ham radio is sitll ham radio laws have not changed in this area if caught runnign with out a licence except in a real emergency your going to get in alot of trouble.. some laws did change for the better on raidos like thiose used in boats and we dont need a licence for FRS and GMRS or CB Radios in Canada like the USA does but HAM is very. Much still requireing a Licence I Just use mine to listen in on i have better things to do these days so if an emergencey does happen either way iam covered i can use it in an emergency

@@KevinMillard68 yes agreed. In BC we have lots of logging roads, so I monitor the frequencies posted for the logging trucks coming down the mountain with my UV5R. It's a matter of safety. If we had 50 watt GMRS and GMRS repeaters like in the USA a lot of these rural communities wouldn't be using Ham frequencies. Little cel coverage, nowhere to take a HAM course, take a test. What are they gonna do? They will use a ham radio (most likely VHF/UHF)

I always had great interest in GMRS as it exists in the US especially the offroad mobile vehicle units and repeater capabilities. I would love to have one in my car or truck. Weather Industry Canada approves such a system in the future is anybody's guess, but personally I think they should.

All Right understood. 👍 Now there's a topic you just turned around all along without realy answering: IF a baofeng on a GMRS freq. is set to 1 watt, narrow band, vhf, how the hell are they going to know that you're transmitting from a ham in the first place ? Who's going to realy care and police that since it seems legit and nobody has to call a licence name on those channels ? From what I know Industries Canada have a lot on their hands chasing illegal FM stations and unlicenced people transmitting on maritime and private channels... before they come to arrest a paintball team in rural areas.

well here is the deal they can track and do know if your on a ham radio you don't have to call a licence for them to know, perhaps you don't understand the tech that is place on this planet and how it all works , no offence dude but once you dive into this stuff enough you get to understand a lot of stuff you problely really did not want to, there is a saying don't ask a question you don't want to know the answer to .. but in short , I took the ham course and its amazing how these radios work, and its not the regular cops that get into this stuff when illegal radio use happens..

Well figured it out folks, baofeng uv9G water resistant for 30 minures IP rated, GMRS only locked is 1.4 watts on low, has preloaded approved gmrs channels same as a bca 2.0 and $44.99 with cable, still a grey area but NO license needed if you keep the duckie antenna on it and keep it on low power and channels 1-7 and 15-22

There is just simply too much information to provide a full comprehensive list of dos and don’ts in a single comment. Ham radio is a great, inexpensive, and relatively straight-forward hobby to learn and obtain a license for; contact your local amateur radio society for details and course offerings. “In general”, Industry Canada regulates all frequency use within Canada. It is regulated as there are many critical usages (I.e. airlines) where it is unlawful and potentially dangerous to interfere in any way. It is also a revenue stream for Canada as businesses must pay yearly spectrum usage fees. Some specific frequencies, like those used in FRS, GMRS, and CB radio are “open” usage (though be warned that even this has some rules to prevent misuse). For instance, the wattage (power output) of the radio must be quite low, antennas must be fixed and not removable, and the radios must not be user programmable - among other factors. The UV5R meets none of those requirements and is hence very illegal to use in Canada without a proper license. The simple fact is that, like driving a car, knowledge, testing, etc. mean the system works as intended by IC. Amateur radio operators are really, really not the bad guys when educating people not to break the law. Take a course, obtain a license, and enjoy the rewards of properly using very capable equipment to talk to other licensed operators. The OP is correct in that there are sizeable fines which are easily enforced. Not only this - google Safety Code 6 (part of every course). Radio waves can be physically harmful, esp. at higher output - ignorance could lead to cataracts and blindness, cancer, or maybe your grandchild is too close while broadcasting and receives severe RF burns; like a microwave. My point is... until you have the extensive training there are many dangers and challenges not readily apparent to the general public. It’s akin to climbing into a Cessna without pilot training, or a licence. Seems easy enough right? Obtain a license, enjoy the hobby of radio. But, please don’t be ignorant and complain about “the man” lol. De VA6DWF

A little information on this video was wrong. You cannot use a baofeng UV-5R to listen to Land Mobile, GMRS, FRS or marine radios, because they are not type approved. Even scanners must be type approved. This subject has been beaten to death because 4x4'ers and hunters using these radios on RR frequencies

It seems overly restrictive, IMO, that a Canadian is prohibited to use such a radio to transmit on the FRS/GMRS frequencies within the power limits, and using the device as if it were an IC approved device (i.e. built in antenna, not scrambling, not transmitting before listening etc). I understand that most people would use this device in an unlawful manner, however a responsible and law abiding user could use it in the exact same was as the IC approved commercial 2 way radio sets you buy at a big box retailer, and they could never tell the difference OTA.

@@KevinMillard68 sure, but GMRS radios don't require a license and devices such as the UV-5R happen to be able to be compatible technically, it's only for political reasons they are prohibited for such use. I suppose if Baofeng actually implemented features and firmware to restrict the device to IC standards for consumer GMRS they could apply for an IC number and if successful could be sold and used legally as an approved GMRS device but that is not why people buy these. Personally I just want a device that I can legally transmit on GMRS to communicate with my other consumer GMRS radios, but one that can also be programmed to receive across the spectrum and be able to transmit on all possible bands in an emergency. I think the laws for radio users should be loosened up a little bit in Canada. edit: also to be clear the Baofeng UV-5G or UV-5X would be better for my purpose however both still completely unlawful for me to transmit on at all without an Amateur Radio license (which if I had, the UV-5G would still be pointless for me).

I’m thinking about a cheap Chinese radio just to listen for a few months. I want to see how interested I am before I go get my license. I’m an adult and I can stop myself from keying it up. There are also lots of rumors in the US that these radios are illegal. Apparently that isn’t true either. But, it is also illegal to use them for FRS or GMRS in the US. They’re allowed a little more wattage than we are and the BaoFeng still broadcasts at too high of a wattage for use down there. A lot of the Hams hate these radios because they’re very dirty in addition to the illegal bands. I see their point on that one. They can cause interference even if used properly. People do get caught. My ex and his friend were running linears on CBs years ago. (Illegal in Canada). They got a nasty visit from some angry Canadian government types. No fine, but they scared them pretty good and I think that they confiscated the linears if I remember correctly.

Kevys Rc & Music Exactly. Honestly, I’ve never heard of anyone getting caught for the frs/gmrs. They really don’t transmit very far. A group of people trying to stay in touch really doesn’t have a lot to worry about. Someone would have to rat them out to the Ministry and by the time they got there, it would likely be too late. My ex and his friend were using base stations in their apartments. The neighbors complained and the Ministry just triangulated the signals. Duh...both of them knew better.

Why Canada doesn't have any gmrs licencing. I have an electronics communication diploma from 1990 but I'm not sure I want to get a Ham license. It would open up the world of radio to many, including repeaters. I love my cb on SSB but..... is there a Ham guy in charge at industry Canada trying to hold onto some old boys club? Just as others have said, maybe just vote to become American.
