This is as close to understanding board feet as I've ever gotten - I actually think I might be able to explain it and calculate it now! Thank you David! And thank you even more for being part of #teamtrees...I'm going to go check it out now!
@mattsnyder47544 жыл бұрын
Ethan Carter yeah. The biggest thing is that board feet isn’t the name of a length, it’s a volume.
@jacqdanieles4 жыл бұрын
Anyone know why they divide by 144?
@mattsnyder47544 жыл бұрын
jacq danieles 12 inches in a foot, x2 A board foot is the volume of one square foot of 4/4 wood. 1” thick. 1 square foot. The equation is just scaling that around
@CoolBreeze6404 жыл бұрын
@@jacqdanieles 144 is the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot.
@JoeBcrafts4 жыл бұрын
The thickness should really be at the end of the equation for clarity. As Matt said, the board foot is 1 ft² surface area of 4/4 (1" thick) lumber. So if you use inches for the length x width you have to divide by 144 to convert in² to ft². You can also just multiply the length and width both in ft and then multiply that by the 1, 1.25, 1.5, etc. Example of 8' long 6" wide 5/4 = 8*0.5*1.25 = 5 board feet

I have always shopped a specialty Hardwood Facility whats nice is they have the price per board foot next to each bin and description of if it's 4s or rough etc . On the end of the board is the length on the face on the right side is the width and on the left side is the total board feet of the particular board so it makes it a whole lot easier for those who have trouble figuring it out Great Video should help a lot of those out there who have trouble with this

I like both types of videos. I’m just thinking out loud here, but I’d say these types of easy to digest information videos were about this length (say five to ten minutes), it would justify making the project build videos a little bit longer. - I can really only speak for myself, but 20-25 minutes for a build video is the ideal stretch where it’s long enough to make me sit down and watch, but not too long where my attention wanders.

Hmm...interesting comparing lumber sellers. I wish mine stacked horizontally sometimes like yours does; however, I really like that mine leaves the board really rough sawn (or for most dimensions sold rough, skip, or s3s) and that it typically has boards that are well over 10-12 feet long in most species, which I don't know that yours could accommodate on those shelves or would be easy to sort through for the best board if stacked that way. Mine does also sell cut-offs as long as you leave them decent linear feet of the product to sell later on. I guess it's a coin toss...one method has rough boards in huge lengths stacked vertically for really cheap (even the tropicals and other exotics are all huge, rough, and by the boardfoot). The other alternative means the boards might not have any bow that could develop from being stacked vertically and they are already s4s.
