interesting: heavywhalley.wordpress.com/2014/04/29/el-alamein-bothy-in-the-cairngorms/

Memorial shelters were placed in the Cairngorms about 60 years ago. The names Saint Valery and El Alamein refer to engagements involving the 51st Highland Division in WW2. The 51st were .. em ... sacrificed, at St Valery as the BEF evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940 and survivors spent five long years as prisoners of war. The reformed Division played a key role in the Battle of El Alamein in the North African desert in 1942. 51hd.co.uk/history/battle_of_el_alamein
