You can just leave dahlias in the ground... - Guessing the reason you dig them up has to do with the fact you sell them? I've never dug mine up except to prevent them from spreading.

It depends on the climate zone and the sort of soil you have. If it's very frosty in winter or very wet, with clay type soil, tuber rot is a real risk. You're lucky to have the conditions to be able to leave them in :)
@RandomPersonOnTheLineАй бұрын
@finflwr interesting, I didn't realize Dahlias had rot issues. I'm mostly on limestone, so I grow a lot of mediterranean stuff like olives, figs and lavender. The only flower bulbs that I have issues with rot are the Ranunculus. Which is fine because all I do with those is just put them in the beds in November and pull them when they start drying out in May. Then, just throw the bulbs in a bucket in the shed until fall. Guess I just figured dahlias were super hardy like bearded iris because they kind of act similar where I am.

@@RandomPersonOnTheLine You're blessed with free draining soil. Yes, Dahlias aren't frost hardy as they originate in lovely hot Mexico! I'm in the UK, so I get the rain as well as some frost. I left all my dahlia tubers in the ground last winter as I was moving house and didn't have the time or storage place to dig them up and overwinter them, on top of that my alottment where I grow them has clay soil. I though I might get away with it and I did put on a bit of extra mulch for protection, but I lost just under half of them. So this year I've dug them up again for overwintering. I love bearded irises too, they're beautiful aren't they :)

Plastic bag does not work for dahlias so don’t it. Spoken from experience. No plastic for storage of dahlia roots. Your flowers are wonderful.
@annbrodzinski57073 ай бұрын
Why doesn't a plastic bag work for you? What do you do that is tried and true? 'Thanks😊
@sunitashastry52703 ай бұрын
@@annbrodzinski5707 your bulbs will get moldy. Without a doubt. I lost a beautiful set of dahlia bulbs because I followed someone else’s advice. It was in a cool place. Etc etc. I don’t recommend anyone does it.
