This game and Teotihuacan kicked off a huge interest in Dice placement games for me. Ive previously enjoyed worker placement as a mechanic but the formula started to grow stale. Throwing dice into the formula suddenly made the individual workers matter because they now have different strengths and adds another layer of strategy into the mix. The fact that it isnt all that difficult to gain camels to change up your die in this game earns it a plus. Though I havent yet played another dice placement game as good as this and Teo, I have found excellent dice-as-resource games such as Troyes (and by extension, Black Angel) and The Magnificent (which took me a while to appreciate because of how abstract the theme is). Anyways, I agree that Marco Polo and its sequel would be great games to check out if youre into dice placement or euros in general.

It's even more amazing how gameplay actually can make or break a game. I don't care if your game is beautiful if gameplay is uninteresting. It's a game, after all 🤷♀️.

These are in those genre of games that looks dry, but when I see how it is played sounds really interesting. I still want to play it before buying it, but definitely interested in it.

How is Marco Polo 1 obsolete. I own both and they have a very different feel. 1 is a lot more tight with money and travel. 2 seems looser in this aspect but still has many difficult and interesting choices. I dont recommend owning both, I might sell one of them, but they cater to different people.
@Medsas4 жыл бұрын
@@Edwinschuur which one will you sell?
@Edwinschuur4 жыл бұрын
In my case 1 because my friends found 1 too tight and rather not play it. I already played 1 a lot and still like it. Personally I like 1 with expansion better. I just wanna say that if you get 1 at this time it is still a great game. 2 is not necessarily better.

I love this game. But I'm also super good at it (with an 80% win rate in 4-player games) so people don't want to play with me anymore. 😅 Also, am I the only one who loves this theme? I've listened to a bunch of podcasts about people like Marco Polo and Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, and they lived amazing lives. It's awesome to relive their journeys in a board game.

I never liked this game. It feels a little unbalanced. The traveling part of the game is way less rewarding than the contracts. If you play in less than 4, just ignore the traveling and keep doing contracts and you win by a landslide.
@mariomartins2614 жыл бұрын
Untrue. Play more games and you'll see. Travelling gives you more options on where to put your dice, not to mention the bonus on the big cities and the turn bonus on small cities (blue ones). Also there's the possibility to get the bonus points from Beijing. The trick is balancing what contracts you do with the travel you want to do. Need camels? Try to get camel contracts. Money? Money contracts. The extra movement contracts are also really good if you use them to land on an extra city and not on an oasis. Not travelling is throwing away ~20 points plus beijing points, plus the extra city bonus and actions. Only works against people that are new to the game or have extremely bad luck on dice (and even then I doubt it). Not to mention 2 characters are made specifically for travelling and there's a bonus 5+10 points on the 8th and 9th outpost (One of those characters can actually lay down 11 outposts for an additional 10 points).
@RaK0 Жыл бұрын
@@mariomartins261I owned this game for many years and while I love the gameplay, me and my group seemed unable to fully "understand" the game. Everyone came to the conclusion that travelling was so expensive, it wasn't worth it in the end. We never managed to get all trading posts on the map while fulfilling the contracts has always been way easier. Since they reward you with a lot of points and the one who fulfilled the most also got additional points at the end the winner after every single game was always the one who fulfilled the most contracts. We never felt that placing trading posts was worth the effort. Since we want to give this game another try after many years of neglect I wonder if we simply didn't understand something about it or if the game really is that unbalanced towards one strategy over the other. Discussions and reviews don't seem to suggest it so the problem must be within our group.
@RaK0 Жыл бұрын
Essentially there was never enough time to nearly get all trading posts on the map. Felt very weird to read that other people do not have this problem. :D
