Had been planning to go for another camp or 2 on Dartmoor before heading back to Scotland, but have recently been too busy and had a trip to Scotland organised for 2 months, so I knew I could get out again.
I know it is arguably the incorrect place to pitch but after a summer of lovely weather I really fancied some winter camping in harsh conditions.

Hey champ, great video, I live at the bottom of the Glenshee pass which is where I believe you have shot this video. Just a little tip for future reference, turn your ice axe around so the adze is facing forward, as in the event of a slide you will have it the wrong way round if the pick is facing forward, making the chance of a successful fall arrest low. Cracking video though and thanks for putting the effort in for us to be able to watch 🙌 All the best, Lee.
@RowanWildCamps
@RowanWildCamps 29 күн бұрын
Yes I was up Glas Maol. Ok, I will look into that for next time, thank you for the advice. I suppose having it that way round is better for snow as opposed to ice, where you would want the point. Perhaps all I have read is for self arrests on ice rather then fresh snow. Thanks again, glad you liked it. Rowan.
@levijords
@levijords 29 күн бұрын
@ hey bud, so it’s the same for snow, ice, any type of ice axe arrest the Adze needs to face forward as your wrist is effectively backwards if a slide happens if the pick is forward, which means you have to 180 degree the pick back to halt a fall, almost impossible. Will link a really good video for you to take a look. 🥊

Oh that's an exciting place, looks very nice. The gear helps, but its not the be all to go walking/camping in amazing places. It has taken me years to get this gear together and yet I go camping on Dartmoor in the same places I did years ago with much less/simpler gear. Almost a preference thing, it only really matters for summit camps/harsh winter or if you want to go ultralight. Can do 90% of conditions with most gear. Perhaps one day you can get the gear you want, but what you have now I'm sure is enough to allow you to enjoy nature. Thanks for watching. Rowan.

They are really nice tents. I had a Soulo Bl, but it sadly leaked. I would say both with cope with 90% of the weather you will encounter in Britain. The Jannu is a much nicer space to be in at night but you pay a weight penalty for it. Personally I have found the Jannu more enjoyable and more versatile. The Soulo is good, but for long winter nights it can be a bit cramped and that is where I prefer the Jannu. Hope this helps. Rowan.

Great winter night out, cold and quite windy in the morning. Have been looking at some older nice Cairngorms winter hiking vids lately, this one certainly fits. As a winter camping novice, would you mind sharing a/partial gear list? Ice axe, sleeping system et cetera are obvious but I could use advice regarding gloves, mittens and stuff like that. (I've got some 90% of all required gear for snow hiking but mainly worry about freezing fingers; all my dry and warm gear becoming unreachable if I can't use any clip/toggle/zipper. Perhaps bring multiple or do you use combinations and/or something like Bramble hand warmers also perhaps?). 🤙

Thank you, really was a fun one, managed to get a bit of everything. I can do my best, although I would advise looking at a few other channels/pages that specialise in winter camping, the majority of my kit is used year-round, can cope with most UK conditions, especially as I know how to work it (comes with time). But to instantly say, definitely get a decent pair of gloves, without your hands you lose access to all your gear, no matter what it is. Mine are Rab Storm gloves, I also take a pair of Salomon running gloves and Montane Prism gloves. The latter is more for inside the tent, while the running gloves are good for taking the edge off if it’s not snowing. I also take a set of HotHands just in case I cannot warm up again. A proper thought out and practiced layering system is important as you want to minimise any form of moisture, whether that is sweat/rain or snow. All will make you cold when you stop moving. My orange jacket is mainly just for wearing in the tent, and taking a spare fleece/insulating layer is a good idea, plus a set of thermals for at night. Ski goggles or some form of eye protection is crucial and sunglasses if it’s sunny, the light reflects really well of snow. A buff, warm hat and a spare pair of socks is good no matter the conditions. And to remember if you going to take a water filter, to make sure you don’t let it freeze, put it in your jacket/sleeping bag as the fibres inside will break. Maybe snow pegs as well. And of course, all your usual navigation and exit/plan b procedures. For example, I navigated of the summit only using my compass, as the night before I checked the bearing and knew what it was and could just follow that back in the morning. Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything else. If you want a complete list of the gear I took, I can make that for you, may take a while to remember the names of some items. Rowan.

Awesome camp Rowan. Harsh conditions for sure! What are your thoughts so far on Jannu vs Nallo. I haven’t used my Jannu much since I bought the Nallo earlier this year, but this video has given me the urge to get it out again. Hoping to get out this weekend. Some tasty winds into the 50s forecast so perfect time to dust it off lol👌
@RowanWildCamps
@RowanWildCamps Ай бұрын
Thank you, although I am still jealous of that snowy camp you and Tom had in Ireland where the snow came up and around your tent. I find it hard to compare the 2 as they serve different purposes for me, I feel the Nallo is more versatile and just as strong if both are pitched correctly. Almost personal preference, I like semi-geodesic tents in case of unsure conditions/wind and for potential snow loading. That sounds fun, still haven't had my Jannu out in over 45mph yet, although having seen youself andd Tom use it, you shoul have a nice weekened. Cheers for the comments. Rowan.

@ hey Rowan yeah that was a one off camp. Haven’t seen conditions like those in years. I am so impressed with nallo that I would agree in all but heavy snow loading it is maybe the equal of the Jannu. That’s why I have been using it so much 👍

Excellent video! Nice to watch from the warmth of my lounge! How do you prevent your water and food from freezing in those conditions?
@RowanWildCamps
@RowanWildCamps Ай бұрын
Thank for watching, glad you liked it. Food freezing has never been too much of an issue, as for water I normally boil water for a coffee as soon as I get in the tent, and boil a bit more than needed to add back into the bottle, same when making food/melting snow. Plus when it gets really cold you probably should insulate your bottles in some way, I sometimes put the bottles in my boot, for the water and to stop any potential spin drift gettig in my boots. I know some people heat up some water and put the bottle in the bottom of their sleeping bag, but I wouldn't want to risk it leaking etc. There are some very good channels out there that will be able to help you far better on cold weather caming than me. Rowan.

Thanks for the video. It wasn't easy to film, respect. But why didn't you pitch the tent inside the protective rock wall? Someone built it for a reason some time ago. And about forecasts and calculations. For example, you know that your sleeping bag is designed for temperatures up to -10 degrees Celsius, and suddenly a strong wind picks up that you didn't expect. It might be equivalent to a temperature drop to -25. Risky. Take care of yourself 🙏
